Description of the match:

This match was the first leg of Champions league quarter finals. It was played in front of a full
house in Allianz Arena, in Munich. The Bayern fans created a good atmosphere and it was fun to
watch the game. The referee contributed good football by allowing the flow of the game and not
tolerating unsporting behavior. Both teams were there to play and no one wanted to hurt each
other. It was good sportsmanship and football presented by both teams. The match ended 2-0 for
with Bayern Munich winning the match.

Referee
I. Knowledge, Application and Interpretation of the Laws of the Game, Disciplinary Control
and Technical Management of the game with special reference to the situations and the
minutes when they occurred.
(Crucial decisions, if available, have to be explicitly mentioned in the grid and highlighted).
Comments:
It was obvious that the referee had a clear line for what a foul was and what wasn’t today. He
interpreted challenges all at the same way and let the game flow as much as possible. His fouls
selection and disciplinary control were mostly appropriate for the level of the game and players
accepted his decisions without further dissent.

Minute Description of the situation

31st Good no call on Ribery. He went down too easy.
A yellow card for Mandzukic. It was probably persistent infringement but the reason
44th
wasn’t clear to me.
A yellow card for Chiellini for an elbow in the face while challenging the ball for a
54th
header from behind. Correct.
Same foul by Chiellini. Referee called the advantage but should have talked to
59th
Chiellini about the incident.
67th Yellow card for Vidal. Correct card for persistent infringement.
A yellow card for a dive (as the referee thinks) for Lichsteiner. In my opinion it was
76th
neither a dive nor a penalty. Should have been a no call.
Another yellow for diving, this time for Gustavo, Bayern Mucnih. It shows the
82nd referee’s consistency however this is similar to the first position and I don’t think it
should have been a yellow either.
This was probably the only important foul that the referee missed. While Vidal
was playing with the ball, Ribery came from behind and stepped on his calf
83rd with his studs, with no chance to play the ball. It was a clear foul and to me it
is a big borderline call. It is at least a yellow card and red card would also be
understandable. But no call is not acceptable.

II. Tactical approach and its Degree of Consistency, Personality, Match Control and
Management of the Teams and Players with special reference to the situations and the
minutes when they occurred.
Comments:
The referee had a good control of the game with his style. His communication with the players was
very good and he didn’t have any major problems controlling the situations. He chose to talk to
them instead of using his cards and mostly it worked for him. All the players accepted his calls and
there was always a smile on the referee’s face while he was talking to them. That also helped him
to calm the situations down.

Tactical approach, totally consistent and harmonious throughout

Positive Points 1.
the entire match.
Game-feeling, common sense, harmoniously combined with the
2.
Laws of the Game.
3. Relationship with players, of whom he was fully respected.
Great personality, which was his medium to manage the match
4.
and not the mere usage of cards and whistles.

Identify the players whom he is carding and let the people

Points to improve 1.
understand why he is carding them.
Being able to see the whole picture between players while
2.
looking for a foul. (Missed Ribery – Vidal foul,)

III. Physical Shape, Stamina, Positioning, Movement as well as Mental Awareness, if needed,
with reference to the minutes when they occurred, always in case of a “-“.
Physical Condition (very good, good, average, poor): Good. The referee wasn’t challenged
physically in this game.

Further Aspects:
+ Expected -
Always close to play, follows play at all times with a flexible
X
diagonal system and impedes interference with play

X ready to take a (crucial) decision (specially in the box; be able
to enter the box in some cases when it is necessary)
X Shows awareness and is able to anticipate the action

Minute Description of the situation

IV. Teamwork (co-operation with (A)ARs and fourth official with reference, if needed, to
special situations and the minutes when they occurred)
Comments:
The team work was good in this match since there were no conflicts.

V. If needed: General comments or advices for improvement; explanation of the chosen

Comments:
The Second Bayern Munich goal at the 63rd minute looked like offside. But I will side with the
assistant referee in this position and give him the benefit of the doubt since he was not sure(from
his side stepping one can understand he was debating whether or not to call it).
