COURSE  DESCRIPTION                          
Principles  of  two-­‐dimensional  design  for  an  understanding  of  its  nature  and  expressive  possibilities,  with  the  
opportunity  to  develop  a  creative  approach  in  working  with  its  elements.  
 
This  is  a  foundation  course  for  art  majors  and  an  entry  point  to  visual  literacy  and  art-­‐making  for  all  students.    This  
course  will  introduce  you  to  a  working  knowledge  of  the  elements  and  principles  of  art,  as  well  as  to  a  variety  of  
mediums  and  processes.

COURSE  AIMS  &  OUTCOMES                        
You  will  be  able  to:  
  •    Understand  and  use  appropriate  terms  to  describe  the  elements  and  principles  of  design  
  •    Use  selected  tools  and  materials  with  sensitivity  to  their  inherent  material  properties  and  the          
                      effects  they  produce  
  •    Synthesize  the  elements  and  principles  in  your  own  artistic  practice  as  you  creatively  solve  visual    
    problems  despite  various  material  or  conceptual  limitations  
  •    Collaborate  with  peers  in  analyzing  and  solving  design  problems    
  •    Critique  your  own  work  and  your  peers’  both  verbally  and  in  written  formats  
  •    Move  forward  into  upper  level  art  courses  with  confidence

COURSE  POLICIES                        
   
Attendance     It  matters  that  you  are  here.    Creative  classes  thrive  on  the  culture  we  create  in  the  studio.  
Policy   Being  consistently  late  or  missing  classes  can  halt  creative  development….  and  as  it  turns  out,  
the  “muse”  only  attends  when  you  do!    You  are  allowed  1  “free”  absence.    After  that  your  
grade  will  be  affected.    More  than  6  absences  will  result  in  failing  the  course.  
 
Art  Events  
In  addition  to  course  attendance,  Art  Majors  are  required  to  attend  departmental  events.    
Failure  to  attend  at  least  four  events  this  semester  will  result  in  a  15%  final  reduction  of  your  
Final  Grade  in  any  art  class  you  are  a  part  of.    Non-­‐majors  are  required  to  attend  three  events.  
 
   
Late  work   Work  turned  in  1  week  past  the  due  date  will  be  penalized  one  full  letter  grade.    Work  more  
  than  two  weeks  late  will  not  be  accepted  for  evaluation.
