COMPLEX ENGINEERING PROBLEM

UE-213 PLANNING & DESIGN OF TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS

Term Project
TITLE
To produce geometric design of sample highway project using modern automated tool
OBJECTIVE
Student would be able to

 Create the road alignment and plot the alignment profile using bearings or coordinates (easting
and northing)
 Compute earthwork quantities, and perform numerous other analyses and calculations aimed at
finding the optimum alignment while satisfying design standards and constraints.
 Demonstrate how roadway geometric design can be performed in a very short time with much
ease and precision.
METHODOLGY
All students would be given softcopy topographic drawings and they need to produce geometric design
funder following constraints/ guidelines in Civil 3d such as
-Design speed-75 Kmph
-Super elevation- 5.5%
-Maximum grades-±7%
-Balance cut and fill
-3 lanes in each direction each being 3.65 m wide
-Median-New jersey barrier,1 m high
-Right of way-100 m
-Pavement section
-Asphalt wearing course- 5 cm
- Asphalt binder course- 7.0 cm
-Aggregate base course-18 cm
-Granular sub base course- 30 cm Trapezoidal drain
-Cross slope: -1.5%
Shoulders: 1. 4 m wide - Cross slope:
-2.5% Drainage: Trapezoidal drain as per drawing
DELIVERABLES
The deliverable should consist of two part the report and the drawing
The report should contain

 Surface model –
 Surface detail report
 -Plan at 100 m chainage,
 25 m chainage for curve –
 Horizontal alignment report –
 Profile sheets with band
 Vertical alignment report
 Assembly
 Corridors
 Sections
 Earth work volumes reports -Mass haul diagrams
The drawing should contain

 A minimum of two horizontals curves and two vertical curves

 A map printout with the title block filled in accordingly, according to the best scale for map and
note the scale in the title block.
 All the drawings should be printed on A3/A4 size papers.
 Soft copy should also be provided

ASSESSMENT
 The student would be assessed from the following rubrics
