ENGINE PERFORMANCE JOB SHEET 10

Using an Exhaust Gas Analyzer

Name BOSCH Station winter Date 09.06.2018

NATEF Correlation
This Job Sheet addresses the following NATEF task:

A.13. Prepare 4 or 5 gas analyzer; inspect and prepare vehicle for test, and obtain exhaust readings;
interpret readings, and determine necessary action.

Objective
Upon completion of this job sheet, you will be able to prepare a 4 or 5 gas analyzer, inspect and prepare a
vehicle for test, obtain exhaust readings, as well as interpret the readings.

Tools and Materials

An exhaust gas analyzer

Protective Clothing
Goggles or safety glasses with side shields

Describe the vehicle being worked on:

Year ___________ Make __________________________ Model __________________________

VIN __________________________ Engine type and size

Describe general operating condition:

Type of gas analyzer used: AMM

Check the gases that the tool will measure: HC yes CO yes CO2 yes O2 yes NOx yes

In what units of measurement is each of these gases measured?

HC ppm vol CO %vol CO2 %vol

O2 %vol NOx ppm vol

Check with your instructor for this information—The maximum acceptable readings for this year and
model vehicle are:

HC 600 CO 4.5 CO2 10% min

O2 22 NOx 170
PROCEDURE

1. Turn on the exhaust gas analyzer and allow it to warm up.

2. Insert the tester’s exhaust probe into the exhaust pipe of the vehicle.

3. Install the shop’s exhaust ventilation tubing into the vehicle’s exhaust pipe.

4. Make sure the meters on the exhaust gas analyzer are properly calibrated and adjusted.

5. Block the wheels of the vehicle and set the parking brake.

6. Position the analyzer so that it is easily read from the driver’s seat of the vehicle.
NOTE: It takes a few seconds for the analyzer to measure the exhaust gases, so watch the
analyzer after the event not during it!
7. Start the engine.

8. Record the exhaust readings from starting.

HC 12 CO 0.059 CO 2 2.19

O217.74 NOx 12

9. After start-up, the exhaust readings will settle at some point for a very short
period of time. Record those readings.

HC 16-247 CO 0.799-3,511 CO2 1.02-7.30

O2 19.36-16.51 NOx 1-4

10. Once the engine has been warmed to normal operating conditions, the exhaust
readings will stabilize. What are the readings with the engine warmed up?

HC 176-147 CO 0.510-0.441 CO2 14.11-14,20

O2 0.92-0.93 NOx 151-230

11. Turn off the engine and put away the exhaust gas analyzer.
Describe what you observed and explain to the best of your knowledge why
the readings changed.
