How to use the Decodable Books:

1. Purpose: The decodable books are designed to provide


additional practice with text, and to develop fluency in oral
reading. In order to develop fluency, it is important that
children be allowed adequate repeated practice with familiar
words in connected text. For this reason, decodables are
intended to be read up to 5 times a piece, and the words
included in the decodables are taken from stories 5 or more
lessons prior to the lesson indicated.
2. Frequency: Each decodable is introduced following a Mastery
Test in Lesson Extensions. The first decodable book is
presented following the mastery test at Lesson 25 in Lesson
Extensions. A new decodable will be presented following the
mastery test every 5 lessons throughout the remainder of the

Stickers:
There is a sticker chart provided in the front of the
decodable booklet. Each time the decodable is
read, your child or student can put a sticker in the
corresponding chart. This will help keep track of and
reinforce the number of times the decodable is read.
*Prosody – a simple definition of prosody is to make your reading
‘sound like talking’ through good expression and intonation. Fluent
reading is not only accurate, but also pleasant to listen to.
