JULY 2018 DESIG-NAA 5

b
ased in Dhaka, ‘Shoilee’ is more of a jew-
ellery studio and boutique house where
the owner of the studio Tahmina Shaily and
her team let their creative energies flow and
take shape into new design ideas.

Creative entrepreneur Tahmina Shaily, in a recent inter-

view, told us about her dreams and plans for ‘Shoilee’.

Excerpts of her interview are as follows:

When did you start ‘Shoilee’?

It began in 2006. Our company was internet based at
the time. After a while, we thought a store might help
us to export our products abroad. So, we made trade
license and met other formalities to run an outlet. Thus
was created the jewellery brand ‘Shoilee’.

Tell us about the office and overall?

We call it ‘studio’ in fact. We create exclusive designs
with unique shape and dimensions. I am not saying they
are extraordinarily uncommon. They are, however, not
very usual designs one can find everywhere. Actually,
we try to create our products intricately crafted and
exquisitely designed.

We keep the store open seven days a week for cus-

tomers. It’s a treat to the eyes to see them coming and
buying various products of their choices.
We let out customers hold a product or try it on.
‘Shoilee’ might be the only store where one can try
Jewelleries before purchasing.

And what’s your plan to reach global cus-

tomers?

JULY 2018 DESIG-NAA 7

There are a number of boutique houses in
our country who work very well. There are
many designers who create some really
beautiful designs.

Why another one? What makes ‘Shoilee’

different from others? I started researching
on who could be our possible customers,
which design could they possibly like and
so on.

I used to work as a journalist earlier. I have

worked as an interviewer for a long time.
When I was started the business, I had to
quit as it was not possible to manage time
for both.

In ‘Shoilee’ we work as a team. Everyone

works here has their family. There are
interns, who are mostly students or fresh
graduates. I can feel what these jobs in
‘Shoilee’ mean to them. So I must be very
serious about it.

‘Shoile’ is not a mere business. I must be

disciplined to run it successfully providing
my employees a joyful work environment.

Who are the designers in Shoilee?

All are done by me. There are no other
designers.

Where these ideas come from?

Are they any theme-based?
All our products are single items. Usually
we do not make combo sets like neckpiece
paired with earrings or bangles.

I do believe, every art or design is like

human being. At the end of the day we are
alone. We may have family and friends but
it’s we who complete the journey of our
own. So does an ornament piece.

If a single piece of ornament cannot be one

in a hundred, it cannot be called ‘unique’.
Even a pair of earring can give one a com-
plete look perfectly.

I may sound a little philosophical, but it’s

true.

However, we try to make jewellery that

will best suit in every particular season.
We also give importance to contemporary
trends and customers’ choices.

Sometimes, I have the opportunity to have

What are the other products in ‘Shoilee’?
Besides jewelleries, we are representing traditional handicraft products in ‘Shoilee’. That is not our core product though.

We collect those products from root level producers giving them a chance to keep their products for a year in our show-
room. We sell the product and share profit with them.

There are various products such as handloom embroidered sari, handmade diaries and jewellery boxes. There are many
different types of dolls.

We also make potteries and clay bells. Actually, these products are made in a limited edition.

What about the prices of these items?

Well, the price varies from item to item. For instance, the price of clay dolls starts from Tk 20.

Actually, we don’t sell these products for profit. We showcase them to keep our cultural heritage booming. As a Bangla-
deshi citizen, it’s my duty to make my cultural heritage flourish.

Our core products are jewellery and clothing that earn enough profit for ‘Shoilee’.

Where do you see ‘Shoilee’ in future?
It is a difficult que stion for me.
See, it is the quality of products that matters to me. I never cared about the size of my business or the number of franchises.

At the end of the day, the big ‘wow’ of the customer makes me happy.

I just want to carry on the legacy of my products’ quality.

We have received enormous love and attachment from our customers from the very beginning. They keep coming to our shop
on regular basis.
I cannot think of them to lose their faith in ‘Shoilee’. It was never the numbers -- 10 outlets, 20 outlets—for me. I wanted to
establish ‘Shoilee’ as a brand that people look for.

I often dream of ‘Shoilee’ being the brand where people come to buy jewelleries and promote it globally as one of the best
designers in Bangladesh.

JULY 2018 DESIG-NAA 17

Is there any ‘motto’?
Yes, It says, “Be bold and beautiful’. The motto
inspires us to create our designs.

I believe anything from our daily life, our

moves, the way one walks, anyone’s smile or
anything can motivate a design.
In fact, this attitude and behaviours also work
as one’s jewellery that she wears naturally. We
try to bring people into one place where they
can be together.

We believe, when people become confident,

a city becomes confident itself and so does a
country.
I said ‘she’ because 99.9% of my designs are
for women. Most of our workers are even
women.
I really want girls to be solvent and confident.
I feel, a girl can do any type of job and
overcome any situation. ‘Shoilee’ just tries to
trigger the leader inside any girl.

Last but not the least; our products are created

in a way so that they never outshine the person
who wears them.

The jewelleries and clothing made by ‘Shoilee’

are to make the wearer bold, beautiful and
confident.

WALLS
in
design

A
wall of any house is an essential structure that provides shelter or security to its residents. A big wall,
be it interior or exterior, can be the perfect canvas for creative décor. So, with a little creativity and art-
istry, one can make a boring wall unique and aesthetic. The main purpose of this article is to introduce
the readers to different types of wall and its material.

First, we can divide Wall into two parts, exterior wall and interior wall. Exterior wall protects us from
the sun and rain, provides security and ensures our privacy. Then again, the interior one is the wall

inside of a house. It also divides greater space into smaller rooms. Wall can be made in many ways and with different
materials. It is a joint effort by an architect and an interior designer to make a wall stunning in terms of looks and
durability.

Brick Wall:

A brick wall is a wall made of

bricks. Brick walls date back at least
five thousand years ago in the Indi-
an subcontinent area. This ancient
crafts of making a wall with bricks
and cement mortar completes when
the plaster is done on the briquette.
Exterior wall is usually 10 inches
wide while the width of interior
wall is 5 inches. The advantage of
a brick wall is, its colour can be
changed anytime or it can be rebuilt
easily.

However, a brick wall may be humid

or damaged by water flow. Making
a brick wall takes longer than other

walls. During the construction of the wall, certain things are to be taken care of, such as the wall should be built straight and
it should be covered with plasters smoothly.

Exposed brick Wall:

The exposed brick wall means the kind of wall that is made of ‘special’ bricks and left un-plastered allowing the brickwork
to show.

This kind of wall has a unique charm for creating a vintage accent wall and many people are attracted to its great visual
interest that it generates.

Concrete wall:

Concrete wall is made with concrete, a composite material composed of cement, sand, bricks, and stones with water.
Concrete Wall is an eclectic one that is quite strong. It even looks perfect without plaster. The advantage of the concrete

wall is it helps to keep the room
temperature cool. It is stronger
than brick wall that can protect the
building from earthquake.

Fair-faced Concrete Wall:

having special textures. This wall
is not painted usually. Its aim is to
achieve immaculate and aesthetic
appearance.

Stonewall:

Stonewalls date back to the era

when brick, sand, and cement were
not discovered. Although, stone-

walls are not very popular at present, it can be used sharply for beauty enhancement. Exposed stone wall can be used for
interior and boundary wall. Stone wall is a strong one with attractive visual appearance. Another advantage of Stonewall is
that it is waterproof.

Glass wall:

Glass wall can be used

for both exterior and
interior cases. Exterior
walls with steel frame
and glass are very
common these days.
By using lamination
of different shades, its
colour can be changed
easily. Glass walls of
the high-rise build-
ings are also used for
advertising. The ad-
vantage of glass walls
is its easy and quick
installation.

26 DESIG-NAA JULY 2018

Glass walls can be used as an interior partition to make a soundproof room. Before installing of a glass wall, the heat gain
properties of a particular glass should be studied well so that it does not affect the room temperature. However, glass wall
is an expensive material for exterior wall.

JULY 2018 DESIG-NAA 27

Board Wall:

The much used Wall in interior designing is board wall. It is easy to

create a board wall for an internal partition by using particle board
and plywood. Various types of boards of 8 feet by 4 feet modular
sizes are available in markets. The wall becomes stronger when a
wooden grid frame is installed between two boards.

28 DESIG-NAA JULY 2018

Typically plastic paint is used on board walls. The drawback of board wall is, it may bend if the quality of the board is not
good. Also, the board-wall is not soundproof.

Soundproof Wall:

There are various types of soundproof wall-blocks available in the market. Any type of wall can be made soundproof by
installing such blocks. These blocks, however, are very expensive. A soundproof wall is generally used at studios, meeting
rooms, conference halls and in many other places.

The usage of colour on the wall is very

important. Different types of colours are
available in the market including enamel
paint, plastic paint and weather coat.
The names of colours may vary as per
different companies.

Generally, we use plastic paint on the

inner wall of the house. Plastic paints are
neither glossy nor rustic while Enamel
paint is washable and is a bit glossy.
Weather coat colour is used for the exterior
wall as it protects the walls from rain and
sun.

ARCHITECT

Immensely dense population, unplanned
urbanization, unsorted commercial and
industrial buildings are the major prob-
lems of Dhaka city. Existing houses, resi-
dential and commercial areas, amusement
parks and other structures are mostly
built in an unplanned way in the city.

What if the city was designed by an expert

from the beginning? The first thing that
comes to our mind is a city with no pol-
lution, no dirt, no traffic congestion and
no noise. A planned city where children
are going to school safely, workers are
reaching their office on time; no honking
cars around the hospital.

Above discussion is enough to validate

the title of this article.
What do we know about an architect? A
person with a Bachelor’s Degree in Ar-
chitecture? In many countries around the
world, having an academic certificate is
not good enough for being an architect.
One must be a registered member of the
architect’s institute or organisation of the
respective country.

Let us jump into narrating the importance

of an architect. An architect must have a
degree in Architecture. The duration of
the course must be of five years.
In these five years of study, the archi-
tects have to learn to build a structure
by keeping every detail in their mind.
Every detail means, everything about the
structure – designing, cost estimation,
following building code, total time for
construction and assessing the durability
of the building. It is easy to understand
how it may result if a building is not made
following these methods and rules.T hat is
why, architectural science is very import-
ant for building any structure.
Now let’s have walk into the world of an
architectural structure.

Let’s think, our imaginary structure is lo-

cated in a residential area of the country.

The drawing room is located in a neutral position- nei-
ther too dark nor too bright- with enough circulation of
air.

At the first floor of the building there is a hall that can

accommodate around 25 families at a time. There is a
library, a playing space for children and a tea space for
adults.

Forget about the building now. Let’s enter into a

planned city.

Mr Rahim has to take his two grandchildren Nusrat and

Nujhat to school. Nusrat’s school is located in the resi-
dential area while Nujhat’s school is located 10 kilome-
ters away from the area.

Mr Rahim does not have to worry as he and his grandchildren can use the bus service of the area. He can easily drop Nusrat
at her school and go to nearby metro rail station by rickshaw with Nujhat. He reaches metro rail station by using rickshaw lane
and get on the metro train. He drops Nujhat at her school within 10 minutes.

Now let’s go back to the reality. An architect mainly designs structures ranging from residential buildings, commercial build-
ings to shopping malls, and bridges.

If anyone goes to an architect he wants to
know the client’s requirements, budget and
vision. After meeting relevant queries, he
starts working on his own. His experience in

role.

He may initially draw some sketches and

choose some sketches among those to use
them. He may build some abstract models
with paper. Thus he will reach some deci-
sions gradually and will draw more detailed
sketches. Thereafter, he will start the main
design.

In this process he will proceed following the

budget of the client. Some architect make 3D

Well, I took over my father’s business
in 2010. He started it 23 years ago.
It was just a decor company at the As I said, it was our family business. What services do you and your

Do you organise any other
events apart from wedding?

Yes we do. Besides wedding we or-

ganise corporate events. We provide
our services to a number of corporate
offices and foreign companies.
Also, we arrange events for govern-
ment departments. Those government
events are mostly various types of
annual programmes.

We are expanding our business area

and planning to arrange other social
events such as birthday parties and
naming ceremonies.

Please tell us how do you set

the prices for various events?
Actually, it depends on the clients.
The clients tell us their requirements
and we arrange it accordingly.
See, a stage can be built at Tk 5 mil-
lion and also at only Tk 20,000 at the
same time. It entirely depends on the
props used for building the stage.
We offer packages of different price
ranges according to clients’ choices.

When is the peak season for
events?
It starts from the first Week of
December and continues till mid-
March.

Who designs for you?

My younger brother, who is a com-
puter engineer, makes the designs
usually. We sit with our clients
before any event and share our ideas
with them. Thus we try to under-
stand our clients’ taste. We recom-
mend them a list of possible designs
at the time. We also show them
pictures of designs.

We shortlist some pictures and give

them to the clients. They then make
the final selection of the design for
their desired event.

What are the scopes
for event planning in
our country?
I think there are many
opportunities for event
planning in our country.
If one can present some-
thing with artistry and
creativity, it will definitely
attract people.

In Europe and America,

the wedding ceremonies
are generally very simple
in terms of celebrations.
I have a restaurant in
France. We arrange wed-
ding parties there. One
can hardly find more than
30 guests at such parties.
The picture is, however,
different in this region. In-

have their big-fat wedding
parties.

Even, the middle-class fam-

ilies also arrange dazzling
events according to their
budgets.

What is your future

plan?
Our main concern for now
is to improve segment-wise
services. Sometimes we
collect materials and props
from China, Thailand, and
India. We are very sincere at
our work. Our main motto is
to reach larger cities including
maximum number of districts
across the country. We have
well organised team for every
different section. For instance,
some groups work on our
stage decoration while the
cork sheet team do their part
of works. We have 2-3 perma-
nent workers while others are
hired on temporary basis. We
have to hire 100 to 200 work-
ers for a bigger event.
