Introduction
Diverless intervention is the act of undertaking unmanned operations on subsea
equipment. It can be:
 Planned
 Contingency
 Emergency

Compared to conventional diving operations it provides the advantages of

increased safety, reduced cost, task repeatability and unrestricted depth.

There now exists a wide variety of remote tooling for use on new field
developments as well as existing facilities.

In general, visual feedback is critical to tooling operations.

Intervention Methods
ROV’s are essentially configured in three ways for performing intervention:
 With Manipulators
 With Tool Deployment Units
 With Tool skids or Frames
Intervention is also performed by Remotely Operated Tools (ROT’s):
 The ROT is Normally Deployed by Lift Wire or Umbilical
 Lateral Guidance by Guidewires, Dedicated Thrusters or ROV
 Used for Tasks That Require High Surface Lift Capacity
Remote Intervention Tooling
Remote Tooling is currently available to perform a wide range of work. systems
including:
 Diverless Connection Systems
 Diverless Pipeline Repair Systems
 Component Replacement Systems
 Diverless Pig Launcher / Receiver Systems
 Remote Manifold Valve Operation Systems (MAC Manifold)
 Remote Well Fluid Sampling
 Tool Deployment Systems
 Standard Tooling and Interfaces
Current Design Standards for Remote Tooling are API 17D and API 17H
(Standard ISO 13628-8).

Equipment Vendors & Interfaces
Subsea trees, manifolds, PLEMs:
 Standardise on intervention philosophy
 Full diver or diverless (Remote)
 API 17D or H (Consider others in region)
 Careful consideration of connection systems (rigid or flexible plus
umbilicals)
 Ensure all subsystems are considered
 System integration testing (operability and access)
 Reversible procedures
 Repair
 Abandonment (full life of field considerations)

Ensure tight management of interfaces

 Vendor compatibility and responsibility

Key Application Factors
 Remote systems are applicable across all depths:
 Front end / preparatory engineering required
 Can be cost effective at shallower water depths (less than 50msw)
 All tasks can be performed by ROV
Preparation required – including emergency intervention
 Environmental conditions
 Experienced crews and fit for purpose equipment
 Interface management
 System integration testing
 Companies aligned sharing common operating philosophy
 If diverless philosophy - early involvement of experienced remote systems
company
 A complete systems approach is essential (Capex and Opex)
