EDUC 560: FIELD EXPERIENCE IV
FIELD EXPERIENCE INSTRUCTOR NARRATIVE ASSESSMENT
EXTENDING TEACHING AND CURRICULUM EXPERTISE

Student Teacher: Novak, Amy ID#: 10056055 School: Bow Valley High

Partner Teacher: Jarret Hooper Field Instructor: Dr. Sandra Duggleby

NOTE: This is not a letter of reference and will not be distributed by the WERKLUND SCHOOL OF EDUCATION to potential employers,
however potential employers may ask for this assessment from the student directly.
The purpose of this eight-week field experience is to focus on their ability to extend and deepen their understanding classroom learning as they
move towards meeting the requirements of interim certification. Upon successful completion of this Field Experience, Student Teachers are
prepared to assume the full pedagogical and professional responsibilities of a practicing teacher. Under the guidance of a Partner Teacher, the
Student Teacher has planned and assumed responsibility for 80%-100% of classroom teaching responsibilities in his/her placement classroom.
The following Narrative Assessment should address the Student Teacher’s participation in the course as a whole as well as their growth and
readiness in relation to the KSAs for Interim Certification outlined by Alberta Education. Finally, an assessment of the Student Teacher’s
readiness to take on the role of teacher, including evidence of professionalism and collegiality, should be described.

Amy  Novak  has  spent  eight  weeks  as  a  Field  Experience  IV  student  teacher  in  Mathematics  at  Bow  Valley
High  School  in  Cochrane,  Alberta.    Amy  has  assumed  the  full  responsibilities  of  a  classroom  teacher  by
planning,  implementing,  and  assessing  curricular  learning  experiences  for  80%  to  100%  of  the  day.    Amy
was  accountable  and  responsible  for  developing  a  strong  understanding  of  the  knowledge,  concepts,
methodologies,  and  assumptions  of  Mathematics  taught  during  Field  Experience  IV.  Amy  demonstrates  a
strong  yet  caring  and  respectful  command  of  the  classroom  through  voice  and  interaction  with  students.
She  connects  with  all  students  in  a  professional  and  respectful  way.    The  strong  professional  relationship
with  her  partner  teacher  makes  this  classroom  a  perfect  place  to  take  risks  in  teaching.    Amy’s  reflections
on  her  lesson  with  the  guidance  and  feedback  from  her  partner  teacher  make  this  practicum  an
outstanding  place  to  learn  and  grow.

Amy  consistently  meets  the  teacher  quality  standards  that  are  expected  of  teachers  in  Alberta.    She  fosters
effective  relationships  by  showing  respect  to  parents  and  students.    She  also  ensures  that  the  learning  of
the  students  is  visible  to  the  parents.    She  has  strong  positive  relationships  with  everyone  due  to  her
outstanding  personal  skills  that  are  continuously  modeled  on  a  daily  basis.    The  sense  of  humour  between
Amy  and  her  partner  teacher  is  very  refreshing  because  not  only  are  they  both  extremely  knowledgeable
about  the  content,  but  the  respect  is  very  evident  between  teachers,  students,  parents,  and  other  staff
members.

Amy  understands  that  all  students  can  learn.    She  consistently  identifies  students’  different  learning  styles  and  the
way  they  learn  by  engaging  students  in  multiple  paths  to  achieve  their  learning  goals.  In  her  lesson  plans,  Amy  uses

excellent  researched  strategies  that  are  known  to  help  all  students  achieve  their  learning  goals  related  to  the
curriculum.  She  ensured  that  all  students  contribute  to  the  discussions.  With the Socrative app, Amy easily applies
formative assessments in class.

Amy’s  clear  instructions  and  specific  details  of  the  expectations  make  learning  easy.    Students  know  exactly
what  is  is  expected.    All  of  the  instructions  are  visible  at  the  front  of  the  classroom  on  the  white  board.
Amy  explains  how  to  correct  each  of  the  questions  accurately  using  the  smart  board.    Every  question  can
clearly  be  seen  by  all  of  the  students.

In  her  specialization  of  Mathematics,  she  provided  extra  Math  help  for  students  before  school,  after  school,
and  during  lunch.    Amy  contributed  to  the  design  of  a  new  Math  9-‐3  course  intended  to  prepare  struggling
students  to  write  the  Grade  9  Math  Provincial  Achievement  Test.    She  planned  out  the  Math  10-‐3  course
for  the  entire  semester  to  support  the  teacher  in  Term  4.    This  included  building  a  Moodle  shell  that
contained  outlines,  reviews,  online  exams,  and  PDF  notes  as  a  teacher  resource.

Amy  assesses  learning  by  analyzing  the  results  of  classroom  assessments  and  uses  the  results  for
determining  the  next  steps  in  learning.    Amy  challenges  each  student  by  asking  higher  order  thinking
questions  to  inspire  critical  thinking  in  class.    When  the  students  discuss  these  challenges  in  groups,  it
inspires  them  to  reach  a  higher  level  of  learning.  Amy  continuously  coaches  students  at  lunch,  after  school,
and  before  school.    Amy  also  uses  cooperative  learning  strategies,  which  engaged  the  students  in  their
learning.    Each  of  the  students  coached  each  other  to  solve  the  problems  with  ease.

Amy  teaches  so  that  students  can  use  technologies  as  tools  to  learn  independently  or  to  share  with  others.
By  teaching  proper  use  of  the  various  technologies,  Amy  encourages  students  to  choose  the  right
technology  to  find  information,  communicate  with  others,  problem  solve,  and  make  decisions.    EXCELLENT!

Amy  understands  the  importance  of  contributing,  independently  and  collegially,  to  the  quality  of  her
school.    She  enhances  and  maintains  the  quality  of  her  school  that  benefits  the  students,  parents,
community  and  colleagues.    For  example,  Amy  has  helped  out  in  the  school  by  volunteering  as  a  coach  for
badminton.  Amy  also  communicates  with  the  parents  in  a  positive  way.    By  listening  to  the  discussions
during  the  interview,  she  learned  about  each  of  the  students’  strengths  and  weaknesses.  Amy  also
volunteered  to  help  out  with  the  grade  9  open  house  where  she  interacted  with  prospective  students  and
parents  and  answered  their  questions  about  Bow  Valley  High  School.  In  the  Arts  Community,  Amy
supported  her  student  in  the  drama  performance  of  Grease  by  attending  the  production  and
acknowledging  the  students  for  their  leading  roles.    It  is  her  strong  commitment  to  her  students,  the  staff,
and  the  entire  community  that  makes  Amy  stand  out  as  a  highly  qualified  teacher.    I  highly  recommend
Amy  as  a  competent  teacher  that  will  be  a  welcome  addition  to  any  staff  lucky  enough  to  have  her  on  their
team.

Amy  has  met  the  knowledge,  skills,  and  attributes  associated  with  EDUC  560.
