Department of Mechanical Engineering

Subject: Advanced Measurement Date: 25/06/2015
Notes: Attempt all Questions Time: Three Hours

Q1/
A. How you can measure Air humidity? Explain by experimental procedure and give example about
your suggestions.
B. Describe with the aid of illustrative sketches two types of hot wire.

Q2/ Determine the uncertainty in the polymer concentration of an unknown based on the data below and find
the 95% confidence interval for this measured value.

Polymer Concentration Signal Intensity

(g/ml) (arbitrary unit)
0.0 0.0
0.1 5.8
0.2 12.2
0.4 22.3
0.8 43.3
unknown 15.4

Q3/ The following table represent the output (temperature) of flow inside horizontal pipe; a thermocouple used
for measuring temperature for five length inputs:
Position (m) Temperature (oC)
0.0 25
0.5 30
1.0 32
1.5 35
2 38
2.5 40

Determine the best linear fit to these data, draw the data on a (T, L) plot, and calculate the standard error of
estimate as well as the coefficient of determination.

Q4/ A T-type thermopile is used to measure temperature difference across insulation in the ceiling of a
residence in an energy monitoring program. The temperature difference across the insulation is used to
calculate energy loss through the ceiling from the relationship
Q = k Ac (∆T/L)
where
Ac =ceiling area = 15 m2
k = insulation thermal conductivity =0.4W/moC
L =insulation thickness = 0.25 m
∆T = temperature difference =5oC
Q = heat loss (W)
The value of the temperature difference is expected to be 5oC, and the thermocouple emf is measured with
an uncertainty of ±0.04 mV. Determine the required number of thermopile junctions to yield an
uncertainty in Q of ±5% (95%), assuming the uncertainty in all variables other than ∆T may be neglected.

Q5/ You are employed as a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning engineer. Your task is to decide where in
a residence to place a thermostat and how it is to be mounted on the wall. A thermostat contains a
bimetallic temperature measuring device that serves as the sensor for the control logic of the heating and
air conditioning system for the house. Consider the heating season. When the temperature of the sensor fall
1oC below the set-point temperature of the thermostat? The furnace is activated; when the temperature
raises 1oC above the set point? the furnace is turned off. Discuss where the thermostat should be placed in
the house, what factors could cause the temperature of the sensor in the thermostat to be different from the
air temperature, and possible causes of discomfort for the occupants of the house. How does the thermal
capacitance of the temperature sensor affect the operation of the thermostat? Why thermostats are typically
set 5oC higher in the air conditioning season?
