Activity: Begin PP- GDP & HDI Individual/ Group activities


 Ask students to recall previous lesson content- What is GDP?
 Students watch the following video: Real GDP Per Capita and Class discussion

Introduce: Quantitative indicators: The Human Development Index video
 Students copy notes into their workbooks from PP
Measuring wellbeing: The Human Development Index
 Students watch the following

Video shows the basic concept of HDI (Human Development Index), by
using four different examples (Japan, Mexico, India and Angola).
Activity: Students complete the following:
 Classify the table of indicators as either quantitative or qualitative
 Copy notes into workbook from PP
 Visit: http://hdr.undp.org/en/countries/profiles/AUS and look at
where Australia is ranked on the HDI
Activity: Answer the following question in workbooks:
Education is used to determine HDI.
1. Look at the Education table on the HDI website.
2. Choose two components under the ‘Education’ heading
3. Write 1 paragraph per sub-heading explaining why these
categories are important measurements that contribute to
Australia’s economy and to Australia’s wellbeing/ development
as a nation
Activity: Using the graph presented on figure 2. Students answer:
Explain why you think Australia has seen different degrees of progress
when compared to the USA?
