BP Energy Outlook 2035

Country and regional insights - India

We project that India remains import dependent, despite increases in non-fossil

fuel production.

 India’s energy production rises by 117% to 2035  India’s energy production as a share of consumption
while consumption grows by 128%. declines from 59% today to 56% by 2035; imports
rise by 143%.
 Oil imports rise by 161% and account for 61% of the
net increase in imports, followed in volumetric terms  Declines in oil (-21%) production are made up by
by increasing imports of coal (+96%) and gas increases in gas (+78%) and coal (+119%).
(+270%).
 Coal remains the dominant fuel produced in India
 Demand for all fossil fuels expands, led by gas with a 66% market share in 2035. Renewables in
(+145%), oil (+117%) and then coal (+112%), while power overtakes oil as the second largest, increasing
renewables expand by 564%, nuclear by 363% and from 3% to 11% in 2035 as oil drops from 12% today
hydro by 98%. to 4% in 2035.

 India’s energy mix evolves very slowly over the next  Energy consumption in power generation more than
22 years with fossil fuels accounting for 87% of doubles (+124%) and while coal remains the
demand in 2035, compared to a global average of dominant fuel source, its market share drops from
81%. This is down from 92% today. Oil remains the 76% today to 72% in 2035.
dominant fuel (36%) followed by gas (30%) and coal
(21%).  Energy in transport grows by 5.1% p.a. and oil

accounting for the second largest share of the BRIC
countries with China at 26%, Russia 5%, and Brazil  By 2035, India’s energy intensity of GDP is 30%
