Abstract

This study aims to determine the correlation between the external factors of
tardiness and to their academic performance. Descriptive method with the aid of
adopted questionnaire was employed as the main tool in gathering data. The
respondent of the study are the one-hundred (100) Grade 8 students of Santo Nino
Institute of Getafe, Bohol Inc. S.Y. 2017-2018. Through analysis and interpretation of
data, using simple percentage it revealed that most of the respondents were at the
age of 13-14 years old. It also revealed that there are more female than male since
there are (53) females while there are only (47) males. In addition, the respondent’s
performance revealed that out of 100 there are 29 who got a grade of 80-84. It was
shown also that the most significant factor affecting academic performance of the
students were interpreted to sometimes with a total weighted mean of 2.12. Using
Chi-square test of Contingency, the correlation between age and academic
performance is not significant. The correlation between gender and external factors
is significant. In addition, the correlation between gender and academic performance
is not significant. The correlation between gender and external factors is not
significant. Therefore, the age of the respondents does not affect the academic
performance but greatly affects the external factors and gender of the respondents
does not affect the academic performance and external factors. Furthermore, there
is a significant correlation between external factors of tardiness and the academic
performance. Therefore, external factors affect the academic performance of the
students. It is recommended that school should monitor and record all the student’s
attendance and improve the guidelines of attendance policy, administrators should
implement tardiness policy and eliminate tardiness among students, teachers should
encourage and motivate students to come early at school and future thesis writers
are encourage to do further studies about external factors of tardiness to make study
more valid and reliable.
