The 2012 IPSC calendar year has begun
with us hitting the ground running!
The honour of hosting the first IPSC
sanctioned Level III match ever to
recognise our recently added Classic
Division goes to IPSC Australia and their
South Australian State Titles, which were
held from 27 January. Early indications
are that this new division will prove to be
very popular worldwide.
It also became apparent during my visit
to the 2012 SHOT Show in Las Vegas
that gun makers are expecting business
in 1911-genre single-stack pistols to be
brisk over the next 12 months.
2012 will also be an exciting year for
major matches. In July, we have the
Level IV European Rifle Championships
in Bulgaria, to be closely followed in
early September by the Level IV African
Handgun Championships in Zimbabwe,
and the inaugural Level V Shotgun World
Championships in Hungary at the end of
September.
At the other end of the world, we have
the Level IV Pan American Handgun
Championships to be held in October in
Paraguay, which will also host the 2012
IPSC Assembly. This will definitely be

on Tsarevets, one of the three hills on which the city was
built, and Trapezitsa, the second fortress of the inner city on
the right bank of the Yantra River.
Local culinary delights to expect include tantalising
Shishcheta skewers, and Tatarsko kyufte (stuffed meatballs),
washed down with Bulgarian Mavrud wine, likely to be an
entirely new experience for wine aficionados who have yet to
savour the high quality wines now produced in the country.

IPSC LEVEL IV AFRICAN HANDGUN CHAMPIONSHIP,
ZIMBABWE
This event will be held in early September 2012 in Bulawayo,
the “City Of Kings”, and the second largest city in Zimbabwe
after the capital Harare.
INAUGURAL IPSC LEVEL V WORLD SHOTGUN
CHAMPIONSHIP, HUNGARY
The distinct honour of hosting IPSC Shotgun World Shoot I
has been awarded to IPSC Hungary.
This landmark event will take place during September 2012,
in the charming city of Debrecen, which is the second largest
city in the country after the capital Budapest.
Over 400 competitors, from 32 of our 90 Regions, will
face 30 challenging courses of fire, requiring a total of 400
rounds. The mix of ammunition includes birdshot, buckshot
and slug, with courses of fire and tight target arrays requiring

competitors know how their shotguns pattern at various
distances.
In addition to the fun and adrenalin rush the match will
provide, competitors will undoubtedly enjoy the quaintness
and serenity of the surrounding area during their free time.
Moreover, participants will certainly experience tasting
culinary delights such as the national soup Goulash, which
originated in Hungary. However, let’s not forget the regional
specialty Debreceni sausage with mustard. For those with
a sweet tooth, Gundel Palacsinta, a delicious crepe dessert
filled with nuts and decorated with chocolate sauce, will
bring a smile to their faces.
IPSC LEVEL IV PAN-AMERICAN HANDGUN
CHAMPIONSHIP, PARAGUAY
This consistently exciting match will be held in Asunción,
the capital city of Paraguay, where over 400 competitors are
expected to fire a minimum of 450 rounds, as they seek to
successfully navigate the 24 challenging courses of fire.

IPSC LEVEL IV AUSTRALASIA HANDGUN
CHAMPIONSHIP, NEW ZEALAND
Over 500 competitors, hailing from all corners of IPSC’s
Australasia Zone and beyond, will contend with 24
challenging courses of fire, requiring a total of 450 rounds.
This match, a joint-venture between IPSC Australia and
IPSC New Zealand, will be held in February 2013 in the
idyllic surroundings of Rotorua, the tourism capital of New
Zealand.
Rotorua, situated in the Bay Of Plenty region on the North
Island of New Zealand, has considerable geothermal activity,
in the form of geysers and bubbling mud pools. Additionally,
there are 17 lakes, and these offer an extensive selection of
water sports. For the truly daring, New Zealand is arguably
the world headquarters for bungee jumping!
Foodies who love the taste of lamb will easily be satisfied
in New Zealand, and the best way to enjoy lamb is to have
it cooked Maori-style in an earthen oven, known locally as
a Hangi.

Southern Vales is the largest and most active IPSC shooting
club in the State of South Australia and, with the ability to
run 16 stages simultaneously, it is a great facility to hold
the State’s premier IPSC shooting event. However, on this
occasion, only 14 shooting bays were utilised.

The range complex is perched high above the Onkaparinga

River, 30 kilometres south of the State capital Adelaide. The
range is surrounded by numerous vineyards and boutique
wineries, which are famous for Shiraz and other varieties of
red wine.

One stage used the IPSC Mini Target, which most participants
had never previously experienced. The target attracted a
considerable amount of attention, with most competitors
taking a tad longer than usual aligning their sights, in order
to avoid dreaded misses.
The stages also offered competitors multiple opportunities
to see and engage targets from various vantage points. This
gave everyone from novices to Grand Masters different
options to complete the courses of fire at their respective
skill levels.
The Pre-Match for Match Officials and Sponsors was held
on the Friday before the main match.
The day started early to take advantage of the cooler weather
but, with temperatures quickly rising to 40C in the shade and
47C in the open, continual hydration was the order of the
day. Nonetheless, by the end of the day, it was obvious that
the heat had taken a toll.
However, as testament to their unwavering dedication to our
sport, everyone arrived early next morning for breakfast, and
they were on the line, raring to go as officials in the main

McLaren Vale, Australia
match, which again proved to be another day with sweltering
heat. Despite this, the main match started on time and ran
smoothly over the next two days.
The match was attended by competitors from as far away as
Thursday Island in the far north of the State of Queensland,
and from Perth, the State capital of Western Australia, a round
trip in a straight line of 5,525 and 4,252kms respectively.
Of course, those travels were entirely within the borders of
Australia, the world’s greatest island, or the world’s smallest
continent, depending upon your viewpoint.
We also had one competitor from regional neighbour New
Zealand. Despite the well-known rivalry between the two
sports-crazy Nations, the lone Kiwi was treated humanely,
and was not required to wear the usual warning sign!
The match was the first Level III in Australia to operate
under the 2012 rulebook. No problems were encountered
with any of the new rules or rule changes.
The match was also proud to be the first in the world where
an IPSC President’s Medal was awarded in the new Classic
South Australian Handgun Championship McLaren Vale, Australia

Division. Although the new division only attracted eleven

competitors, we are certain that participation will grow at
future matches.

The smiles on the faces of competitors indicated they had

enjoyed the stages, and many commented on the high
quality of the match.

During the Awards Dinner, the combined efforts of

IPSC South Australia, Southern Vales Practical Shooting
League, Match Officials from all over the country, and
a fully supportive team of family and friends, were
heartily congratulated on conducting a challenging and
professionally run event.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the IPSC spirit is alive

and well Down Under, and that our future remains bright.

REGION: Venezuela

Venezuela is strategically located in
the north part of South America. It is
the birthplace of one of the greatest
man of all time, Simon Bolivar, who
liberated 7 nations from the Spanish in
the 18th century. With fantastic weather
and enviable natural resources (most
predominantly oil), Venezuela is without
doubt one of the most diverse and
promising countries in the continent.
The official language of Venezuela is
Spanish. With a population of almost 28
million, the capital city Caracas hosts a
republican government. The country’s
main export is oil.
IPSC Venezuela was formed in 1981,
originally named “Liga Nacional de Tiro

Practico” (National League of Practical
Shooting). The origins of the region were
somewhat challenging, especially getting
the denomination of “Federation” versus
“League” in the eyes of the government.
After all was sorted out in large part thanks
to the hard work of Mr. Carlos Antich and
J.J. Carrasquero, IPSC Venezuela started
setting up matches at military facilities
that provided all the support to the
organization.
IPSC Venezuela currently has more than
200 active members and 5 active IROA
officials (currently there is a sixth in the
process of application).
Starting this year and under the umbrella
of FETIP (Federacion de Tiro Practico

de Venezuela) the directorate started the budgeting for 5 nationals across
the country. In addition, IPSC Venezuela has the benefit of counting among
its active members (for more than 15 years now) the current Director of the
DAEX (Direccion Nacional de Armas y Explosivos), the highest government
authority that regulates firearms and ammonition in the country.

IPSC Venezuela is currently self-supported and funds come from membership

affiliation. Conversations are under way and they expect to receive government
funding for the year 2012. In any case, the region expects to organize 5
Nationals and one Venezuelan Open. Venezuelan shooters always attend
important regional matches like Columbus Cup and World Shoot. Its current
Regional Director, Mr. Mauricio Buono, is an active IROA officer and worked
as range officer for the last World Shoot XVI celebrated in Rhodes, Greece.

“I started IPSC in 2006 with a .45ACP Norinco Single Stack, switched to a CZ 75-01 and

How did you first hear about IPSC?
Shooting is a widely popular sporting discipline in my
home country Philippines, and I was aware of the sport
since I was very young; it is different and not common with
any other other sport, because if you watch a shooter that is
good and well known you will be amazed, and you will say
that shooting is cool!
For how long you have been shooting?
I have been shooting for almost four years now and I hope
to continue for many more!
What division you shoot and why?
I shoot Open Division because for me if you start shooting
open at young age, you will be a good shooter in the future.
Almost all the junior shooters are in open division, that’s
why its nice to shoot Open because your competition is in
the same age bracket, and also it is very cool to have friends
my same age that also shoot IPSC.
shooting requires very focused and high level training and
safety is the most important thing we care about.
What inspired you to begin shooting?
For me I think my father and my brother, because they
were the first ones in my family that started shooting and
both of them showed me that their heart and interests are in
shooting. That’s why I want to become a professional and a
hardworking friendly shooter.
What do your friends and family think
about you shooting IPSC?
They have showed me all the support that I need and they
are so proud of me especially when I go up to the stage to
get an award! I love making my family and friends proud.
I know they support me because they know I am being safe
and also I love the sport.

What is the coolest about IPSC

shooting?
It is cool because its different from other sports. Although it
might seem as easy as shooting guns in a videogame, IPSC

I believe what happens to me is the same that happens to
other shooters: when I’m shooting well in a competition
and yet, I still have stages to go. I’m bothered to have
mistakes or errors.

I used to play basketball but now I enjoy more shooting. I
try to keep active because being in good physical shape is
important when shooting IPSC.

with shooting?
I think sports like basketball, track and field, etc. help

it will help you to do well in shooting.

Picture a typical day at a match: It’s warm outside. As you body can produce it. What are the signs? Actually, we have

capable of better and you know it. What is happening? “It
must be the heat because the other guys out here are hurting
too” you reason. But in that moment, it’s not the heat. The
other guys are hurting because they are experiencing the
same issue you are.

The technical term for the issue is exercise-induced

hypoglycemia. Translation: You have very low blood sugar
because you used your stores of blood sugar faster than your

So how do we fix this? For starters, we need to recognize
that each and every one of us has different nutritional needs.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach. You can not simply
dump carbohydrates into your body and hope for the best.
Too few carbohydrates and you won’t gain the energy you
need and you will remain hypoglycemic or at best return
to a hypoglycemic state shortly after you eat. Too many
carbohydrates and your blood sugar will skyrocket. If that
happens, your body will secrete too much insulin. Insulin is
a storage hormone and its job is to remove the sugar from
your blood and store it. So insulin can actually cause the
hypoglycemia you are trying to defeat, due to the nature of
the hormone itself and the pathway by which it is released in
the human body. This is where our individual carbohydrate
tolerances come into play. And this is where the challenge is.
The first step to the puzzle is to assess and determine your
carbohydrate needs. And those needs vary greatly person
to person. The best way for you to do this at home is to
simply journal normal eating for the next few days. Do not
change your eating patterns or the foods. Be as precise as
you can be here. After a couple of days, average out the daily
carbohydrate intake. This will be your baseline.
Once you have your averages, start planning your meals
around them a bit. Try to hit those numbers consistently. In
doing so your body weight will not change much because
your overall caloric intake will be right about the same.

Practical Fitness
Many of you likely have weight loss goals and these same
principles also dictate energy balance in the body. That
means if properly applied, you can easily lose weight doing
this. However that is a topic for another day and another
article. As it applies here, however your blood sugar will
be more stable if you stick to moderate carbohydrate intake
throughout the course of a given day. Doing so will help you
a lot each day. But when we make sure that is the case on the
day of your event, you will see a tremendous jump in your
level of performance. Once you have the right foundation,
you can begin to plan out your nutritional strategy as it
relates to the actual competition and that is going to take you
to the next level, guaranteed.
In the next article we will talk about “Peaking” for an event,
which is the concept of arriving at your physical peak at
the precise moment in time you need it. Because when the
competition starts, you need to be able to run the last stage of
fire as effectively and as well as the first. And that is what a
good peaking strategy will give you the ability to do!

on our Match Calendar over the next 12
months ensures that we will have a busy
series of call-ups for these important
events, each of which requires the services
of IROA officials.
Now that the deadline for 2011 points
reporting has passed, I am delighted to
announce that our cadre of IROA officials
is at a record high of 431 officials,
comprised of 36 Range Masters, 68 Chief
Range Officers, 266 Range Officers, 22
Stats Officers and 61 Provisional Officers.
However, despite having such a strong
team, IROA is only represented in 52 of
our 90 Regions, so we still have a long
way to go with recruitment and training,
not only in our more established Regions,

in their formative stage.
As far as the geographical locations
of IROA Officials is concerned, IPSC
Philippines continues to lead the field
with 60 members, followed by Germany
with 48 members, and Greece with 32
members.
The IROA Executive is currently updating
the IROA Handbook and, once it has been
approved by the 2012 IPSC Assembly in
Asuncion, Paraguay, it will be uploaded
to the IROA page at the IPSC website,
which itself is undergoing a variety of
upgrades.
We are also in the process of updating
the IROA Level I and Level II Seminar
materials, in order to bring them up-
to-date with the January 2012 Edition
Rulebooks. We apologise for the delay in
releasing the updated Seminar materials,
but we are also revising the format, based on feedback we
obtained over the past 12 months.

I also remind officials that, in addition to the official

English language version rulebooks which are available for
download from the IPSC website, a number of unofficial
foreign language versions are also available, and further
versions are also under development.

Finally, I urge officials not to wait until the end of 2012

before reporting points earned. In fact, it is a good idea to
enter your points online the day after the match you have
served has ended. This way, you can avoid a last minute
panic next January.

Q - How many years have you been officiating?
I started with IPSC shooting in 1999, right when the sport
started in Serbia. The first time I took a timer into my hands
was in the middle of 2001, and from that point on I have
been officiating on almost every match to date.
I completed the Level 1 IROA seminar in 2006 in Podgorica
(Montenegro); in addition I became an accredited IROA
Range Officer in 2008. Finally in 2009 I completed the
Level 2 IROA seminar in Thessaloniki (Grecce). I was
promoted to IROA CRO later that year.
Q - What do you like best about officiating?
For me the best thing about officiating a match is the team
work and dedication of everybody involved. Without that
very hard work it would be impossible to celebrate a good
match.
Another thing I love about officiating is meeting new people
and making new friends from different countries as well as

having the opportunity to travel around the world and the
continous learning experiences from every match.
Q - What was your most memorable match?

My most memorable match without any doubt was the 2010
European Handgun Championship in Belgrade, Serbia.

The title of the first issue of the IPSCWorld magazine “AN
EPIC BATTLE OF THE KNIGHTS!” describes this match
in the right way. We as the hosts of this match wanted to
mark the 10 year development of the IPSC sport in Serbia

in the right way – with the best possible organization of
this match. I worked on the preparations of the match for 5
weeks including the match itself. All of the people working
on the match worked very hard from sunrise to sunset, even
overnight when needed.
The biggest pleasure for all of us were the commendations

of the competitors and the IPSC officials. I was very
honored to be appointed by IPSC President Nick Alexakos
as the second RM, while Milan Trkulja was the match RM.

Q - In addition to a timer, what other equipment do you
use?
Together with the lastest issue of the IPSC Rules book, the
timer and the scoring overlays I always carry a Leatherman
style toolkit on my belt. In my bag I also have a staple gun.

Q - What advice do you have for aspiring new officials ?

A good IROA official must be a good person first and

foremost. He or she must be able to see everything happening
on the course of fire, even those little details others don’t see
and to understand the competitors.

In addition he or she must always keep control on the stage,

area or match depending of the role he or she is performing
and must be professional and willing to treat competitors
in the same way whether they are beginners or world
champions.

The official must always be honest, objective and courteous,

if he or she wants to be a good official and to be treated with
