Weekly LOG BOOK - Week # 1

Student Name: Akram Z. Al-Tamimi ID: 200801586

Internship Site: Saudi Aramco, Industrial Training Department (ITD), Dhahran.
Supervisor’s Name: Mr. Abdullah Amoudi
Week Beginning: Saturday, 16th June 2012.
Internship Advisor at College: Dr. Abul Bashar

Day 1, 16-06-2012:

Today I worked with all Coop students. It was the first orientation day held at Aramco
Dammam building. I learned about the history of Aramco, goals and achievements of the
company. Moreover, I learned about the main regulations, signed the acknowledgement
forms, and was directed to which hospital I should report to for my health insurance
coverage. At this stage, all what I learned was about the history and background of the
company, and how to follow the company’s rules and regulations.

Day 2, 17-06-2012:

Today I worked with all Coop students again. It was the second orientation day held
at Aramco Dammam building. I learned more about the history of Aramco, future goals and
planned achievements of the company in the near future. Moreover, I learned about the
main safety measurements and standards, the emergency numbers and context of reporting
an incident, and re-signed a new contract along with IT regulations forms, and was directed
to which department I should report to in order to start practicing my coop program. At this
stage, all what I learned was more about the history and views of the company, and how to
follow the company’s safety rules and regulations.

Day 3, 18-06-2012:

Today, I met my supervisor and he welcomed me in the department and briefed me

about the program they planned for me and told me that there will be some task shifting, and
showed me around the department. Later on, I moved on with one of trainers to the training
department in order to start my training program, where I met my assigned mentor, “a senior
person who I should ask for any needed advice or information”, and my team mates. I
learned today about Fiber Optics. I was shown what types are available, what they are used
for, how they are used and connected, and what applications they are used in, along with
Aramco’s standards in its applications. I was excited to know and learn about fiber optics, as
I’ve never seen it in action before, all information I had up to that point was theoretical only.

Day 4, 19-06-2012:

Today, I continued my fiber optics training, and was taught the safety precautions
measurements, how to work with fiber optics in theory, fiber optics’ machinery and
apparatus, and how to operate them along with their testing devices. Afterwards, I started
my practical training with my team mates, where we applied what we learned as we spliced,
connected and joined fiber optics ends by using the fusion method, with testing the
approximated loss of data margin and compare it with Aramco’s standards. We faced all the
possible obstacles, and we were told that we have handled them professionally and
overcome them by the right methods. Furthermore, I attended the department’s meeting on
the importance of recycling materials and the new plan Aramco is proceeding with within
their departments and housings. Again, I was so excited because I actually worked on fiber
optics as a technician in order to see it more clearly, understand how it was done and come
up with the possible solutions by only reading the results’ charts when I get the reports later
on from field technician as an engineer.

Day 5, 20-06-2012:

Today, I reviewed the safety precautions measurements, how to work with fiber
optics in theory, fiber optics’ machinery and apparatus, and how to operate them along with
their testing devices. Afterwards, I continued my practical training with my team mates,
where we applied what we learned previously, adding to it, some new testing methods and
machinery. Furthermore, I was taught the different types of connectors and their
applications, and was trained how to assemble and fix them to the end of the fiber optic
cables, each for its application and its compatible devices. We faced some connecting
obstacles, and we overcome them by the right methods. Again, I was so excited because I
actually worked on it in order to understand more how does it work and its applications, in an
engineer’s point of view.

1. What have you learned in college that you applied on the internship?

I felt like I was living some of what I was trained on and taught in my courses during
my early sophomore year. I felt that work places use a lot of leadership and team work skills
that are essential in order to be an effective and remarkable member in the group. Moreover,
I found some of the basic information about fiber optics and its applications, which were
taught in courses during my junior year, extremely useful.

2. List any difficulties, mistakes, pleasant or unpleasant experiences that occurred this week. What did
you do to correct your mistake (s)?

The most difficult point was in the two ends join by fusion’s part, where any obstacle
or even a tiny air bubble would lead to a failure in the testing time due to loss of data causing
a job re-do operation. I had a few failures at the beginning, but by the end, my each
operation was flawless and was passing the testing devices even with Aramco’s standards.
It was a great and a pleasant overall experience. I tended to use the trial-and-error method
in order to overcome and solve my mistakes and improve my techniques in operations.

3. On what skill or question could you use help in performing your internship responsibilities better?

I’m not sure if I understood the question right, but from what I see, there are many
important personal and professional skills that are needed in the work place, especially the
ones directly related to the tasks that are assigned to us.

4. What interesting or challenging experience did you have with your fellow workers or site supervisor?
Describe

Thank God, I was lucky with my group, as we got along with each other, understood
each other, and helped each other in any required task that was missed or miss
performed. Moreover, my site supervisor is a patient person, and he tends to share his
knowledge and experience with us in order to benefit from this program the most.
