The Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist

Like everyone else, I was horrified earlier this week to hear the details of the treatment of small immigrant
children at the Mexican border. It was further distressing to learn of the exorbitant fees that the contractors
are receiving to “house” these children who are separated from their parents. Whatever merit there is in
enforcing existing laws and holding adults accountable, in terms of Catholic Social Teaching, common
sense, and common decency, small children should not be bearing the heaviest weight of the penalties.
This is a profound moral issue of our time and all of us, as part of our duty as responsible Catholics, need
to regularly and routinely object to this kind of treatment of small children. From the Gospel according to
St. Matthew, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers
and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
