The study intends to assess the effectiveness of the alternative general

formula in finding the volume of regular polygon-based pyramids excluding

triangular pyramid. The alternative general formula was derived through the

Cosine Law, the formula for the area of a triangle, and the original general

formula of the volume of pyramids itself. In conducting the study, the researchers

used the Quasi-Experimental Design.

The subjects of the study were the Grade 12 Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students of Surigao del Sur State

University (SDSSU) – Main Campus and STEM from Gamut National High

School (GNHS), control and experimental group, respectively. In the control

group, the formula used was the conventional one, while in the experimental

group is the alternative formula.

The subjects of the study were chosen by the researchers with the use of

random sampling, in which every potential sample that could be chosen has a

predetermined probability of being selected. The researchers utilized a valid and

reliable researchers’ modified twenty-item problem-solving test questionnaire in

determining the efficacy of the alternative general formula over the original

general formula.
A pretest was first conducted, and the result showed that the two groups

of subjects were comparable and almost similar when talking about their mental

ability. It was then followed by a discussion and a posttest with the same set of

questions used in the pretest.

After determining the pretest and posttest mean scores of the students,

and afterwards applying the Paired T-test for solving, the researchers concluded

that the alternative general formula in finding the volume of regular polygon-

based pyramids excluding triangular pyramid is effective, which means that there

is no significant difference on the pretest between the two groups of respondents

but there is a significant difference when it comes to their posttest. It further

indicates that the mathematical achievement and mastery of the students in the

specific topic increased.
