Richard S. Bacon, president of Bacon Group, Inc., has been elevated to the American
Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows for his animal shelter design work.
Rick is one of 138 AIA members across the country and one of only two in Florida to
be elevated to Fellow this year. The new Fellows will be recognized in an investiture
ceremony on June 27 at the 2014 National AIA Convention in Chicago.

“There are very few building types in our communities that have seen such a rise in
status as animal shelters, and Rick Bacon played a key role in making this happen,”
stated Martha T. Seng, FAIA, Principal at Jackson & Ryan Architects and animal
shelter design colleague located in Houston, in her sponsor letter to the College of
Fellows jury on behalf of Rick’s nomination. The election to fellowship recognizes
the achievements of architects as individuals and their significant contribution to
architecture and society on a national level.

Rick founded Bacon Group, Inc. in 1991 and is a member of the AIA Tampa Bay
Chapter. He started designing animal shelters in 1993 with the Pinellas County
Animal Services Shelter and Adoption Center located in Largo, FL. Since then he
has designed or consulted on over 130 animal care facilities in 26 states. Rick
presents design workshops for numerous animal care organizations, such as The
Humane Society of the United States, and writes articles on animal care facility
design for several national publications. His shelter design work has been recognized
by industry organizations including Engineering News-Record Southeast and the
AIA Atlanta Chapter.
