ABSTRACT
West Java is an area found in volcanic complexes with superimposed volcanisms phenomena, where
older volcanoes overlapped with younger volcanoes, due to the subduction of the Quarter Indian-
Australian plate in the south of Java Island. This is causes the volcanic products produced from the
volcanic arc, such as lava Mount Pangradinan which located in the east part of the Bandung Basin is very
interesting to be studied. The purpose of this research is to get the petrology and geochemistry from lava
Mount Pangradinan to know petrogenesis from the lava. The method used is petrographic analysis and
geochemistry of major elements using XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry). Pangradinan lava flow
unit is located in Hummock Mandalawangi unit which is divided into two Crown units, which are Crown
Pangradinan and Crown Mandalawangi composed by lithology of lava with sheeting joint structure.
Petrographic data show that the lava in the study area is included in the quartz latite rock type,
characterized by a special texture of trachytic with a composition of plagioclase, alkali feldspar,
hornblende, and pyroxene which is poor in quartz. Based on the geochemical data of the major element
of lava Mount Pangradinan, it has a SiO2 69.83% and K2O 4.25% included as the type of acid rock, with
magma type belong to a high calc-alkali series which characterized in this research area including into the
island-arc. Lava Mount Pangradinan has passes the final staging process (Last Stage) with magma
formation temperature is in the range of 1050 oC, and the vertical benioff zone comes from a depth of ±
173 Km. Further research is needed to obtain more detailed data to determine the evolution of magma
around the study area.
Keywords: Petrogenesis, superimposed volcanisms, major element, quartz latite, high calc-alkali
