VETERINARY MEDICINE WEEK

The College of Veterinary Medicine celebrated its Annual Vet Med Week last February 15-17,
2017 with the theme “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges” participated by the vet med and STEM
students, and the faculty members as well. The celebration’s objective is to elevate the knowledge and
skills of everyone in the field of veterinary sciences.

The celebration started on February 15, 2017 (Wednesday) with the registration of animals of all
sorts. Afterwards, the pet blessing was headed by Rev. ________. An opening remarks by Dr. Ma.
Asuncion Beltran formally started the program. The guest speaker for the event was Dr. Fina Balaoing-
Thornton. She encouraged everyone to continue on what they have started and be able to bear the
hardships of life. Her speech was followed by the day’s highlight which was the pet parade that
showcased the different breeds of canines, felines, and exotic animals of the students. Pet show is one
of the main events of the celebration, and so all pets were shown, and were also judged for particular
awards. The pet show also featured the talents of the dearest pets, and their jolliness towards mankind.
A Free Vaccination Drive on Anti-Rabies was also conducted by the Clinicians’ Club handled by Dr. Regina
Villarama. Later that time, an afternoon seminar at the Continuing Education Center was conducted. Dr.
Ronald Dizon was the invited speaker for the said seminar entitled “Animal Welfare Provision on
Production Sides” in which he shared to the listeners the good welfare provision being exhibited to
production sites. This includes proper way of stunning and slaughtering of farm animals. Another
seminar by Dr. Julieta Ramos-Ancheta was also conducted which speaks about Swine Production. The 2-
hour talk was filled with different notions about commercial swine farming.

The second day of the veterinary medicine week celebration was filled with multiple activities
administered by the different organizations on the institute. The Skills Olympics conducted by the VKV-
VLV sums up the morning. The Olympics was expected to test the abilities of the future veterinarians.
After that, An Intercollegiate Brawl of the Brains was handled by the Rodeo Club. The said quiz show
wasn’t exclusive to vet med students and several students coming from the different institutes of the
college also partook on the brawl of the brains. Later that moment, Round-Up competition spearheaded
by the Rodeo Club also happened in the CVM grounds. This contest is inclusive to DVM students who are
on their proper medicine years.

A seminar by the Dr. Jennifer Lucero started the last day of the celebration (February 17, 2016).
It was held at the CEC hall on which the students were provided cognizance regarding laboratory
animals being used in translational medicine. It was then followed by another seminar by Dr. Mark
Tabilisma of Bellman Company. The speaker shared his expertise and his knowledge on handling swine
farms.

The most awaited part of the celebration, which was the Binibining Barako and Mr. Kilabot,
aroused everyone. This event is for fun, on which the males have to act and dress as females, while the
feminine ones turned into gentlemen. This was one of the most enjoyed events that brought up the
laughs and perky acts of the students of vet med. The winners were Mr. Rony Ignacio and Ms. Rosette
Laranang from DVM 3 and DVM 4 respectively. This event was administered by the student council, with
the help of the faculty members and also the CVM students.

By God’s grace, all things worked successfully, with the helping hands of everyone and
collaborations of the different organizations. This annual celebration truly inspired everybody to
continue what they have started. It was a tiring but fun activity of the student council as well as the
students, and everyone did enjoy and seize the days.
