ABSTRACT

Archaeology as a discipline, in its understanding of human historic and pre-historic past

through material remains that has survived over time, requires careful observation,

collection, classification, description, and analysis of materials that result from human

activities and his environmental interaction. It is a consciousness raising discipline

interested in studying change. And in these Change lies development processed through

time.

This project aims at encouraging undergraduates to think differently as to how to bridge

the gap between the past and the present rather than repetition of same projects done

10years ago in the same way. Suffice to say that if students after 4years has not fully

grasp the understanding of the discipline to be able to impact the society with something

distinct, then, it is a GREAT SHAME! My approach to this research entails the

application of my knowledge of statistics as a tool to solving archaeological problem (i.e.

bridging the gap between the past and the present). As a result, one of the objectives to

how well spread undergraduate projects has been over the years with respect to its

geographical location (Co-ordinates) and their categories (Type of Project). In doing this,

I carefully selected, organized, summarized, presented, analysed and interpreted data of

all undergraduate projects ranging from the year 2000-2007 as it is required for scientific

discipline, and bearing in mind that this year is very significant to an extent that it serves

x
as an intermediary between the relatively Older projects (before the year 2000) and the

relatively new projects (2008 till date).

The University of Ibadan is the first university where the department was first established

in Nigeria. It is believed to have been as a result of some cultural entities discovered in

places such as Nok Valley, Ife, Igbo-Ukwu, as well as other places. Hence, in line with

the aim of this research, it is to examine how projects through its impact can better

contribute to the development of the nation and as well promote the awareness of

archaeology as a discipline. In other words, Every Scholar (Ph.D. and Post graduates

inclusive) are all going to benefit from these project as it helps them to understand the

geographical framework of research areas where archaeological studies has been carried

out so far.

However, it is important to note that there are factors that could hamper students from

going the extra mile to give their best as they prepare to conclude their studies as an

undergraduate and even restrict them from going outside the confine of the South West

region of Nigeria as will be later seen from the result of the data analysis in Chapter Four.

Some of such factors: Time Factor, Financial limitations, Insecurity, and attitude of some

supervisors concern at all towards the students (Although we understand how very busy

they can be many times and saddled with lots of responsibilities within a short) and other

factors just to mention but a few. One very key factor that cannot be ruled out is laziness

on the part of the students.

xi
Although the research project seems like a small-scale project of limited scope, it

however, offers the undergraduate student viewpoint as a counterpart to the dominance of

the academic’s perspective and the focus on postgraduate level research.

CHAPTER ONE gives a general overview about topic and detailed information about the

location where the study research is carried out. It contains a brief introduction of the

topic, a brief introduction on the subject, the geographical description the institution,

brief history of the department of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Ibadan,

and the aim and objectives of the study research.

CHAPTER TWO provides a theoretical framework of the study research through review

of some literatures. This chapter also includes methods employed to achieve the aim and

objectives of the research work and the analysis of the map showing the geographical all

the projects within the range of the period of the study research.

CHAPTER THREE consists majorly the catalogue of 242 projects and maps to indicate

their geographical position. The projects are arranged by years.

CHAPTER FOUR contains the Analysis and interpretation of the data collected. Analysis

of the data is represented in a tabular and graphical form, while interpretation of each

representation for each year and summary for all the years all together.

CHAPTER FIVE contains the Discussion & Summary of the result, Conclusion and

Recommendation.
