Universal Design for Learning (UDL): To address Universal Design for Learning into my lesson, I could have a
reading pen available for my students. This would be especially beneficial for English language learners, as the
reading pen can read slowly aloud for these students. In addition, the reading pen would work great for
students who are struggling readers, as the pen is able to read aloud certain words that they do not
understand, or are unable to pronounce. The reading pen will come in handy when students are able to refer
back to their books to answer the questions.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The SRT activity will be used to ensure that students are doing their nightly assigned readings. I will assign
certain chapters to students each week, and will use the SRT quizzes to assess student knowledge of what
they are reading. Students will be able to refer back to their books while taking the quiz, but will not have
time to search through the entire book to find their answers, so they should come to class prepared for the
quiz. I will have these quizzes over assigned chapters every Friday, as students will be given Monday-Thursday
to read their chapters. Prior to starting the quiz, I will pass out the reading pens to students that need extra
support when looking through their books.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☒ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity The student will be asked to get on their
computers and log onto Socrates. They will be given a code that will allow them to start the quiz. Each quiz is
8 questions, and is an assortment of multiple choice and true/false questions. While this lesson is student
paced, they will be given 20 minutes to complete the entire quiz. During the quiz, the teacher will walk
around and monitor students to ensure that they are keeping their eyes on their own computer and not
sharing books with other students. The only materials needed for this lesson are a computer and their books.
There might be some students in the class who are allowed to use reading pens during the quiz, but I will
assign these to students prior to the quiz.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
I have provided a sample
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
This will be used as a formative assessment, and the answers to these questions are straight forward and
used to assess the students on their weekly reading. At the end of the quiz, I will display the correct answers
so students know how well they did, or if they need to go back and re-read some areas.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity, I will display the correct answers so students will know their grade. I will then have a
class discussion over the quiz, and discuss each question and where they found their answers in the book.
During this time, I will use questioning to scaffold students to depend their learning, and we will talk about
each characters feelings, and have the students draw inferences from their readings.
How will the data be used? This is a graded formative assessment and the data from this quiz will be used to
award a grade. This is a small grade and will not be highly weighted, but it will give students an incentive to
read if they know that there is an upcoming quiz. The grades will be posted so parents are able to view them
and see how well their child is obtaining information from the book. While I will not go into detail about
which students missed each question, I will discuss trends that I noticed and address any misconceptions that
the students had during the quiz. If I had an English language learner in the class, I will differentiate for them
by allowing them to use the reading pen, or have a simplified version of the quiz for these students that give
simple, one word answers.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

For this activity, I am hoping that students will improve on retaining information for their readings and be
able to refer back of the book and show evidence of their answers. In addition, I used several quiz questions
where students have to make inferences based on context clues. For example, one question asks about how
Auggie’s mom feels during these chapters, and the book does not explicitly say how she is feeling. The
students are supposed to use context clues from their book and deices which choice fits best. This aligns with
the standard and will help students learn that they need to be making implicit assumptions as well, rather
than just referring to what the book is explicitly saying.

Reflective Practice: I think this activity is beneficial for the students, as it mixes questions that are
straightforward and explicitly stated in the book with questions where they have to infer and think about. I
designed this quiz as a practice tool, to assess their knowledge and understanding of the book and to prepare
for the end of unit test over this book. To further extend this lesson, I could divide students into groups and
assign one question per group, where students have to role play and reenact the scene in the book where this
question is found. If I wanted to incorporate other technology tools, I could have students write down scripts
in a Word document, before they present the play to the class.
