BE A DISCIPLE

Lesson 01:
THE DISCIPLE LIFE – A CALL

THE DISCIPLE LIFE: A CALL OF JESUS HIMSELF

It is Jesus Himself who calls one to be His disciple, His follower. This is the greatest calling
that a human can have. It is a lifelong covenant with our Lord and Master, to follow Him on
the way of life, wherever it might lead. Through trials and testing, to eternal glory and
fellowship with Him. But He said, it is a life that leads to more abundant and eternal life.
Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
Luke 5:27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his
tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him,
John 1:38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They
said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
John 1:43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him,
“Follow me.”
THE DISCIPLE LIFE: A DECISION EACH SHOULD MAKE
Each should decide to come to the starting point in following Jesus. A disciple is a learner, a
student. One has to enroll in order to be a student in a school.
Luke 9:59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and
bury my father.”
Luke 9:61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye
to my family.”
Luke 18:22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you
have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
John 21:19,22 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God.
Then he said to him, “Follow me!”…Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I
return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
THE DISCIPLE LIFE: TO BE LIKE JESUS
The life of a disciple is a life in constant development and growth to become like the Master.
By following Him and learning from Him, Jesus’ disciples will come to the same life that He
has. What is the primary character of Jesus that a disciple will eventually be like?
Jesus did not sin even once, despite being tempted in all things as we are. He only do what is
good. Just imagine that we can learn from Jesus, the Master, to do all that is good! We can
become more and more free from our lusts and sinful nature. As a disciple, you commit to
obeying all of God’s will, then He commits Himself to help you. He will equip you with
everything that pertains to life and godliness and will write His laws in your heart and mind
2 Peter 1:3-4 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our
knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us
his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine
nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. This is the covenant I
will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord.
Hebrews 8:10 I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God and they will be my people.
