How to Link Animations to Powerpoint Slides

The “Winter Operations Awareness: Takeoff Operational Safety Enhancement”

initial and recurrent powerpoint versions make use of embedded animations of
accidents and incidents on several slides. These animations are linked to in the
downloadable version of the presentation, and provided the powerpoint file and
the associated animations are unzipped to the same folder and are kept together,
they should function correctly.

However, recognizing that some users may need to relocate the files, or merge
the powerpoint material within their own winter operations preparedness
briefings, the following advice is provided for re-linking the animations.

Firstly, note the association of the animations with their indicated slides:

Animation Name Initial Presentation Recurrent Presentation

animation4.avi Slide #13 Slide #8
animation6.avi Slide #17 Slide #10
animation7a.avi Slide #19 Slide #12

The initial presentation is used for the following example, but similar steps would
apply for the recurrent presentation.

Firstly, locate the animation files and the powerpoint material. It is best to locate
the animations in the same folder as the powerpoint file.

Open the powerpoint file, and view it in presentation mode. If the animation(s) do
not start when clicked, this likely indicates that the links to the animation files are
broken and should be replaced.
Open the presentation using MS Powerpoint and use the “Normal View”. Move to
the slide with the animation object, right-click on the animation picture and “Cut”
the animation. This will remove the old, broken, animation.

A grey rectangular area remains on the page. Now, click on the Insert option,
then select “Movies and Sounds” and then “Movie from file …”:
This will open a file dialog; navigate in your system until you locate the folder with
the animation files.

Double click on the file name desired and the file will be inserted into the
powerpoint slide.
Select the “When Clicked” option to only start the movie when clicked, not when
the slide displays. Also, click and drag the corners of the video to resize it within
the grey box, according to artistic preference. Then, right-click on the now-
resized animation and select “Edit Movie Object”:

Select the “rewind” and “Zoom” options shown and click “OK”

To check the animation plays properly, select “presentation View” and click on
the movie image – it should snap to full screen and start to play.

Repeat the process above for all three animations in each presentation.
