read a text and write an effective constructed response as an answer to a prompt. O

Resources or Materials Needed:

 Whiteboard and markers

 Student computers to access internet

 Collaborative Online Word Processor: WriteURL www.writeurl.com

 Summative Assessment with text “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber,

prompt, and rubric for scoring constructed response

Performance Objective 8:

Provided a text and a prompt, students will independently write an effective constructed
response that concludes by unifying multiple pieces of evidence and points of analysis from
the text, scoring six out of six points on the given rubric.
Time: 60 minutes
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: Review of Constructed Response Format

 Teacher shares the objective of the lesson.

 Teacher reviews the purpose for writing constructed responses.

 Teacher reviews parts of the process for constructing responses.

Step 2: Content Presentation: Exemplary Constructed Response

 Teacher shows a self-created or student (with permission) 6-point example.

 Teacher explains why the example is a 6 out of 6.

Step 3: Learner Participation: Summative Assessment

 Learners will participate by completing their summative assessment for the unit.

Step 4: Assessment: Summative: Individual Constructed Response

 Teacher will distribute the assessment.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: Reflection

 Students will write a reflection in their Writer’s Notebooks in response to the

following question: Where will the constructed response format be useful outside of

English class?

 Teacher will grade the summative assessment to see if students have met the

performance objective for this lesson therefore the instructional goal.

 Teacher will evaluate if the skill needs reviewed or addressed again in future units.
