2. Subject/Skill:

 Math: Monetary value- Count mixed groups of coins including pennies,

3. Objective(s)
 Student will learn to count coins by doing a group activity using fake coin
money.
 Students will need basic adding skills to accomplish this activity.
 Students will get in groups of 5 selected by the teacher and be handed five
bags each containing either pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, or half dollars
along with 5 dice.
 Students will then take turns rolling the dice, after rolling the dice they will
add up the numbers between the two dice. Ex: I roll a 6 and a 2, that’s 8.
 After determining the total number they rolled they will transfer that number
into money value and disperse It to themselves using the coins. It is up to
them if they use all pennies, or a mixture of the coins given to them.
 At the end of the activity students will count all the coins they earned from
rolling the dice and see who collected the most money.

4. Materials

 5 dice
 a scratch piece of paper and pencil to be of assistance to add

5. Grouping Structures
 There will be groups of 5.
 Students will use the classroom floor space
 I will put one of my gifted students in each group, so that if there needs to be
assistance in any way they could be of help.
6. Modifications

 I don’t have many ELL or LD students in my classroom so I will add them in

groups like normal. I will watch and asses as needed if needed.

7. Assessment

 I will assess the students by checking to see if they’re money adding at the
end was correct.
 I will also asses my walking around and observing the students as they do this
learning activity.

 As the end of the activity I will distribute a Homework assignment. This

homework will have pictures of blank coins and a total amount of money.
With this homework assignment I would like the students to fill the inside of
the coins with 1 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 25 cent, or 50 cent until it adds up to the
total amount given.
