Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

• This lesson supports all learners including English Language Learners (ELLs) with the use of visual aids and
auditory resources. Students also are provided with opportunities to select how their information will be
presented to allow multiple options for representation and encourage the use of creativity.

Lesson idea implementation:

• The teacher will begin the lesson by asking the students to think about items that they notice in the day
sky and night sky. The teacher will provide wait time as the students consider the prompt. After the
students have time to come up with ideas and answers, the class will have a short discussion. Then, the
teacher will show the students a PowerPoint or multimedia presentation to the students. The
presentation addressed the standard: SKE1. The students will be given the opportunity to preview the
material and learn what items belong in the day and the night skies.

• After the students watch the video/PowerPoint, they will then be placed into groups. Each group of
students will be asked to select one item or object from a certain type of sky. The teacher can assign the
topics to the groups, or the students can pull a topic out of a hat from a random draw. The students will
then work together to research online information about their object and topic. For example, if students
are researching the moon, then they can find appropriate images and information about the moon that
will help them to remember that the moon is found in the night sky. The students will then use a
Microsoft Word or PowerPoint and create a digital flyer about their information. The students will then
have an opportunity to share their flyer with the class by presenting it and its information.

• The students will be assessed by their ability to work with their peers, the information they put on their
flyer, their creativity, and completion of the activity. After the students present their flyers, the teacher
will recap the differences of items in the day or night sky and state the I Can Statement to the students to
close the lesson and activity.

Reflective Practice:
• The further extend this lesson and enhance the project, students can create short videos presenting their
flyers. The videos or short presentations can be posted to the classroom blog for parents and other
teachers to view. This lesson’s activity allows for student creativity in applying knowledge, and providing
students with these opportunities can create more motivated learners.
