When David E. Williams, a convicted felon, barricaded
himself in a Capitol Heights home on Sept. 14, it once again
highlighted a disturbing problem in Prince George’s County:
What is being done with citizens re-entering society upon
release from prison?
According to Prince George’s County Police, the standoff
ended at about 7 a.m., Sept. 15, when Williams, 37, shot
himself because he didn’t want to return to prison. Police had
converged upon the house after its residents reported Williams
for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend’s uncle.
Marisa Mauro, a blogger for Psychology Today, spent years
working in the California Department of Corrections and
Rehabilitation as a clinical psychologist. She says Williams
may have felt there was nothing else to live for. “Oftentimes

something wrong, feel hopelessness and will therefore try
to harm themselves,” Mauro said. “Sometimes, instead of
going through that pain or bad situation, they’ll end up killing
themselves.”
In Williams’ case, that hopelessness came from the 10 years
he spent in prison for assault and battery, false imprisonment
and bribery by intimidation for trying to intimidate a juror.
For Prince George’s County officials, the cycle that
Williams and so many others repeat upon re-entering society
is an issue that many want to address in a substantial way.

Although prosecutors did not recommend
life sentences, the jury had the option of
calling for life prison terms. Jealous said that
while the sisters were guilty, the punishment
they received doesn’t fit the crime. “It is a
travesty that in the state of Mississippi, the
lives of two Black women are valued at
little more than 11 dollars,” Jealous said in a
statement. “From the outset, the measures in
which the Scott sisters were convicted were
questionable and pattern themselves after
dubious criminal justice trends in Mississippi
and nationwide. We intend to pursue justice to
the fullest extent for the Scott sisters, and will
continue our push for criminal justice reform
throughout America.”
Jealous isn’t alone in his call for
leniency. The original prosecutor in the case
has stepped forward and publicly said the
sentence is too harsh. In addition, nearly 200
protesters recently marched to the Mississippi
State Capitol to protest the sentence, but
Barbour has not taken action. The sisters’
attorney, Chokwe Lumumba, hopes Barbour
listens to the protesters and frees the sisters.
Minnesota Newspaper Claims ‘Bad
Taste’ in Racially Charged Column
The Tribune, a local newspaper based in

newspaper and said the joke was in “bad
taste.”
“People found the letter racial and
bigoted. We didn’t intend to stir up such a
mess for which we apologize most heartily,”
Marben wrote. “Our judgment on using the
article was in bad taste and we’re sorry for all
the bad feelings that it created. From now on,
we’ll stick to something that brings out the
best in all of us.”
FDA Mulls Sale of Genetically Altered
Salmon
As the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) debates whether genetically modified
(GM) Atlantic salmon should be distributed
for human consumption, many media
outlets and public health organizations are
questioning how the altered seafood would be
labeled.
Some say the government should require
the fish’s origins to be written out on product
labels while AquaBounty, the modified
salmon’s developer, said such labeling would
incite unnecessary fear among consumers.
The company maintains GM salmon has no
scientific difference than unaltered seafood.
“Food labeling is intended to provide
information on product composition and
safety,” the company said in a statement.
Because fish developed from AquaBounty’s
AquAdvantage eggs is “nutritionally and
biologically the same as any other Atlantic
salmon the consumer purchases, there is no
reason for it to be labeled as different.”
However, the Center for Food Safety
argues public opposition should sway the
FDA’s decision and said more than 300
environmental, health and animal groups,
fishing associations, food companies,
restaurateurs and chefs have signed joint
letters to the FDA asking that the GM salmon
stay off food shelves.

Army Reservist Uplifted by Visit Home

Privacy. For many Americans,
those items are banal
conveniences, but for Army
Reservist Maj. Wendi Brown,
they were luxuries for which
she gained a new appreciation
during her eight-month stint
in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
“Afghanistan has taught
me to appreciate how we
live here in America,” she
told the AFRO during a
recent interview. “The living
situation in Afghanistan is
very basic…pretty much
community living... I have
to go outside to use the
bathroom; I have to go
outside to take a shower. It’s
very different.”
That’s why returning to
the familiarity of her home
in Washington, D.C.’s Tenn
Quarter—and visiting her
parents’ home in Detroit—
during a two-week respite
earlier this month was so
comforting. Watching the
daily news, taking a shower
without dozens of other
people alongside, lazing in
a queen-size bed for a few
extra minutes offered a keener
pleasure.
“Coming back home I see
things a little different[ly],”
Brown said, including
the treasured American
pastime of shopping. “It was
interesting to see that people’s
priority was going shopping,”
added the Detroit native. “In
Afghanistan the priority is
staying alive.”
In the Middle Eastern
country, danger is a constant
reality for military personnel
such as Brown, who were
deployed to fight the “War on
Terror.”
“The Taliban bombs us at
least once a week,” she said.
“But, we’re very good with
security and accountability
so we’ve been very fortunate
to have very minimum
casualties.”
Stateside, Brown works a
nine-to-five as the assistant
director of administration and
support at the D.C. Office of
Contracting and Procurement.
In Afghanistan, the Howard
University alumna works for
approximately 12-16 hours
daily as the executive officer
of the Fourth Battalion of
the 401st Army Field Support
Brigade, which manages
transportation logistics for the
Army’s Southern Command.
“We don’t get too much
down time,” said Brown.
“Maybe on Sunday we get to
sleep in a few hours. But for
the most part, you’re putting
in long hours every day. You
keep working until the job
gets down.”
For that reason, there’s
very little socialization
between military personnel
on the base, Brown said, and
little to none between their
battalion—which is mostly
confined “in the wire,”
meaning they remain in a
secured zone and don’t go off
into the field to fight—and the
Afghan locals.
Though Brown says she
remains committed to serving
her country, that duty can take
a toll.
“I have a very strong
prayer life and I have one or

Elizabeth Seton High School

in zoology and criminology.
In 2008, she began take

Miami School Of Law. She’d
taken a break from school to
take a run at Senate.
On her website, she stated
why she was running for
office. She said it was time
that public officials are held
accountable for their actions
and that she would truly be a
representative politician.
“If I am given the privilege
of being the next United
States Senator for Maryland,
not only will my door always
be open to all, but I will
come to you,” she said. “It
is impossible to represent the
needs of Americans without
asking them what they need.
To reach some friends and
neighbors, that may mean
leaving Capitol Hill and
taking the one to the many.”
Pettigrew also mentioned
her decision to run as a Green
Party candidate because the
she said the party’s 10 key
values fit the campaign she
wanted to run. She said
the party was truly about
the people and making sure
everyone had an opportunity
to succeed.

replacement for Pettigrew.

Haiti: Accounting for the Money Some Affordable Health Care

(NNPA) — President Obama showed positive leadership
after the catastrophe in Haiti by pledging the resources of
the United States government to our neighbor in need. Yet,
eight months after the quake, many of the country’s internally
displaced persons (IDPs) remain without food, water,
sanitation and shelter. Additionally, civil society and local
non-governmental organizations in Haiti report that many
international NGOs responsible for policy and programs have
been less proactive and seldom prioritize working directly with
Haitians.
Following Jan. 12, the world stepped up. Millions of
dollars were raised and billions pledged to rebuild Haiti. I am
sad to report that, according to the United Nations Office of
the Special Envoy for Haiti, as of August 2010 the U.S. had

2010 Haiti donors conference.
Unfortunately, the U.S. is not alone in its inaction. Excluding debt relief, the top 22 donors
pledged $2.6 billion just for fiscal year 2010 alone, yet by August only 20 percent of this
($538.3 million) has been disbursed. Distrust and racism has led to historic under-funding of the
government of Haiti. By August, only $144.9 million of $538.3 million pledged had gone to the
government of Haiti. It is a positive step, despite the low numbers pledged in total. Unlike other
instances where direct funding to the government of Haiti has been nearly non-existent, this
change can hopefully build capacity and infrastructure and prevent future catastrophes. Support
of the government is important. But, with less than 0.33 percent of pledges in humanitarian aid
being spent, we see a deep disconnect.
Haiti advocates are deeply concerned that without immediate investigation, strong oversight
and accountability of funds, both private and public failures may further the impact of the
devastating quake.
My frequent visits, and receipt of daily reports from partners, remind me that the emergency
phase is not over. While reconstruction and rebuilding must move forward, conditions on the
ground remain appalling. The majority of those affected by the earthquake are living in the
same conditions they did in January. People’s ability to access basic goods (including safe and
secure housing, food, water, sanitation and health care) remains extremely limited. With little
to no income over the last eight months, those affected by the quake are forced to take drastic
measures to provide anything for their families. Additionally, an increasing number of threats
and incidents of gender based violence are being recorded. The situation on the ground requires
immediate action to remedy the precarious situation of people today.
Questions should be raised for USAID, NGO partners, and contractors who have been granted
millions of dollars with questionable results. It is imperative that the U.S. government hold
USAID, and their partner organizations, accountable for
the money spent as well as outstanding commitments.
In addition, the standards being set for acceptable
minimums are offensive and inadequate. For example,
the UN Shelter Cluster has reported that 100 percent of
the country’s shelter needs have been met. To the UN
this has meant one to two tarps and a couple of sticks,
in a tropical country during the hurricane season. If
this is considered 100 percent shelter coverage then we
must ask: what are the standards for the response in
Haiti?
There needs to be a serious investigation by
independent parties of on-the-ground activities of
large NGOs and the amount of money given to these
organizations. Many of the NGOs, who received
money, are trained as professional first responders.
It is worrisome that experts in emergency relief
work are now weighing the importance of long-term
development assistance. Relief work operates under
the guise of immediate action, much different than
development work, which includes long-term planning
and consultation.

We need to change the way we think about health in this

missed opportunities for prevention.
That’s why I’m excited to tell you about the Affordable Care Act and some very important
new benefits that take effect this week. These measures will make it easier and more affordable
for people to practice the preventive care that will help keep them healthy.
Beginning Sept. 23, new health insurance plans will be required to cover recommended
preventive services and will not be allowed to charge a deductible, co-pay or coinsurance. This
applies to services like children’s checkups, mammograms, pap smears, colon cancer screening,
vaccinations, and blood sugar testing.
These are services that help people stay well and help us detect illnesses early. In spite of
this, as a doctor I have too often seen patients put off getting preventive care – even if they have
insurance – because they can not afford the co-pay.
For instance, if a 58-year-old woman who is at risk for heart disease is recommended to have
a mammogram, a colon cancer screening, a Pap test, a diabetes test, a cholesterol test, and an
annual flu shot. Under a typical insurance plan, these tests could cost her more than $300 out of
her own pocket. Under the new law, new health plans must offer these tests at no out-of pocket
expense to her.
Expanding access to preventive services will reduce health disparities for 41 million African
Americans by helping to identify and prevent many of the diseases that have a disproportionate
impact in our community. We have some of the highest rates of chronic illness in the nation
including heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, and obesity.
Eliminating co-pays and deductibles for preventive care will also help Americans when it
comes to detecting cancer early, ensuring healthy pregnancies, and treating HIV/AIDS. While
the cost savings for these treatments will be significant for all Americans who take advantage
of this free preventive care, African Americans will gain even more, since we already spend a
higher percentage of our income on health care.
The preventive benefits that become available on Sept. 23 are just the latest reforms in
the Affordable Care Act that will help Americans stay healthy. The new law also created a
prevention council, of which I am chair, to develop a national prevention strategy for the first
time ever and coordinate prevention efforts across the federal government.
We need to use a more holistic approach to community health, from safe highways and
work site wellness programs to clean air and healthy foods. It’s especially important in many
communities that often have less access to healthy foods
and fewer opportunities for exercise. We want to make
it easier for kids and parents to make healthy choices.
With this council, I hope to move us from a system of
sick care to a system based on wellness and prevention.
At the same time, we know that the best solutions
are often innovative, local programs that are developed
and implemented by the local people who know their
communities best. That’s why Congress provided
funding through the Recovery Act for a program called,
Communities Putting Prevention to Work.
This program provides communities with the
resources to create healthy choices for residents, such as
increasing availability of healthy foods and beverages,
improving access to safe places for physical activity,
discouraging tobacco use, and encouraging smoke-free
environments. So far, this program has provided $500
million to such initiatives across the country.
By increasing access to preventive care and a
moving us towards a more community-oriented
approach to prevention, the Affordable Care Act
will help fight chronic disease in this country and
dramatically improve the health of all Americans. We
still have a long way to go, but this is a big step toward
making us a healthy and fit nation.

Retail Job Losses Contribute to Maryland Unemployment Rate Increase

WASHINGTON — Retail job
losses helped boost Maryland’s
unemployment rate to 7.3 percent
from 7.1 percent, making it one of
only two states to see a statistically
significant increase last month.
Maryland’s retail losses totaled
about 3,000, according to the
federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Another 1,400 census jobs ended, a
situation that mirrored the national
trend. Administrative and support
services sectors, which lost 1,300
jobs, and professional, scientific
and technical services, which lost
900, also contributed to the state’s
unemployment increase. Maryland’s
job losses totaled 5,600 in August.
Gov. Martin O’Malley responded
to the jobs report Tuesday while
announcing the launch of an online
job-search tool with 80,000 job
listings.
“I share the frustration of many
Marylanders whose hope for a
quick recovery process is met with
slower-than-expected job growth,”
he said in a news release. “Today’s
jobs report is further indication
that while Maryland is moving past
this national recession stronger and
more quickly than other states, there
is still work to do.”
In spite of these losses,
Maryland’s unemployment rate
remains one of the lowest in the
country, and Maryland has added
13,900 jobs since August 2009.
Nationally unemployment rose .1
percent in August to 9.6 percent.
Maryland’s retail sector sagged
over the past few months. Overall
there are fewer retail jobs now than
in August 2009. “It’s been a tough
summer,” Pat Donoho, president of
the Maryland Retailers Association
said. “May was good. June was
good. July really stunk. August was
a fairly good month. As folks look
forward, they’re going to try to
predict what Christmas is all about.”
“Retail certainly is sensitive to
the overall economy and confidence
in the economy,” said Bernie Kohn
of the Maryland Department of
Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

Baltimore’s Hippodrome Hats, a
maker and retailer of men’s hats,
said his sales are basically the same
as they were this time last year.
“We’re a destination, a niche ...
we’re not going hog wild, but we’re
doing about what we did last year.”

to keep expenses down by cutting
utility costs and working to
reduce credit card transaction
fees. Hippodrome Hats has no
employees, just Boulmetis and his
wife. “We’re flat, not growing,” he
said.
And major retailers who could
hire employees are not coming
to Baltimore because of a lack of
space and tightness in the national
credit market, said Michael Evitts
of the Downtown Partnership
of Baltimore, the organization
responsible for Baltimore Retail
Week, a discount week in April.
“It’s not for lack of demand that
retailers aren’t coming downtown,”
Evitts said, citing a survey
conducted by the organization
showing that 80 percent of
Baltimore residents shop outside the
city because of a lack of options in
Baltimore.
The retailers at Arundel Mills
mall, outside Baltimore, have seen a
strong year, said mall spokeswoman
Wendy Ellis. Because most of the
stores are discount outlets, “our
retailers are positioned to do well”
in a recession, she said.

Montgomery mall said that three
new stores opened in the past month
and five more are slated to open,
creating about 50 new jobs.

Seniors to Pack a Punch at the Polls Seniors Grapple

The adage that “it’s hard to teach an old dog new
tricks,” suggests a reluctance in elders to embrace change.
But a June 3 report, “Seniors are Strongest Advocates
for Change in 2010,” belies that saying with a well
researched pronouncement.
Perhaps because of that propensity, seniors across
political lines, as an age group, will have the strongest
impact on the coming fall elections. According to the
report, they:
• Have a more negative view of political incumbents
• Are more likely to vote (65 percent) for a
congressional candidate who has
never held elective office – the
highest percentage of any age group.
• Are less likely to vote for
a candidate willing to make
compromises.
Since this age group is predicted
to vote in higher percentages than any
other this November, these findings
bear watching.
The youth energy that fueled the
2008 election and catapulted then-

House has subsided so much that no
one expects the same kind of turnout
for the mid-terms. In fact, these
elections never see the same verve as
the presidential election years. But
the senior turnout is consistent for all

“Seniors always vote in the largest
numbers, even in off-year elections, African-American

Health care, though, is the foremost area of concern
among older voters; it was ranked among the top five

registration is fairly close across party lines according to

Maturing Faith: A Return to Childlike Trust

I was 7 or 8 years old when I accepted Jesus as savior. I had
a daddy in heaven that was bigger, stronger, and more powerful
than my earthly daddy. This was amazing, but I simply accepted
it on faith.
Faith was easy and uncomplicated in those early days. It was
nurtured by the faith-walk of my parents at home; early Sunday
school lessons; and the saints whom I watched closely in the
church.
When I needed anything, I just prayed, expecting God to
provide whatever I needed. I never doubted that he could or
would. Easy, childlike faith.
But that was before life started happening: daddy got sick
and didn’t get well; “the ship” that would come bearing relief
from our constant financial struggles never arrived; bigoted
teachers gave me lower grades than they gave my White
classmates even when I had done superior work. Loved ones
died; people I admired disappointed me; I got sick. Weeping
endured long past the night.
Trouble had a new home at my address, and faith was no
longer that simple. What had happened to my God? Was he
now deaf? Had I offended him in some way? Were there more
sins I needed to repent for in some more fervent way?
The belief that God was constantly attentive to me and
would do whatever I needed Him to do was tinged with an
uncomfortable uncertainty.
As I wrestled with this doubt-tinged, question-laced faith,
I discovered what I believe to be the core challenge of aging
faith. How do I pierce life’s fog of doubt enshrouding the faith
of my childhood and recapture the assurance of the God who
wills good for me?
Then I remembered a day when I went out with my dad. I
didn’t know the destination or how to get there. Along the way, there were some frightening
sights. One was a home that had burned to the ground, taking the lives of the eight or so
occupants – six of whom were young children. The charred remains of the building and the idea

me to death. So, I begged daddy to go around the block and not
pass the house so that I didn’t have to see the ugly remnants of
disaster, destruction, and death.
Instead of avoiding the ruins, daddy took a tighter hold on
my hand, reassured me that I would be fine as long as I stayed
with him and kept my hand in his, and walked me right past the
burned- out building. Disaster, death and destruction did not
touch me in spite of my fears. I was fine and safe. I was with
daddy. He knew the destination, how to get there, and how to
navigate the difficult places. I had only to hold on tight to his
hand. He would get me safely home.
Aging faith requires that I remember all the places God has
safely taken me – down unknown roads; through uncertain days;
across valleys of despair; up off sick beds; out of grief’s gorge;
and through weeping nights. At every turn in the road and with
every step, He held me tight and got me safely through.
Aging faith demands that I remember all these and hold
tight to the hand that has never let me slip; the promise keeper
who has never disappointed; the burden bearer who lent me his
strength to endure; the mapmaker who knows the route; the one
with the matchless name whom I need more than ever on this
final leg of the journey.

In the past 20 years, Hand Dance has gained ground.
It was deemed the official dance of Washington, D.C.,
by resolution of the city council and earned national
attention on the Swing Dance circuit. With weekly events
and national competitions held annually, Hand Dance has
become a culture of class, history and family.
As it moves from one generation to the next, Hand
Dance is evolving, shifting from the “Old School”
emphasis on footwork to the “New School,” which tends to
use more linear executions. The changes are dismissed by a
few but generally accepted by most dancers.
“It is progressing as everything else in this world
is progressing. The only thing we have consistent in
this world is change. And there is no reason why the
dance should not or will not undergo changes just like
everything else,” says Bradford.
And there are plans in the works to document those
changes. The National Hand Dance Association (NHDA)
was founded in 1994 to promote Hand Dance through
community visibility and education. The non-profit
organization, which consists of 400 members across
various affiliates and chapters, is working on a project to
document the history of the art form.
“Hand Dance is part of the fabric of Washington,
D.C.,” says NHDA President Beverly Lindsay-Johnson.
“The dance is a tradition of [the District] and it’s
important to continue to preserve the dance through our
young people. Our young people are grabbing hold of this
dance, putting their own spin to it and making it their own
for their generation.”

The male chorus from John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church in Washington, D.C., recently
traveled to England for three performances at the Ransom A.M.E. Zion Church in
Battersea, London. The chorus, directed by Robert Gill, is comprised of members who
attend different churches and study various denominations. Salone T. Clary Sr., director/
organist for The Cathedral Choir at John Wesley, also traveled to London with the group.
The male chorus usually ministers on the third Sunday of each month and performs
at venues throughout the metropolitan area. The Rev. Vernon Shannon, pastor and
member of the chorus, played a major role in getting the group
to perform at the A. M. E. Zion Church’s London – Midland Ransom A.M.E. Zion

District’s Monthly Concert Series Marks Return

Everybody loves good music, but few want to “break the bank”
to see a good show. Now, with the return of local group Triple Sound
Stage’s monthly concert series, District residents can accomplish the
seemingly impossible feat of experiencing quality performances at
affordable prices.
“We’re trying to bring good R&B and neo soul to the [District],”
Micheline Bowman, news coordinator at FOX 5 and event host told
the AFRO in a recent interview. “Tickets are in the $20 price range—
you can’t even park Downtown before you get into a concert arena
for that. We’re trying to bring a good variety of entertainment, so this
is just the beginning.”
Originally introduced in 2009, Triple Star Sound Stage has
brought many well-known artists to the region, including Grammy-
nominated singer Emily King, Kindred the Family Soul and Natalie
Stewart, formerly one half of the R&B duo Floetry.
R&B songstress Vivian Green and soul crooner Chico DeBarge
will kick off the series at this month’s event, while other acts are set
to debut later this year.
“Whoever we think will [offer] a great, entertaining night, we go
after,” Bowman said.
Philadelphia native Vivian Green came out in 2002 with the
release of her album A Love Story, which was certified gold. Her
most recent album Beautiful, debuted earlier this year. Detroit native
Chico DeBarge, brother of the popular Motown family act DeBarge,
released his self-titled debut album in 1986, which spawned the
success of his hit single “Talk to Me.” His latest album Addiction
was released in 2009.
According to Bowman, the series is anticipated to greatly exceed
last year’s outcome, mainly because of its relocation to Cramton
Auditorium at Howard University. Event coordinators hope District
residents’ first experience at a Triple Star Sound show will spark
regular attendance in the future. They believe the event’s affordable
prices in addition to other perks like door prizes and entertainment in
between acts is what sets them apart from other venues.
“This will be our first time at Cramton. Last year, we had it at
THEARC Theater and we had a great turnout,” Bowman said. “Now
that we’re having it a bigger venue, we’re hoping that once people
come out and experience Triple Star, they’ll come back out because
it’s definitely not your ordinary concert.”

Vick’s Performance Takes
Backseat to Politics

I absolutely hate pulling the race card.
It’s a last-minute, last resort kind of thing
for me. But if Michael Vick doesn’t start at
quarterback next week for the Philadelphia
Eagles, I’ll be tempted to swipe it.

There seems to be “much ado” over
the sanctions on Reggie Bush for his
improprieties during the 2005 football
season at USC. As far as the harshness of
the penalties handed down by the NCAA,
there seems to be a line drawn right down
the middle.
When you examine this issue, it is hard
to come up on the right side of the coin. The
deal here is the fact that Bush received some
cash from some agents that were deemed
a “loan” in order to purchase a home for
his parents. All was well until one of the
“lending parties” blew the whistle because
Bush chose another agent.
The issue isn’t whether he borrowed the
money; the big deal is who he borrowed it
from. If Bush went to his next door neighbor
and borrowed $500 grand and promised to
pay it back when he reached the pros, there
would be no big deal. If he went to a bank
and signed up for the $500k—no problem.
The NCAA couldn’t touch him and it would
be business as usual.
And, while we are on the subject of gifts,
the NCAA seems to be a bit nearsighted
when it comes to selective sanctions. Not
to defend Bush, but I don’t recall him ever
making the news because he was arrested.
However, we hear every season of some
programs using athletes who have run afoul
of the law.
Gifts are common place when it comes
to stud athletes. I hope the NCAA doesn’t
think that some of these athletes who are
sporting Rolex watches and driving Porches
are the beneficiaries of the deaths of rich
uncles.
There are some programs where an
athlete can return to his locker and find an
envelope that wasn’t delivered by the mail
man. Trust me, these are not invitations to
listen to a lecture on real estate investments.
To put an end to some of the hoopla
surrounding this issue, Bush has decided
to return the Heisman Trophy he won in
2005. It’s a nice gesture, but for my money
entirely unnecessary. There are more than
a few Heisman recipients who have found
their cash flow problems resolved by a little
gift under the table.
What a lot of people don’t understand
is the crappy existence of a scholarship
athlete. A good percentage of them come
from a low-income environment, and those
of you who have attended college know
there is no better feeling than going to your
mail box and opening that letter with a few
bucks from home. These kids don’t get
the monetary care package from home and
because they are on scholarship, they can’t
hold a job. This too is an NCAA violation.
The big question for most is, “Should
Bush return the Heisman?”
If so, shouldn’t USC return the cash from
ticket sales resulting from all of the butts
he put in the seats? How about the sales
of jerseys sporting the No. 5? Shouldn’t
USC return the checks Bush helped them
pocket by taking them to the National
Championship game twice?

For all intents and purposes, the NCAA
can’t touch Bush since he has been five
years removed from this issue. And if the
money is an issue, Bush probably carries
that much around just in case he sees a
Lamborghini in a color he likes.
It hurts to see the bomb being dropped
on USC, because the school probably had no
clue that this was an issue in their back yard.
If my cousin holds up a bank, I don’t think
the rest of my family should be arrested. The
loss of 30 scholarships over three years and
the ban from Bowl games is a little harsh for
my money.
USC Coach Pete Carroll jumped on a bus
and went to Seattle to coach the Seahawks.
This was a smart move since it was as far
away from the drama and the NCAA he can
get without leaving the planet.
I find it amusing that Vince Young now
wants the Heisman since he placed second
in the 2005 voting. Bush finished so far in
front of him you couldn’t find him with
binoculars. Maybe he thinks Reggie should
give him his Super Bowl ring, too.
As far as the main issue is concerned, I
think this is a classic example of a group of
people looking for a way to justify the job
they are holding. If they want to make an
impression, they should be going after the
criminals that emerge every season. When
I look at the total picture and see that all
of this drama is about a loan, I ask myself,
“What’s the big deal?”

complaint. He was initially
charged for grand larceny just
a week earlier stemming from
the same Sept. 9 dispute. The
33-year-old boxer also faces
one misdemeanor domestic
battery and three harassment
charges.
According to police,
Mayweather allegedly beat
and threatened to kill his ex
and mother of his children,
Josie Harris, then took
her phone following the
altercation. If Mayweather is
convicted on all eight charges,
he could face up to 34 years
in jail.
Mayweather’s attorney,
Richard Wright, told The
Associated Press he hadn’t
seen the new complaint report
and denied all wrongdoing
on his client’s behalf. If
Mayweather, who was
released on a $3,000 bail
and is expected to meet in
court on Nov. 9, does beat the
