HENNEPIN HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION

Hennepin Healthcare Foundation was created in 2009 to raise funds and awareness for
Hennepin Healthcare. The Foundation has its own Board of Directors, staff, by-laws 501(C)3
status and strategic plan.
With 20 staff members, the Foundation has grown donations significantly over the years, to
$22 million in 2017.
HENNEPIN HEALTHCARE
Hennepin Healthcare, formerly known as Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), is a
Level I trauma center and comprehensive healthcare system based in Minneapolis, the
county seat of Hennepin County. The extensive primary facility of 484 beds is located in
downtown Minneapolis, across the street from U.S. Bank Stadium. Hennepin Healthcare
also includes neighborhood clinics in the Minneapolis Whittier neighborhood, East Lake
neighborhood, North Loop neighborhood and the suburban communities of Brooklyn Park,
Golden Valley, St. Anthony Village and Richfield.
Patients come from a broad geographic region to be treated at Hennepin Healthcare

because of the recognized trauma specialists, transplant services, stroke specialists,
advanced endoscopy/hepatobilliary center, brain injury rehabilitation services, and
hyperbaric oxygen chamber.
History
The original hospital was established in 1887 as Minneapolis City Hospital, later called
"General Hospital" or "City Hospital". Ownership was transferred to the county in 1964,
when the entity was renamed Hennepin County General Hospital. By the late 1960s, the
hospital was comprised of a disorganized group of buildings, leading to the decision to clear
and rebuild the facility. The current inpatient hospital facility was completed in 1976 and
renamed Hennepin County Medical Center.
The hospital incorporated the adjacent Metropolitan-Mount Sinai Medical Center facilities in
1991 and gained Level I trauma center status in 1989, the first such site in the state.
The hospital underwent a governance change in January 2007, which created a new
governing entity with greater autonomy from the county government. The public mission of
the hospital did not change, but this transition was made with an eye toward the long-term
viability of the hospital.
In 2012 the hospital partnered with NorthPoint Health and Wellness Center, Metropolitan
Health Plan, and Hennepin County’s Human Services and Public Health Department to form
an accountable care organization called Hennepin Health. By February 2013, Hennepin
Health had enrolled 6,000 clients and today has around 22,000 clients.
In 2015, the Hennepin County Board allocated $192 million for a new outpatient clinic and
specialty care center, right across the street from the emergency department entrance. The
377,000 square foot building opened in March 2018. And, after an exciting re-branding initiative,
Hennepin County Medical Center became Hennepin Healthcare, an identity which better reflects
the organization’s widening array of services.
Hennepin Healthcare has independent residency programs in dentistry, pharmacy practice,

emergency medicine, internal medicine, combined internal medicine/emergency medicine,
family medicine, general surgery, podiatric surgery, and psychiatry. In addition, the
organization is a rotating site for many programs from the University of Minnesota,
including orthopedic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, ophthalmology,
neurosurgery, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, urology and many
medical subspecialty fellowships. It has independent fellowships in geriatrics, critical care
medicine, sleep medicine and nephrology.
Hennepin Healthcare also provides

services for the cities of Minneapolis,
Golden Valley, Shorewood, Eden
Prairie, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, St.
Anthony, Woodland, Excelsior,
Deephaven, Tonka Bay, Richfield, and
the majority of the city of Minnetonka.
Hennepin Healthcare EMS logs over
75,000 911 calls every year from an
urban/suburban population base of
roughly 770,000.
Hennepin Healthcare also has a large psychiatric
program, home care and hospice, and an innovation
group called Upstream Health Innovation. The Hennepin
Healthcare Research Institute (the third largest medical
research nonprofit in Minnesota), makes contributions
to the study and practice of medicine in four focus areas:
Acute Care/Trauma, Addiction, Health Services and
Infectious Diseases (HIV/AIDS).
Hennepin Healthcare’s unique position of being Minnesota’s largest level one trauma
center, safety net and public teaching hospital offers innovative ways to influence the health
of the region.

Hennepin Healthcare Foundation supports the mission and vision of Hennepin Healthcare.
The Foundation completed a three-year strategic plan in 2017, identifying three Strategic

An experienced team of fundraisers, the

working to create a culture of
philanthropy throughout the entire
organization and to introduce the
mission and outcomes of Hennepin
Healthcare to an even wider audience.
The Foundation raised $22 million in 2017 to support four areas of focus:
Patient Care & Comfort: Every gift makes a significant
impact in removing barriers to healthcare access and
providing comfort during times of uncertainty.
Donations allow the Foundation to fund new medical
equipment to enhance patient care, offer yoga classes
for cancer patients, cover co-pays for patient
medications, provide new mothers access to a hotline
for assistance, and provide a book to every newborn and
child through the Children’s Literacy Program.
Community Health: As one of the nation’s first nonprofit, nurse-led,

public health organizations, MVNA has served the health care needs of
the community for more than a century. In 2016, MVNA and Hospice of
the Twin Cities joined with Hennepin Healthcare and now serve as the
community health division. This unit delivers care in shelters, private
homes, schools, child care centers, businesses and community centers
and provides over 20 community-based safety net programs. Some of
these programs are prenatal and birth, chronic disease management,
end of life and bereavement. HHF provides financial assistance to
MVNA.
Medical Education and Training: Education and

training programs have been preparing medical
professionals since 1893. Over half of all
physicians in Minnesota receive training at
Hennepin Healthcare. Contributions have
provided tuition for nutritional support training,
equipment and technology for the
Interdisciplinary Simulation & Education Center,
Paving the Way assistance for employees
interested in pursuing higher education in the
nursing field, portable Megacode Kid manikins for
fire, police and paramedic training, ventilator simulator for the surgery department,
certification of pharmacists in asthma education along with lung models and respiratory
charts.
Medical Research: Since 1952, the Hennepin Healthcare

Research Institute (formerly Minneapolis Medical Research
Foundation) has provided a home where physicians at
Hennepin Healthcare can study diseases they see in their
patients and develop new treatments to improve their care.
Researchers are practicing physicians and medical
professionals. They use their impressive medical
backgrounds to advance medical knowledge and improve
the care their patients receive. Some of the current research projects include ALS, chronic
diseases, dementia and aging, heart disease and heart failure, organ transplantation, trauma
and burn, and traumatic brain injury. Hennepin Healthcare Foundation provides financial
assistance to help fund medical research through the Hennepin Healthcare Research
Institute.

FOUNDATION PROGRAMS
Small Grants
The small grants program was created to support internal initiatives that benefit patients
and staff of Hennepin Healthcare. Grants from $5,000-$25,000 are used to enhance the
patient and family experience, purchase supplies and equipment, or benefit the work of
staff.
Next Steps
The award winning Next Steps program was created in 2016 and works to keep youth and
young adults safe from repeated acts of violence. Over 170 participants were helped after
staff connected with youth admitted for violent trauma. This hospital-based youth violence
intervention partnership is between Hennepin Healthcare and the City of Minneapolis.
Leaders from the Emergency Department, Spiritual Care, Social Services and Security work
with staff from the City of Minneapolis Department of Health, Minneapolis Police
Department and the Office of the Mayor.
TeenHOPE
In 2017, 105 teen parents earned their high school diploma or GED through the TeenHOPE
program. Pregnant and parenting teens are connected with public health case management
services focused on helping them complete their educational goals, deliver healthy babies,
delay subsequent pregnancies, develop responsive parenting skills, and achieve self-
sufficiency.
Pediatric patients of the Hennepin Healthcare Burn Unit recently participated in the inaugural
CampRED summer camp by Firefighters for Healing.

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE
As an organization that is not yet ten years old, the Foundation is growing and its culture is
developing. Staff members describe the culture at Hennepin Healthcare Foundation as
collaborative and cohesive. They speak about mutual respect and a willingness to listen and
consider other ideas. Creativity and innovation are welcomed! Hennepin Healthcare
Foundation staff seek continued evolution as the organization becomes more sophisticated
in its operations…ultimately, their eyes are on the goal of making an even greater
contribution toward the mission. “We are kind to donors, patients, programs and all staff,”
one person said. “We interact with many stakeholders.” It is still a young foundation but

• Continue outreach with flu vaccinations and colorectal cancer
screenings.
• Support the award winning Next Step Program in doing

• Expand membership in the Young Professionals Group and
Hennepin Honorary Alumni.
• Celebrated the Light Up the Night gala --the first event to be
held in the newly renovated Minneapolis Armory, entertaining
900 guests and generating $669,000 in revenue.
• Secured a $1.25M donation to support the positive care center
and how Hennepin Healthcare tends to the aging HIV
population.
• Partnered with Delta Dental to establish the $4.6M Delta Dental
Oral Health Center.
• Secured nearly $7M through the naming of spaces in the new

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION

The President of Hennepin Healthcare Foundation has overall responsibility for the strategic
and tactical operations of the Foundation. The President leads the Foundation and oversees
philanthropic efforts. The President has a staff of talented direct reports overseeing the
development, financial and administrative functions of the foundation. There are 20 full
time staff at Hennepin Healthcare Foundation.
The President has a dual reporting relationship to the Chief Executive Officer of Hennepin
Healthcare AND to the Hennepin Healthcare Foundation board of directors. The Hennepin
Healthcare CEO, Dr. Pryor MD, MBA, joined Hennepin Healthcare in April 2013 after previous
leadership roles in healthcare and academic settings.
Hennepin Healthcare Foundation’s board is made up of an engaged group of community

leaders. Board activities include quarterly full board meetings as well as regular committee
meetings.
This opportunity is available due to the retirement of Ford Bell, DVM. In his three years as
President of Hennepin Healthcare Foundation, Dr. Bell elevated the Foundation to a new
level by growing staff and enhancing community relationships.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead the development of the Foundation’s long-range, strategic, and operational plans;
manage the execution of the plans to ensure that objectives are being achieved
• Oversee the planning, implementing and coordinating of fundraising activities, ie “builds
a playbook”
• Oversee and participate in research to identify resources available through community
foundations, trusts, grant programs, etc., and develop fundraising/solicitation
approaches and campaigns
• Encourage, partner and engage with internal stakeholders and community supporters to
raise funds for Hennepin Healthcare’s programs and services
• Develop, implement, monitor, and revise annual goals and objectives for the Foundation
to support the missions and objectives of Hennepin Healthcare
• Develop and monitor annual budgets that ensure the Foundation has the necessary funds
to carry out its goals and objectives
President
• Work collaboratively and productively with Foundation staff and the Hennepin
Healthcare Foundation Board members; also interact professionally and positively with
Hennepin Healthcare staff and Board
• Maintain positive working relationships with external organizations to increase
community awareness of the related needs of Hennepin Healthcare
• Demonstrate skillful problem solving, decision making, planning and tracking
• Maintain knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that
impact the Foundation. Develop effective internal controls that promote adherence to
applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies
and federal, state, and private health plans
• Stay current with the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the
philanthropic and advancement fields by attending seminars/workshops, reading
professional journals, and actively participating in professional organizations
• Provide executive leadership and oversight for advocacy and community relations
efforts on behalf of Hennepin Healthcare Foundation
• Positively communicate and manage relationships with people of diverse backgrounds
and cultures
• Develop and maintain an equity lens in key relationships including with Board, staff and
all fundraising stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications
• Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
• At least ten years of demonstrated fundraising and major donor development and
solicitation experience
• Five years of staff leadership experience including management level reports

The Twin Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis are a unique blend of small town and major

state capital, is home to state government and has a more historical vibe. Minneapolis is the
larger and more commercial of the two cities. Outside of the central downtowns, however,
both cities have many distinct neighborhoods, and residents identify more with their

According to the website WalletHub, Minneapolis ranks 12th in America for cities with the
most green space. Both cities share a common root of being river towns, and the great
outdoors is a major attraction for residents and visitors alike. In addition to the mighty
Mississippi River, there are more than 900 lakes in the metro area and surrounding suburbs,
upwards of 300 parks, and miles of biking and walking trails.
Nearly every weekend in the summer there are several outdoor events for participants and
spectators—triathlons, biking races, running races, boat races, water skiing competitions,
golf tournaments, and more.
The summer highlight for most Minnesotans is the

Minnesota State Fair. One of the largest of its kind,
ours is a world-class showcase of Minnesota’s best in
agriculture, industry, arts and entertainment. Held on
a 320-acre parcel located between St. Paul and
Minneapolis, it is a self-supported organization and
has been held on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds every year since 1885.

As summer turns to fall, the region puts on a breathtaking autumn show that draws visitors
from miles around. While fall is a fleeting spectacle, the active lifestyle of Minnesotans
doesn't go dormant during the winter either. Being hardy in every way, we take advantage
the miles of cross-country skiing trails, downhill ski areas, ice skating, snowmobiling,
sledding, and, of course, ice fishing.
In recent years Minneapolis and St. Paul have become two of the most diverse cities in
America, with Minnesota's Somali community being one of the largest in the United States. St.
Paul is the heart of Minnesota’s Hmong community as well and is home to the largest urban
concentration of Hmong residents in the country.
It is by design that we’ve embraced such ethnic uniqueness. Our multi-cultural communities

getting to know the world, and coming to understand different cultures, on a more intimate
scale right here at home.
One of the best places to get a taste of our many blended cultures is
Midtown Global Market on Lake Street in Minneapolis. Midtown Global
Market is a welcoming indoor market and meeting place featuring an
abundance of ethnic dishes, gifts and groceries, from Mexican and
Middle Eastern to Vietnamese, Indian, Swedish and Italian.
Many Hmong and Vietnamese restaurants and shops are located in the
Frogtown neighborhood as well, on and around University and Lexington
avenues. Hmongtown Marketplace on Como Avenue and Hmong Village on
Johnson Parkway on St. Paul’s East Side feature a wide variety of traditional
foods, clothing, fabrics and crafts, as well as farmers markets.
There are countless arts and culture offerings in the Twin Cities. The Grammy Award-winning
Minnesota Orchestra has a reputation as one of the top orchestras in the world. The Saint
Paul Chamber Orchestra is also regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the

Since the early 1960s, the Guthrie Theater has staged outstanding shows from the classical to
the modern. Popular national shows and performers also tour through the Twin Cities year-
round at stages in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and at the University of Minnesota.
If you are a theatre-goer in the Twin Cities you’ll never have a dull
moment. According to the Western States Arts Federation,
Minneapolis ranks as the fifth-most “creatively vital” city in the
country, right after D.C., LA, NYC and Boston. We boast more than 40
venues with a variety that even the most seasoned thespian would
notice. There are the magnificent musicals that play on the State,
Orpheum, and Pantages stages and lots of local talent making a
statement on stages such as the Southern Theater, New Century, and
Illusion. Many a Broadway production touch down in Minneapolis on their country-wide
tours. Cats, The Lion King, and A Chorus Line are a few examples of productions that have
played here. Theater is also a large component of life in Saint Paul. The gorgeous 1000-seat
Fitzgerald Theatre acts as MPR’s largest broadcast studio. Staged productions commission
authors, artists and radio hosts to create programming for the public radio community. The
Fitzgerald Theater is St. Paul’s oldest theater and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010.
The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts has been recognized as one of America’s leading
not-for-profit performing arts centers and is home to a wide variety of performances
throughout the year providing the finest in musical theater, music, dance, and vocal artists in its
Music Theater and Concert Hall. In addition, each year the Ordway presents its Flint Hills Family
Festival, serving more than 50,000 children and adults through its Ordway Education programs.
And while we’re on the subject of philanthropy, the Twin Cities is proud to call itself home to
hundreds of nonprofits doing good work for the residents of our community, giving us an
even richer connection to each other.
For the museum-goer, there are more than 60 museums in the

metro area. The Science Museum of Minnesota and the
Minnesota Children's Museum (both in Saint Paul) are highly
interactive learning facilities and fun experiences for the
entire family. The Minnesota History Center is an interactive
museum for all ages with permanent and changing exhibits,
lectures and events.
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts has a collection of more than 100,000 pieces. The Walker
Art Center has been called “possibly the best contemporary art museum in the U. S.” by
Newsweek and has over 11,000 pieces. The University of Minnesota's Weisman Art Museum
is also a contemporary art destination.

The Somali Museum of Minnesota on East Lake Street features hundreds of traditional Somali
artworks and artifacts as well as educational programs.
For those who prefer activity of the spectator variety, the Twin Cities is home to the
Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Wild and the Minnesota Timberwolves. We
are also the home city to the four-time WNBA Champion Minnesota Lynx and the Minnesota
United soccer team. Our sporting events are hosted in some of the best sporting facilities in
the country, including Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins and US Bank Stadium, a
brand new, enclosed stadium where the Minnesota Vikings host their NFL games. Additionally,
the stadium also hosts early season college baseball games of the University of Minnesota
Golden Gophers. A $250 million, 19,400 seat soccer stadium is also in the works in the St. Paul
Midway area for the Minnesota United.
Beyond sports, the great outdoors, entertainment, and culture, perhaps the biggest
attraction for the Twin Cities is the lifestyle. Forbes hailed Saint Paul and Minneapolis as one
of the nation's healthiest cities and USA Today named Saint Paul as North America's “Most
Romantic City.”
The Twin Cities offer award-winning restaurants (several chefs have been regional James
Beard Award winners). In addition to the popular Mall of America, there are plenty of unique
shopping districts in both cities and in the suburbs.
Minneapolis/St. Paul is also proud to have a world-class international airport. In fact, the
Airports Council International named MSP the 2017 Best Airport in North America in its size
category, 25 million to 40 million passengers per year.
