OBJECTIVE:
 Get a holistic understanding of the complexities involved in the process of attributing
intellectual property rights to people.
 Learn the legalities of intellectual property to avoid plagiarism and other IPR relates
crimes like copyright infringements, etc.

Unit-I
Importance of Intellectual Property: TRIPs-its Scope and Options, Different forms of IPR-IPR
Tool Kit, Characteristics of each form of IPR, Treaties in the field of industrial property, Patent
Cooperation treaty (PCT), Treaties in the field of copyright and neighboring rights, Treaties
establishing, International classifications, Paris convention. 12 Hours

Unit-II
Patents: Criteria of patentability, Patenting process, Laboratory notebook, Prior art search,
Types of search, Searching methods, USPTO and other internet sites for searching, Excavating,
mining, patent mine Mapping case studies, Patent drafting provisional/complete/amendment,
Exercise on patent drafting, IPR of living species, traditional knowledge and prior art, IPR of
biotechnology, IPR-Pharma case study, Enforcing IPR-patents, Infringement case- Case studies.

Strategic Management of IP: IP valuation, IP Business-wealth Generation, IPR policy, IP
trolls, MOUs, future challenges. 06 Hours
OUTCOME:
Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to :
a. identify different types of Intellectual Properties (IPs), the right of ownership, scope of
protection as well as the ways to create and to extract value from IP
b. recognize the crucial role of IP in organizations of different industrial sectors for the
purposes of product and technology development
c. identify activities and constitute IP infringements and the remedies available to the IP
owner and describe the precautious steps to be taken to prevent infringement of
proprietary rights in products and technology development

d. Be familiar with the processes of Intellectual Property Management (IPM) and various
approaches for IPM and conducting IP and IPM auditing and explain how IP can be
managed as a strategic resource and suggest IPM strategy.
