Below you u can see the final image. We’re going tto use severaal different teextures, fonts and photos tto 
recreate tthis piece. 

Step 1 

Open up tthe Photosho op and create a new docum ment with dim mensions set to 1680px byy 1050px. You

use other settings if yo
ou’d like to create larger or smaller verssion of your d
drawings.

Step 2 

You’ll nee
ed some textuures and phottos before you start. You m may look for tthem on stocck websites, frree 
stock webbsites or you may pick som me from your collection of  textures. I ussed textures ffrom 
cgtextures.com. I found them in Paper caterogryy and Manmaade category. I can’t make them availab ble 
for downlload here duee to their licen
nce restrictio
ons but you mmay download d them free of charge from m 
cgtextures’ website. Yoou don’t have e to choose exxactly these ttextures I pickked but if youu choose them m it’ll 
be easier to follow my tutorial. I’m leaving the chhoice up to yoou. Below yo ou’ll find five ttextures that I 
used (a paaper texture aand four macchines).

Step 3 

Paste the paper texturre into the Photoshop and scale it downn by hitting Cttrl/CMD + T tto fit the canvvas.

Step 4 

Open anyy of the machiine photos. U Use Pen Tool ((P) to draw a  path along its outline. Once you have iit 

right‐clickk on the canvaas and select Make Selectiion… Then deelete everythiing but the m machine (remoove 
its backgrround).

Step 5 

Paste the machine to tthe main docu ument (if you
u haven’t bee n editing it in
n the main do
ocument). Scaale it 
down (Ctrrl/CMD + T) a bit to fit one
e page of the book like on tthe image beelow.

Step 6 

Go to Filte
er > Blur > Surface Blur… aand use it. Use e 5 pixels for  radius and 15 pixels for thhreshold. Thiss way 
you’ll get rid of some rredundant de etails. Go to Fiilter > Stylize  > Find Edgess. After that desaturate thiis 
layer by h
hitting Shift + Ctrl/CMD + UU. Use surface e blur severall more times but beware o of loss of som
me key 
elements. If they are sttarting to disaappear simply stop blurrinng it or isolatee the area wh hich should sttay 
untouched. 

Step 7 

Change its blending mo ode to Multip ply. Go to Imaage > Adjustm

ments > Hue/SSaturation… SSelect Colorizze. 
You have to change the color of you ur first sketch
h to some shaade of brown (lighter or daarker – as you
u 
wish). To do it drag thee last slider to
o something like +30 and ffirst two slideers somewherre to the 
beginningg of their barss.

Step 8 

Hold Ctrl//CMD and clicck on a thumb
bnail of the laayer you’ve juust been mod difying. Make sure it’s selected. 
Create a nnew layer (Ctrl/CMD + Shifft + N). Fill it w
with any coloor. Go to this llayer’s style aand apply it th

Step 9 

Go to Imaage > Adjustm ments > Auto C Contrast. Dessaturate it (Cttrl/CMD + Shiift + U). Your image should

become visible and grey. G Go to Image > > Adjustmentts > Brightnesss/Contrast… and drag the first 
slider a bit to the left aand the secon
nd to the rightt side. 

Step 10 

Go to Filte
er > Blur > Mo otion Blur and use 44 pixe els for distancce and 0 degreees for an angle. Duplicatee this 
layer. Move the originaal layer a bit tto the right. TThen move thhe duplicated layer to the left. Both layeers 
should bee moved only a few pixels ((no more than ten to fifteeen pixels). Maake a selectio on of the origginal 
layer again (see the be eginning of the eighth step p for the instr uctions). Click on two layeers from this sstep 
and applyy a mask for b both of them. Just hold Alt//Option key aand click on aa mask icon att the bottom of 
the layerss palette. Finaally change th
heir blending modes to Co lor Burn and lower their o opacity if 
necessaryy. You should get somethin ng like that:

Step 11 

Once you enable the o outline it shou
uld look like aa sketch with  light horizonttal lines at the edges. Follo
ow 
steps 4‐100 to create otther drawingss and place th hem on both  pages of the book. Their p placement is uup to 
you. I found some insp piration by loo
oking at Leonardo Da Vincci’s drawings aand just placeed my ones 
haphazard dly like he did

Finally you can add in ssome text. I u used a few diffferent fonts  with differen

nt setting heree. Just browse 
some stocck font websites and find ssomething nicce. Each font  I found is freee for personaal and commeercial 
use and thhey still look really nice. I ggenerated some meaninglless text and put it around d the drawinggs. 

Conclusio
on 

That’s it. YYou may noww adjust your image (especcially the draw
wings) by hannd as they aree certainly not 
perfect. YYou may draw w some other details and m make your imaage look evenn more realisttic. Thank youu for
