That ’40 days’ has a very Biblical ring to it. In Noah’s day it rained for 40
days; Elijah spent 40 days and 40 nights escaping to Horeb from the
murderous designs of Jezebel; and Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness
following his baptism. Whether these really were periods of 40 days we
shall never know, but that ’40 days’ has come to symbolise a period which
is a time of testing or of tribulation or hardship of one form or another. It
seems to indicate an optimal time which tests the limits of human
endurance.
It can also be a time of dislocation from normal everyday life, when time
itself seem to slow right down and our perceptions or sensitivities become
heightened and we see things in a different perspective.
David Runcorn, in his book, ‘Space for God’, talks about God being a God
who walks with his people – he is a ‘3 miles an hour’ God.
Perhaps if it does rain a lot this summer it will give us a chance to slow
down, take a different perspective on life, time to re-connect with God, to
give him our attention and walk at 3 miles an hour with him.

A CELEBRATION OF BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY LIFE
St. Mary’s Church, Masham Sunday 8th July 10.45 a.m.
Businesses mark an enormous and vital contribution to both our national
and local community life. This contribution however is often not properly
acknowledged – as are the difficulties and uncertainties inherent in
commercial life. All members of our local community – and particularly
those involved in business of any kind – are invited to a special
‘Celebration of Business’ on Sunday 8 th July, at 10.45 a.m. in Masham
Church. We will give thanks for their contribution, pray for them and
consider such issues as the challenge of fusing Christian values with
business life. All are welcome – business owners and staff - regular
churchgoer or not.

Hope Community Garden are looking for more volunteers to join the
regular work party on the first Saturday of every month, maintaining and
developing the garden. If you enjoy gardening, this could be right up your
street. Not only is it an enjoyable – we’re a friendly bunch – but it is a
really worthwhile thing to do, keeping this excellent community facility up
to scratch. There are some small plots available at present, so if you are
interested, now is the time to book one. They are a gentle way of keeping
your hand in if you are no longer able to manage a full size allotment, or if
you don’t have much of a garden at home and would like to grow a few
veg, or if you would like to try and involve your children in something really
productive. If you have poor mobility or are a wheelchair user, we also
have a raised bed which you could either take on completely, or just help
with its maintenance. There is a parking space available, and wheelchair
or scooter access from the path. If you want to know more, Jim Hunter is
the man to talk to – he can be contacted at the number below.
The HOPE Community Garden is joint enterprise of Masham Allotment
Association and HOPE Community Support. If you would like to be part of
this exciting project, or want any other information about HOPE, please
contact Joy Rayden on (01765) 689310 or Jim Hunter on (01765) 689828
Our latest project is a Carers Group, which will be meeting on the third
Wednesday of each month from 2 – 3.00pm in the entrance porch to the
Methodist Church. See separate article for more details.
We are open to everyone, but offer additional information and support for
people living with dementia through our contacts with Dementia Support,
Carers Resource, Red Cross and others. Do feel free to pop in and find
out what we get up to. You can join us for soup & rolls, and tea & cake
from 12.30am onwards, and come and sample some of our activities.
If you would like more information about the centre, or would like to
volunteer, please contact Joy Rayden on (01765) 689310.

NEW CARERS GROUP
Do you care for someone who needs day-to-day support with their
physical or emotional needs? Maybe your wife or husband? Maybe a
sibling or friend? Or maybe a child with extra support needs? Whatever
your particular situation, being the main carer for someone who is highly
dependant can be lonely and exhausting, and it is often difficult to know
where to turn for help with your own emotional and practical support needs
In June we started a new Carers Group, within the Wednesday Welcome
Centre at the Methodist Church, but run by Carers Resource. It will be
meeting every third Wednesday of the month, from 2.00-3.00pm, at the
front of the church.
Carers Resource long ago recognised the essential work done by carers,
and all the implications regarding their own needs. They are able to offer
emotional support, information about resources available, and, where
necessary, put you in touch with other agencies who may be able to offer
more specialised support. One of the most valuable aspects of the group
is meeting up with others carers, sharing experiences, and perhaps finding
an understanding which is difficult to find elsewhere.
If you would like to know more, please phone Isobel Holmes, who
will be leading the group, at Carers Resource on 01423 500555, or
call in at the Wednesday Welcome Centre and ask for Joy.

Masham Liftshare: We all readily offer lifts and share car journeys with
our friends and family, but many of us travel with an empty passenger seat
simply because we don’t know of anyone who needs a lift, while others
struggle to make appointments because they’ve got no wheels. Around
Masham, there is now a way the passenger-less and the lift-less can
meet! Save money by sharing travel costs; cut congestion, pollution and
help look after our environment; reduce the stress of driving by sharing
your journey with great people. You can choose to car share as little or as
often as you like, it doesn’t have to be on a regular basis. All you have to
do is register your journey as either a driver or a passenger
on www.masham.liftshare.com and then activate your account. Joining the
scheme is simple and completely free and your email address is kept
hidden. If you have any questions and want to find out more about this
exciting community transport initiative or need help accessing the website,
please pop into Mashamshire Community Office, call 01765 680200 or

God’s plan, is to bring all creation together; everything in heaven and
earth, with Christ himself as head.
This service aims to express the view that cruelty of any kind is
incompatible with Christ’s teachings of love, that love is indivisible, and
that cruelty towards any sentient creature is a breach of love. Each of the
pets brought to the service will also represent the many animals who are
not loved and cared for by humans. We will be remembering in prayer
those animals suffering commercial and social exploitation. Also
remembered will be those animals who help humankind in many ways: as
companions, guide dogs, hearing dogs, animals for disabled people and in
the detection of crime.
The service will be followed by a picnic lunch – please bring your own
picnic and something to sit on. In the event of bad weather the service will
be held in St. Paul’s Church, Healey.
Help Wanted
We have been the owners of Bramblewick Cottage in Fearby for several
years. Although living in Newcastle, we love the Dales and visit whenever
we can. The cottage is operated as a popular holiday let, and our previous
cleaner was a keen gardener. Owing to family commitments she no
longer works for us, and we are looking for a person to tend the small front
and back gardens. It might appeal to someone in the village, or possibly
from slightly further afield. We will pay an hourly rate (to be discussed with
applicants) in addition to reimbursement for the purchase of any plants
and materials. We have a lawnmower and a selection of hand tools, which
are kept at the property. Please contact Alison or David by email on
bramblewickcottage@gmail.com or by phone on 0191 2713 1549 or
07940 590027.

Owl Watch
Are you interested in wildlife? Owl Watch, a major campaign appealing to
the public to detect and help safeguard owls in the Nidderdale Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty was launched earlier in the year. Since the
campaign launched earlier in the year 243 records have been sent in. The
AONB would love to hear from you if you spot an owl in the AONB. If you’d
like to get involved look out for postcards, which have been distributed to
GP surgeries, shops and in school book bags across Nidderdale AONB,
and return them to tell us where you see or hear an owl. The cards feature
a guide to identify owls. You can also email info@thewildwatch.org.uk or
Tweet sightings to #tweettwho. We look forward to hearing from you!
