TESTING A TRANSISTOR USING AN OHMMETER

OBJECTIVE :

Upon the completion of this activity, the student must be able to test the characteristics of a
good transistor using an ohmmeter.

BACKGROUND INFORMATIONS :

A Bipolar Junction Transistor is constructed with three doped semiconductor regions

separated by two pn junctions. The three regions are called emitter, base, and collector. One type consists
of two n regions separated by a p region ( npn), and the other type consists of two p regions separated by
an n region (pnp).

The pn junction joining the base region and the emitter region is called the base-emitter
junction while the pn junction joining the base and the collector region is called the base-collector
junction.

LABORATORY PROCEDURES :
1. Consider the transistor is in good condition with its terminals properly identified.
2. Measure the resistance across the terminals of the transistor as indicated in Table1. If the meter
deflects, write LOW RESISTANCE (LR). If the meter has no deflection, write HIGH RESISTANCE
(HR). Record all measured values I Table 1. ( Note : Observe correct probe polarity especially if you are
using a Japanese-made meter where the positive polarity is on the black probe and the negative polarity is
on the red probe ).

Under this low-resistance reading, what is the common terminal ? _______

2.2. What biasing is applied on the terminals that indicate a low-resistance reading ? _______________
On the terminals that indicate a high-resistance reading ? _______________

2.3. What have you observed from the resistance read on the collector and emitter terminals on either bias
