5 Cringe worthy moments from the Ramzan transmissions

It is an unfortunate fact that, for the past couple of years, Ramzan transmissions have become a
mainstay in the month of Ramzan. Every year popular Television channels compete against one another
for the ratings by luring the masses into competing and engaging in ludicrous acts for a bunch of prizes
which range from mobile phones to airplanes! The shows specifically cater to the lowest common
denominator with the audiences, as well as the hosts, acting in an incredibly juvenile behavior and in the
process completely undermining the sanctity and actual purpose of the Holy month. It is quite obvious
that these transmissions have also resulted in some of the most cringe-worthy moments in the history
of television. Here is a look at the five most cringe-worthy moments from Ramzan transmissions;

1. Astaghfar with Veena Malik:

Veena Malik is no stranger to controversy. The B-grade actress has always managed to stay in the
limelight with her ‘bold’ photoshoots and attention seeking antics. Therefore it was quite a surprise to
the audiences when it was announced that Veena Malik will be hosting the Ramzan transmission on a
channel known as ATV. The announcement of the transmission was made with a promo featuring Malik
in all of her over the top melodramatic glory complete with the fake tears. Needless to say, people were
surprised and shocked. For the cynics, it was just another example of the shallowness of the Pakistani
celebrities who would succumb to astounding lows in order to stay relevant.

2. Hamza Ali Abbasi gets banned for raising a voice for the Ahmediya community:

Kudos to Hamza Ali Abbasi for trying to do a show which at least tried to do something different during
the month of Ramzan. While the show did not completely get rid of the game show/prize giving formula,
it did try to engage the audiences by encouraging discussions with the scholars from different Islamic
sects on important topics. One of the topics was the Ahmediya community with Hamza Ali Abbasi
questioning the scholars on the reasons why the community had been ostracized from the society,
which had labeled them as heretics. Needless to say, this topic landed Hamza in a world of trouble with
Perma banning the show. Mullahs accused Abbasi of blasphemy and issued death threats. The show
returned on air after a couple of days but Hamza Ali Abbasi was banned from appearing in the
transmission.

3. A participant in the show does not recognize the president:

If there is one thing that the Ramzan transmissions have proven then it is the fact that common
Pakistanis lack basic general knowledge regarding their own country? Case in point; during the ARY
Ramzan transmission, hosted by Waseem Badami and the late Junaid Jamshed, a participant was shown
the picture of the president of Pakistan (Mamnoon Hussain) and was asked who the person was. The
lady, who was keen on winning the prize, blurted out that this was the army chief of Pakistan (Raheel
Sharif)! Needless to say, her answer left the audiences at home, and the hosts, in splits. A similar
incident happened at another Ramzan transmission where a woman was asked the profession of M.A
Jinnah. The answer. A cable operator!
4. Maya Khan hosted Ramzan transmission shows on air conversions:

It is a well-known fact that Pakistan, while being an Islamic country, is also home to people from
different religions and it is the responsibility of television channels to ensure that they continue to
respect the sentiments of all the individuals who live in the society. Therefore it was quite surprising
when, in order to ape other channel’s transmission, Maya Khan’s transmission started broadcasting
conversions of Hindus to Islam on air. The conversion of the people, most of whom came from
impoverished backgrounds, was treated as a fodder for ratings and left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.

5. Amir Liaquat:

Ah, the good doctor is the pioneer when it comes to Ramzan transmissions. It was Amir Liaquat who
started this trend and while many people have jumped the bandwagon, Liaquat still remains the most
popular Ramzan transmission host in Pakistan. It is, therefore, a given fact that he has also been the
most controversial figure when it comes to these transmissions. Who can forget the infamous “Aam
Khayega” controversy where Amir Liaquat let loose and completely transformed into the psychopath
that he really is and shoved mangoes down people throats, who were willing participants because of
free prizes! Liaquat’s rationale behind this? Just fun. Who can forget the one time where he gave away
infant babies to couples on live television or the incident last year where he blatantly mocked the
suicide of a woman? The man does everything he can to insult his audiences from tearing up their
clothes to openly mocking them in front of other. Yet people continue to flock to his shows. Now he has
joined Bol TV and has promised to give away airplanes as prizes on his game show. Doesn’t matter that
flying an airplane is very different from driving a car or riding a motorcycle. It’s what the Bolwalas and
axactians do and if they have it their way then “Aisa hi chalay ga”
