Gender – Male

Industry – Sales & Marketing (FMCG)

Where have you been born and raised?

I was born and raised in Agra. I belong to a family of farmers and was brought
up in a joint family.

My cousin has always been a great influence and inspiration for me. He is an
IASofficer and I want to be as successful as him.

Please give a summary of your career.

I first worked in JP Palace, Agra as a team associate in the Food and
Beverage department for around 19 months.

Then, I worked as a supervisor at Courtyard Marriott for 18 months.

Later, I became a sales executive in Oyo rooms and worked there for 2 years.

Currently, I’m working as an Area Sales Officer in Emami from the last 1
month.

Which institutes are best for MBA?

According to me, Sri Ram College of Commerce, FMS, Christ College in

Bangaloreand LSR College for women are the best commerce colleges in
India. IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, however, come first for
MBA.

What are the costs associated with the MBA?

IIMs & Top MBA Colleges increase fee every year. IIM Ahmedabad has
increased its fee from INR Rs.16 lakhs to Rs.22 lakhs in 4 years.

Good MBA colleges with a low fee are few. These are the Government
University’s MBA departments or affiliated colleges where the entire MBA
course is offered at a nominal fee of INR Rs. 22,000 per annum.

What are the typical entry-level jobs in this profession?

Students from the commerce stream are more welcome. One can pursue a
B.Comcourse and then go for MBA in Sales and Marketing.

You need to give entrance exams like CAT, MAT, XAT, NMAT, SNAP, CET,
etc. Clearing these will get you admission to your preferred MBA institute.

After the 4 years course, you will get placement in companies on the basis of
your eligibility and the interviews.

What is the range of remuneration one can expect in your line

of career & industry?

It depends on the place and position you’ve got employed in. Salary increases
with experience.

Starting out — 2,00,000 INR per annum

5 years of experience — 5,00,000 INR per annum

10 years of experience — 14,00,000 INR per annum

15 years of experience — 24,00,000 INR per annum

20+ years of experience — 60,00,000 INR per annum

Please describe your work.

My work was different for each job.

In JP Palace, I took care of restaurant, handling guests, hosting parties etc. In

Courtyard Marriot, the work was nearly the same but included finance
reporting of total sales. For Oyo rooms, I handled clients who booked rooms.
In Emami, my work is to increase sales of my company products in the area
assigned to me.

I work 8 hours a day and Sunday is off.

What are some of the positives which would encourage

someone to consider this career/job?

1. The foremost benefit is that your promotion and salary is completely

dependent on your effort. The harder you work, the more you earn.
There are no limits to the amount of money you can earn and the
success you can achieve. It all depends upon your own skills and
dedication.
2. The company gives you numerous chances to earn extra
commission/incentives. The fixed/basic salary is lucrative too.
3. There is high scope for this field in our country, which allows one to
grow.
4. Even if you work in private organization, there is great job security.
5. You’re solely in charge in this job. You will do well if you keep yourself
motivated throughout your work.

What are some of the challenges that you would want someone
to be aware of when considering this career/job?

Challenges also vary according to the designation and the field of working.

1. The challenge while working in hotels is satisfying the specific needs of

customers and making them happy. It’s sometimes hard.
2. The challenge as an Area Sales Officer is selling of products from
door-to-door. You should be prepared for rejection. In the end, it is only
you, who has to successfully market your product.
3. The work-life balance is average, as sometimes there is a lot of travel,
hard-work and sometimes it is far less.
4. The work is hectic and stressful. Without good skills, you will find it hard
to make ends meet.

What are the relevant skills/technologies/trends that are

commanding a premium in your job profile?

One must have good computer skills, communication skills, presentation skills
and finally a good grasp of accounting and commerce.
What kind of a person would be happy in your career?

Someone who enjoys working hard is optimistic even when s/he fails at
certain tasks as things won’t go your way always, would be happy in the
career.

Given another choice, what would you do differently as far as

your professional selections are concerned?

Not at all. I’m completely satisfied.

What would be your advice to students or professionals who

are just starting their journey on a path like yours?

My advice is only that if you’re entering the profession, rely on your own skills.
The degree and college education would only make you an eligible employee
but for doing the work, your own skills and hard work are required in the field
work.
