FROM THE DEAN

Welcome to the Faculty of Business and Information


Technology (FBIT) at the University of Ontario Institute of
Technology (UOIT) where we offer stimulating, innovative,
market-driven programs that will prepare you for an exciting
and successful career in a broad range of fields in business,
information technology or both.

Our Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) program is designed


to enhance your understanding of key business functions
and systems technologies. As a student you can select a
major in Accounting, E-commerce, Finance or Marketing or
choose the Human Resources Management concentration.
If you are interested in accounting, we offer courses that
will enable you to meet the chartered accountant (CA),
certified management accountant (CMA) or certified general
accountant (CGA) designations.

Within our Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours)


program, you can choose Game Development and Entre-
preneurship or Networking and Information Technology (IT)
Security specializations as a foundation for your future 3
career. As a designated Cisco Networking Academy, UOIT
is proud to offer you the opportunity to develop the skills
you need to complete your Cisco certification.

Following successful completion of all third-year require-


ments, you may be able to participate in a contracted
learning partnership with leading businesses through our
internship program. This program is designed to provide you
with the opportunity to apply your skills to the challenges
of business life and gain valuable practical experience
while also helping you develop networking and lifelong
career success. We also offer Canada’s first-of-its-kind
Master of IT Security degree program and in September
2009, UOIT also launched a Master of Business
Administration degree program.

If you have completed a two- or three-year Computer Systems
Technology diploma program or related programs at an Ontario
community college you will be considered for admission to
UOIT’s Information Technology Bridge program and may be
eligible to receive up to 45 transfer credits.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Internship opportunities are available to you after completing


all courses in your program up to and including third year.
Obtaining internship placements is competitive and you
must have a minimum B+ average or cumulative 3.3 GPA
to be eligible.

Internship placements equate to 560 hours of progressive


experience on a full- or part-time basis. Successful work
placement completion and final report submission result in
both a grade and three credits toward your program’s degree
requirements.

This program offers you the opportunity to engage in a


contracted learning partnership with businesses in Durham
Region and around the globe. You are given the opportunity
to apply classroom concepts to the challenges of organiza-
tional life and gain valuable, relevant work experience to

CUTTING-EDGE CLASSROOMS
NETWORKING LAB
The FBIT Networking lab was built to support the Cisco
Networking Academy curriculum, which uses advanced
networking equipment to teach concepts ranging from
fundamental networking skills up to enterprise level network
engineering. Some of the devices in the lab include Cisco
2800 and 2900 ISR routers, Cisco 2500 and 2600 branch
routers, Cisco Catalyst 2960 and 3560 switches with PoE,
Cisco lightweight wireless access points and WLAN controllers,
Cisco IP phones, ADTRAN WAN/PSTN simulators, as well
as a variety of hardware and software to support the latest
networking technologies.

HACKER RESEARCH LAB


12 This dedicated space is a network-equipped lab that houses
devices such as servers, firewalls, and routers. Faculty
members conduct a variety of IT security research projects,
including network intrusion prevention, detection, and reaction,
mitigation of denial-of-service (DoS) and distributed DoS
attacks, interconnection protocols, security and privacy,
services computing, business process integration, and
electronic negotiation and agreement

The lab has 24 host computers which consist of dedicated


servers, workstations, laptops as well as handheld devices
running under a number of platforms. Planned enhancements
to the lab include the incorporation of a variety of network
connectivity, such as CAT5e, wireless (802.11x) and Bluetooth.

MARKETING LAB
Established in 2009, the Marketing lab enables students to
not only learn the concepts of marketing during lectures but
they can also apply what they have learned in using the
technology available in the lab. This enhances their learning
experience and equips them to integrate technology in their
future marketing endeavours. Simply put, our graduates are
better prepared for the job market.

Students learn to observe focus groups and participate in


various experiments. In addition, biometric equipment is
installed for students to observe head and eye movements
in specialized marketing projects including web browsing

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE
GAMING LAB
As part of the Game Development and Entrepreneurship
program, a lab dedicated to the study and development of
games and game technology has been developed. The Gaming
lab consists of 30 state-of-the art workstations, a full-body
motion capture system and a laser scanner. A passive stereo
virtual reality display utilizes the motion-capture system as a
body tracker and gesture-based input device. This enables
the exploration of new input methodologies, full-body gesture
recognition and multi-player collaboration. An audiometric room
coupled with audio recording equipment enables students to
record sound for voice-overs and music with minimal echo or
background noise.

HEALTH INFORMATICS LABORATORY 13


In support of the field of Information Science, students will
have access to the newly established Health Informatics lab.
This lab supports fundamental and applied research within
the health informatics domain, with a focus on its ability to
simulate current and proposed next generation functions
within Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and specifically Neonatal
ICUs (NICUs). No similar innovative advanced prototyping
and simulation environment to support next generation health
informatics solutions exists in the world.

The Health Informatics lab contains three medical devices


used within ICUs together with a range of small fanless PCs,
laptop PCs, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and computer
servers. The small fanless PCs, laptop PCs and PDAs will
simulate functions relating to data collection units, NICU
control stations, specialist workstations, remote access
specialist workstations and/or the referral control centre. The
environment will be configured to enable the simulation of a
range of scenarios incorporating ICUs, remote hospitals, a
referral control centre together with specialist remote access.

STUDENT LIFE
SUMMER STUDY ABROAD
The Faculty of Business and Information Technology, in
conjunction with the Chinese University of Hong Kong
(CUHK), offers students the opportunity to participate in the
Summer Study Abroad Program.

Participating students can enroll in a 4-week summer course


offered on campus at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
In addition, students have the option of also enrolling in
UOIT courses while in Hong Kong (students can take up to
a maximum of 3 courses in total during this program).

ONTARIO GLOBAL EDGE PROGRAM


The Ontario Global Edge program gives students a first-hand
14 opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship and the role of
small and medium-sized businesses in a global economy.

The Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade


provides grants to selected publicly-funded postsecondary
institutions to deliver the program. Eligible students between
the age of 19 and 29 are supported by participating
institutions, allowing them to gain international experience
and develop entrepreneurship skills to effectively engage in
the global marketplace.

UOIT is one of nine post-secondary institutions approved to


deliver the Ontario Global Edge Program. Upon acceptance
into the program, students will be provided with financial
support for an eight-week work placement outside of Canada.
The university co-ordinates all travel arrangements and
accommodations for participants.

FBIT has seven student clubs that have been formally
recognized by the dean:

All clubs are guided by faculty members within the respective


area. All clubs utilize institutional web space and adhere to
all governing institutional policies around that technology.

STUDENT COMPETITIONS
FBIT encourages students to get involved in academic life.
Participation in academic competitions is an enriching 15
opportunity that enables students to develop an active
social life, gain credible experience, widen their network of
personal and professional contacts and put into practice
the theories learned in class.

FBIT is very proud of its students who have recently competed


in various inter-university competitions:

A team of FBIT students won high praise following an impres-


sive result at the 2010 Schulich School of Business accounting
competition in Toronto. Our students took second-place honours
in the competition. Among the organizations attending this
competition were: Ernst & Young, KPMG, Deloitte, Price-
waterhouse Coopers and the Institute of Chartered
Accountants of Ontario.

In addition, FBIT Finance students participated in the Rotman


International Trading Competition (RITC) – an annual event
held in the heart of Canada's financial district, in downtown
Toronto. The event brings teams of students and faculty from
universities worldwide to participate in a unique three-day
conference.

UOIT expects students applying for admission to undergraduate Faculty of Business and Information Technology programs to
present at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) (or equivalent) with a minimum of six 4U or 4M credits,
including:

The specific average or standing required for admission varies from year-to-year. Student selection is determined through
consideration of a wide range of criteria including school marks, distribution of subjects taken and performance in subjects
relevant to the academic program. Possession of minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Preference will be
given to applicants with the best qualifications.

HOW TO APPLY
Apply for all UOIT programs through the Ontario
Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) at www.ouac.on.ca.
You can apply up to a maximum of three programs at UOIT
for a base application fee of $115 for Ontario high school
students. The application deadline is Wednesday, January
12, 2011 for Ontario secondary students, while the deadline
for non-Ontario secondary students and all required admis-
sions documentation is Friday, April 29, 2011.

program, class of 2010) turned their
internship into an opportunity to work
on a game spawned by one of the most
commercially successful movies of all time,
Avatar. Hill and Tawadrous are listed in
the credits of James Cameron's Avatar: The
Game, developed by Ubisoft. Both worked
at Ubisoft Montreal on the game which was
released in December 2009.
