MISCELLANEOUS METAL PROCESS EQUIPMENT

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION:

A. Provide miscellaneous metal process equipment and appurtenances as indicated and


specified.

I. Relevant Equivalent British/European codes and standards may be used; however, the
equivalency shall be demonstrated and submitted by the Contractor and approved by the
CM/CS.

1.04 SUBMITTALS:

A. Shop Drawings: Submit the following in accordance with Section 01300:

1. Detailed and certified shop and installation drawings, indicating coatings or other
protection against corrosion, and type of metal, alloys and tempers.

2. Mill certificates and signed statements from fabricators certifying alloys from
which work is fabricated with delivery of material and equipment.

3. Manufacturer's specification, catalog data and illustrations.

4. Coating manufacturer's application recommendations and product data, for


Polyamide Epoxy Coating, to CM/CS, 30 days before coating is applied.

5. System Certificates: For each coating system submit to CM/CS invoices of


purchase and notarized statement sworn to be authorized official of organization
that applies coatings, on its letterhead, testifying to following:

a. That immediately before coating, surfaces were blast-cleaned as specified and
were clean, dry, free of dust, rust and mill scale when coated.

b. Names of products used and manufacturer.

c. Shelf-life dates of each container of each product.

d. That surface preparation and coating use, mixing, application, and curing were
done in accordance with current printed recommendations of coating
manufacturer and in accordance with coating requirements in this specification.

e. That copies of coating manufacturer's invoices submitted with this statement


cover sale of products.

1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01610 and as specified.

B. Protect coated ferrous metal during handling, moving, and installation, by provisions
including: padding and blocking and use of canvas or nylon slings.

1.06 JOB CONDITIONS:

A. Do not construct items of dissimilar metals if submerged, splashed, installed in wet


atmospheres or exposed to atmosphere, as to cause electrolysis.

1.07 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

A. Refer to applicable sections of Division 1 with regard to the following:

1. Foundations, Installation, and Grouting

2. Bolts, Anchor Bolts, and Nuts

3. Sleeves and Inserts

4. Protection Against Electrolysis

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS:

A. Steel:

1. Plates and structural steel shapes: ASTM A36; AISC Specifications.

2. Sheet: ASTM A366 or ASTM A569; cold-rolled or hot-rolled carbon sheet steel.

3. Pipe: ASTM A53

B. Stainless Steel: Type 304 or 316 as indicated.

C. Aluminum:

1. Structural rolled or extruded shapes 6061-T6

2. Plates 6061-T6

3. Castings 214

4. Sheets Alclad 3003-H14 and 3003

5. Bolts and nuts 2024-T4

6. Surfaces exposed to atmosphere or corrosive liquid AAC22A41 Finish

2.02 WELDING:

A. AWS; AWS/AA.

2.03 GALVANIZING:

A. Hot dip process; ASTM A123, ASTM A153.

2.04 WEIR AND BAFFLE PLATES:

A. 1/4-in. thick, Type 304 stainless steel weir and baffle plates.

B. Provide angle type stiffeners and supports for baffle plates.

C. Install with Type 316 stainless steel bolts, nuts and washers into 316 stainless steel
concrete anchors inserts.

2.05 BAR RACK AND RAKE:

A. Aluminum bar rack and supporting frame welded construction. Locate spacer bars on
back of rack bars as not to interfere with normal flow of sewage or with raking of rack.
Anchor rack frame to concrete by anchors. Bolt drainage plate to rack bars with Type
316 stainless steel bolts.

B. Rake head and teeth of 1/8 in. (3 mm) thick Type 304 stainless steel plate with aluminum
or wood handle. Rake teeth to mesh with bar spacing of rack with 18-in. (455 mm)
maximum width head. If channel is less than 20-in. (505 mm) wide, provide rake head
width 2-in. (51 mm) less than channel width. Provide handle length equal to inclined
length of rack plus 4-ft., 6-in. (1374 mm).

C. Provide clips for hanging rake on wall.

2.06 STOP GATES AND GUIDE FRAMES:

(NTS: Stop gates are limited to small, manually lifted gates for open channels. Larger
slide gates and hoist operated gates are specified under Section 15103: PREFABRICATED
SLIDE GATES).
A. Manufacturer:

1. Washington Aluminum Company, Baltimore, MD.

2. Whipps Inc., Athol, MA.

3. or acceptable equivalent product.

B. Provisions:

1. Gates from aluminum plate reinforced for hydraulic conditions by aluminum angles
welded to plate so plate will not deflect more than 1/360 of span of gate under head
conditions.

(NTS: Edit following paragraph to the type of lifting devices desired.)


2. Gates with aluminum strap handles or handholes.

3. Grind gate edges smooth.

4. Factory-assemble guide frames from extruded aluminum shapes with welded


mitered corners. Field welding not acceptable.

(NTS: Consider following for large slide gates or where seating forces may be substantial.)
5. Guide frames with high molecular-weight polymer or other suitable bearing bars to
reduce coefficient of friction to value of 0.125 between frame or bar and slide gate.

2.07 STOP PLANK GROOVES:

A. Type A, R-7500 Series made by Neenah Foundry Co., Neenah, WI; an acceptable
equivalent made by Flockhart Foundry Co., Newark, NJ; or Type PG made by McKinley
Iron Works, Fort Worth, TX; or acceptable equivalent product.

2.08 STOP LOG LIFTING HOOKS:

A. Two cast steel hooks above each stop log for lifting wood stop logs. Hooks rated to
handle five times stop log weight.

2.09 STRAINER BASKETS AND APPURTENANCES:

A. Strainer Baskets:

1. Type 304 stainless steel all welded construction with full screens on three sides and
bottom and screen on lower half of front. Top open to influent sewer line.

2. Screen material from expanded stainless steel sheets 5/32 in. (4 mm) thick with 1-
1/2-in. (38 mm) diamond mesh pattern or equivalent woven stainless steel wire
mesh welded to frame.

B. Guide Rails:

1. Schedule 40 galvanized steel pipe and supporting brackets and assemblies.

2. Single continuous lengths of pipes with no joints.

3. Hot-dipped galvanized after assembly and fastened to structure with stainless steel
bolts and galvanized malleable-iron inserts.

C. Guides: Nominal clearance of 1/8 in. (3 mm) to 1/4 in. (6 mm) between basket and rails.

D. Steel Lifting Chain: Fasten heavy galvanized chain [safe working load 500 lb. (227 kg)]
to bail of basket with coupling link. Extend chain from basket to hook just below access
hatch. Furnished with pear-shaped link at top for lifting.

E. Access Hatch Doors: 1/4-in. (6 mm) thick steel floor plate with nonskid diamond pattern
tread surface. Each door with hinges locking hasp for padlock and lifting handle.
Frames constructed of structural steel angles with integral concrete anchors.

F. Portable Tripod: Hand-operated wire rope winch having sufficient lift for load hook to
reach bottom of manhole. Fit with hand brake and ratchet and pawl for safe load
suspension. Capacity of unit not less than 500 lb. (227 kg).

2.10 STEADY BEARING SUPPORTS:

A. Structural Steel

B. Spans as short as possible. Rigid end connections and beams.

C. Ensure that principal section of modulus opposes horizontal forces.

2.11 MISCELLANEOUS PIPE SUPPORTS:

A. All-welded construction and made of aluminum shapes of acceptable alloy and temper.

1. Foam spray header supports.

2. Aeration piping supports above liquid surface.

(NTS: Use following paragraph, if applicable.)


B. Supports for air diffuser headers in bottom of tanks or channels fabricated of Type 304L
stainless steel.

2.12 SAMPLE SINKS:

A. Sinks fabricated of Type 304 stainless steel. Identifying signs provided under Section
10999.

2.13 MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS:

A. Provide items not specified herein of the size, shape, materials and details as indicated on
the drawings, and suitable for the purpose intended.

2.14 COATING:

A. Give aluminum in contact with concrete, a protective coating of Bitumastic Super Service
black made by Koppers Co., Inc., Pittsburgh, PA; Tarmastic 100 made by Porter
Coatings, Louisville, KY; 450 Heavy Tnemecol made by Tnemec Co., North Kansas
City, MO; or acceptable equivalent product.

2.15 SHOP PAINTING:

A. Specified in Section 09940.

2.16 FIELD PAINTING:

A. Specified in Section 09941.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 PREPARATION:

A. Properly locate and build in with connecting work all frames, anchors and anchor bolts.
Where expansion bolts are required or permitted, provide pre-drilled holes.

3.02 ERECTION:

A. Set items accurately, and secure properly in place. Draw bolted parts closely together
with nuts drawn up tightly.

B. Install weir plates with neoprene gasket as indicated.

C. Set weir crests level to elevations indicated, or directed. Fill each tank with plant
influent, and adjust plates for equal overflow levels.

D. Erect all equipment in conformity with accepted high quality standards, using skilled
workmen of the appropriate trades.

E. Install suitable hangers on wall, where directed, for supporting bar rack rake.

3.03 CONTRACT CLOSEOUT:

A. Provide in accordance with Section 01700.
