News From Pastor Peitsch

We are at the beginning of summer. I wanted us to think about and put into better practice the “recreation” during
this time of the year. We need to consider what recreation means in our lives.

Often, we use words without thought of their real meaning. “Recreation” is one of those words. Consider then the
roots of re-creation. The word is derived from the Latin also: re meaning “again” and creare meaning “to bring
forth” or “to begin.” So, our recreation should serve as re-creation – a renewal, a way to have new life.

Re-creation can take on many forms. Re-creation gives balance to both children’s studies and adults’ work. What re-
search finds is that recreation actually enhances both school and job performance.

Most often we think of recreation as a fun, distracting activity for ourselves. But is that what it really is? Is it all
about fun? Is it all about us? Is it all about what we want?

1 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” When we are “in Christ”, we are in
a faith relationship with Him. We trust and believe that He is our Savior, that He has died for our sins, and that be-
cause He has risen from the dead, we also will live again.

That is what we need to hear on a regular basis in order to be “re-created”.

This is not about being a bum nor being a workaholic. Re-creation is about finding balance in life between work and
the activity that helps us re-create and renew. The best activity to assist us in being “re-created” is in the worship
service where we come with our dirty sinful self, cast it upon our Savior in confession and then receive His words of
forgiveness. We leave worship clean and refreshed – a new creation.

That’s what helps to improve our performance in school, at home, and at work. We gather together with other broth-
ers and sisters in Christ to be refreshed, renewed, and re-created through the confession and forgiveness in Jesus
we receive in worship.

Stewardship & Missions Board

June, 2018

Mission of the Month : Sheboygan Area Lutheran High School was started in the fall of 1978. The school building on Taylor Drive
in Sheboygan has had numerous additions to meet the needs of the growing school. They will be celebrating 40 years of ministry
to over 1500 students. This summer there will be reunions and special events to celebrate this milestone. The mission of the
school is “To Prepare Christian Leaders-One Student at a Time”. Another way to support LHS is to donate and shop at the resale
store “Neat Repeats” in Plymouth.

Random Lake/Adell Interfaith Food Pantry: June will be busy month at the pantry as families plan to have their children home all
day from school. If you are looking for a special theme consider donating baby products during the month of June. Thank you
for your ongoing support of this ministry. There is always need for families and adults struggling to make ends meet in our com-
munity.

Fundraisers: The last fundraiser for the school year was the Pizza sale. Volunteers made about 1500 pizzas and the profit from
this event is little over $3700. Thank you to all who made pizzas, sold pizzas and bought pizzas!!

Stewardship & Missions Board Members: With the end of the fiscal year at St. Johns new members join the boards. Continuing
as Chairperson is Karen Pfeifer. New members elected at the May voters meeting are Don Pfeifer and Mardell Schulz. There is
room for more to serve on this board. If interested in learning more about the work of this Board talk with one of the members.

Year Round Stewardship: “Balancing Lives-Being a Steward of Family”. Here are 7 principles that can help make us better disci-
ples.
-Be Thankful for the big things and small. It is easy to take things for granted like complaining about our work or our hectic
schedules. We forget that these are blessings from God.

-Trust God to Provide. For many of us it is easier to trust God for our eternal salvation than it is to trust him for our daily living.

-Be content. We live in a world of obsession with material possessions. As we come to understand that everything belongs to
God, our perspective changes we become more content.

-Be a faithful example. If we are to be good models for our children, we as parents must have God’s Word reflected in our lives.
Take advantage of teachable moments, give the gift of time to our children and others.

-Live within your means. As God’s stewards, our fundamental lifestyle choice is to concentrate on what we have instead of what
we lack. We need to playfully consider our lifestyle and spending habits and how that affects our relationship with God and our
stewardship responsibility.

-Give time and talent. We are called to love as Jesus loves, to serve as Jesus served. This means we have a responsibility to
reflect God’s love in our homes and community.

-Give treasure. Proverbs 3:9, “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops”. Everything we have is a
gift from God. Our giving is an outward expression of a wiling and grateful heart.

LCMS Stewardship Ministry

June 2018: Newsletter Article

By Rev. Jason Braaten

Immanuel Lutheran Church – Tuscola, Ill.

“There are three conversions necessary to every man: the head, the heart, and the purse.” Attributed to Luther,
though yet to be located in his vast writings, this statement echoes what Jesus taught about hearts and treasures.
He said, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21; Luke 12:34).

But which conversion comes first? I submit that the order is this: first the head, then the purse, then the heart. Let
me explain.

Our Lord Jesus Christ dwelt among us to save us. He took on our flesh, fulfilled the demands of the law in our
place, became sin for us, and suffered torture and death on our behalf, in order that we would be free from sin,
death, and hell. He gives us what He accomplished through Baptism, Absolution, and the Lord’s Supper.

And so, He doesn’t just do it for us but gives it to us, makes what He did ours by making us His. Thus, we are
called by His name: Christians. We have a new life in Him.

Through the preaching of Law and Gospel, God grants us repentance, a changing of our minds. It is a conversion
of the mind. We are called to turn away from our sins and turn toward Him for forgiveness, life, and salvation. For
when God calls us away from something, He is, at the same time, calling us to something.

And thus, He calls us to a new life, with new deeds. This is the conversion of the purse. Jesus said that “it is easier
for a camel to enter through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew
19:24). “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Notice that our hearts follow our treasures, not the other way around. As Christians, God calls us to invest our
treasures in His Kingdom to ensure that the gospel is preached and the sacraments are administered. He calls us
to share all good things with the one who teaches us the doctrines of Christ. He calls us to be generous in giving to
the church, for it is more blessed to give than to receive.

So where is your treasure? If it is not invested in the kingdom of God, then the only response is repentance—a
conversion of the heart—and to begin doing just that. And as our Lord promised, where your treasure is there your
heart will be also.

This is not to say that you earn your way into heaven. It is simply to say that as Christians, those who have been
made to be temples of the Holy Spirit, who have been given a new life in Christ, who are dead to sin and now alive
in Him, we are, actually, to live — think (conversion of the mind), do (conversion of the purse), and be (conversion
of the heart) — a new life in Him.

And when you fail, know that God in Christ loves and forgives you and still calls you away from that and to Him-
self.
