Sweep Frequency Response Analysis Test.
SWEEP FREQUENCY RESPONSE ANALYSIS:
CONCEPT: SFRA is a diagnostic tool, which detects any mechanical deformation in winding as well
as in core arising from transportation/ relocation & system faults/ short circuits/ surge while in
service. It is also used for Quality assurance of winding & core.
It indicates hoop buckling, shorted turn, Core fault, axial collapse, multiple grounding failures.
It avoids internal inspection of the transformer and consequently expose of transformer to air.
FUNDAMENTAL: Transformer is a complex network of RLC components. Copper winding acts a
resistance. Winding coil acts as inductance. Insulation layers between coils,
windings, between core and windings, between core and tank, etc., act as
capacitance. Any physical damage to the transformer results in the changes in RLC
network. The any RLC network has typical response against variable frequency i.e.
from low frequency to high frequency. This fundamental is used to predict any
change in mechanical integrity of transformer.
MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES: The Seep Frequency Response analysis test involves measuring the
frequency response of each individual winding. It is measured by injecting a sine wave signal with
respect to earth at one end of winding to be tested and measuring the signal amplitudes at the
other end of the winding. The attenuation i.e. in DB, of the transmitted signal relative to reference
signal at the input terminal is measured over a frequency range from 20 Hz to 2 MHz.
Test Sequence:
The SFRA analysis provided in this report was done on a phase to phase comparison. To provide
the best possible analysis the scans are compared by frequency range. This analysis considers
the data from this transformer and primary focus of this report is on the basis of phase to phase
comparisons.
Swept Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA) testing was conducted on this unit, and following
scans were obtained. They are as follows:
1) High Voltage Windings @ tap 1, tap 9B & tap 17
2) Low Voltage Windings
3) Short Circuit (Low Voltage side windings properly shorted)
The frequency range of the scan is 20Hz to 2MHz, and all scans are included in this report.
The three phases are compared against each other, looking for differences in resonant
frequencies. Various interpretations are given to any differences. Listed below are three of the
considerations relating to the test method:
1. As with the excitation current measurements, the outer phases (windings on outer limb
of the core) of the HV and LV winding scans generally have some differences compared
to the center phase at frequencies below 5 kHz. This is due to the different core flux
paths.
2. Grounding and cable schemes can slightly affect the results above 1 MHz depending on
symmetry. If for instance the 1U terminal is much closer to the neutral terminal than
1W, then the results may vary slightly above 1 MHz
3. The internal connection leads within the transformer can vary in length and position
from phase to phase. These differences can cause slight variations at frequencies greater
than 750 kHz. These variations should only occur when comparing phases however and
the results should not change from one test date to another test date.
