What is your personal definition of virginity? Most of us might guess it means the first time

being virginal.

There's no way to tell if someone has had sex before

Some people contact me because they are considering getting a virginity test done on their bride-
to-be, or their child. Or have been told this is going to happen to them.
Virginity tests are done to check if someone’s had sex. And sometimes to draw the conclusio that
if you’ve not had sex, you won’t have a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
These tests are meaningless because you can’t tell if someone is a virgin by physical test or
medical exam. And ‘being a virgin’ does not protect against STIs.
Aside from them being clinically irrelevant, let’s consider the ethics of subjecting children or
women to intrusive exams. Where they may never have had their genitals touched before.
Or how threatening such tests may be for those who are trans or intersex, where this discovery
could place them at risk of shaming, punishment or abuse.

opposed to legitimate forms of forensic testing and aftercare for rape survivors).
Or where the person being tested knows full well the consequences of being diagnosed, as not
being a virgin will have catastrophic or even fatal results for them.
If this is something you are facing, noting these tests are a nonsensemay give you more
confidence to talk to others about why they are not needed, or to cope if you still have to be
tested.
A number of charities are listed below that you might turn to if you are in this situation.
Hymen Hysteria
Virginity checks are usually focused on hymen testing, although some practitioners also wrongly
believe if they feel around in a vagina they can tell by touch if someone’s had sex before.
Remember: they can’t.
Linked to hymen checking, is hymen repair that some women are encouraged to have so they
seem more like a virgin (regardless of whether they’ve had any kind of sex before).

Reparative genital surgery following injury, disease, birth trauma, sexual assault or as part of
gender reassignment are all valid forms of care.
Hymen repair to make women seem more like virgins is not an ethical or effective
‘treatment’. Explained most eloquently by this woman who wrote to me:
“I did hymen surgery to regain virginity. I did it because according to my husband a virgin has
to bleed. I had never had sex but I had the surgery because I didn’t want to be guilty. But then
unfortunately even after doing surgery I didn’t bleed and I was considered as non-virgin, which
is really upsetting me”
Hymens are massively misunderstood. You might have been taught in sex education or through
peers it's a membrane that covers the vagina, ‘broken’ by sport, horse riding, using a tampon or
through fingers or a penis pushing through to gain access.
You might be a medic or a sex educator who tells people this.
It’s wrong. And I could waste words telling you why, or you could watch this much better and
far funnier film
The hymen isn’t a barrier or vaginal covering that needs breaking (especially if you’ve been told
the best way to do this is through rough fingering or aggressive thrusting with a penis).
Instead, think about it as a pliable opening. Or as Sweden’s Association for Sexuality Education
recently described it - the ‘Vaginal Corona’.
The consequences of being obsessed with virginity
If you’ve been told that vaginas are sealed tight until intercourse, you may also buy into the idea
that sex should always hurt the first time.
This can lead to unsatisfactory sex that is vaginally painful and leads to problems for those doing
the penetrating – particularly with getting/keeping an erection or coming too quickly.
It also sets up unhelpful gender divisions. ‘Sex always hurts the first time’ or ‘virginity is proven
by bleeding after sex’ are never applied to young men, who are expected to look forward to
having sex as a pleasurable and problem- free encounter.
This ignores how many young men do experience first time sex as weird, stressful and
sometimes uncomfortable.

And it normalises having sex as something unpleasant for women: they will either have to learn
to like it (assuming that’s tolerated by her culture/community/partner), or otherwise just
endure it.
If you are residing in a culture or community where being checked to see if you are a virgin is
considered okay, then telling you that, yes, you can enjoy yourself may be unhelpful or
dangerous.
The result for many women and their partners where virginity is seen as ‘not having penis in
vagina sex’ is they do lots of things that are categorized as ‘not real sex’.
If that applies to you, you might well enjoy giving/getting oral sex or exploring anal sex as an
alternative. Or you might feel pressured to provide oral or anal sex that you don’t like but keeps
a partner happy, while maintaining your ‘fresh’ vagina for some future purpose.
This can be a problem as it still exposes you to STIs that don’t discriminate between bums,
mouths and vaginas.
If you consider you ‘aren’t a virgin’ if a penis didn’t go ‘all the way in’ or he didn’t really 'come'
(ejaculate) inside you, you could still get pregnant. Or you may become overly
and unrealistically anxious that, while you haven’t had sex, you could still be pregnant.

If you’re in a situation where not being a virgin or having sex is a big deal, do you feel safe to
get help if you think you have an STI or everyday problems like thrush or cystitis? Or if you’re
unsure if you are a virgin but think you could be pregnant?

not tell anyone you have asked for help and you can find your nearest service in the link above.

What now?
While I have been very critical about how we understand virginity, that does not mean it isn’t
significant for many people.
You may now feel clearer about whether you are a virgin, or whether this is such a big issue for
you.
You may still wish to save your ‘first time’ for marriage and/or a special person. If that is
important to you, as it is to a lot of people, nothing in the above information detracts from this.
What does change is the knowledge you now have:
 Nobody can tell if you have had sex or not
 Virginity is an idea, not a physical condition
 Virginity checks and hymen repairs are dubious
 Sex should not hurt (unless you want it to).
Remember: if someone judges or shames you for being a virgin, or not being a virgin, they are
wrong. Not you.

Virginity testing is a hugely sensitive subject since it is not only related to sexual behavior of a
person but is intrinsically associated with far more complex questions of gender, sexual politics,
history, religion and culture. While folklore has several, and many of them bizarre, theories
about how a girl should behave if she is still a virgin, modern proofs of virginity for girls centers
around an intact hymen and gynecological examination. Nevertheless there's no way to know for
sure if a girl is a virgin.
Historical perspective of Virginity testing
A person – whether a girl of boy – is said to be a virgin when he or she has not had sexual
intercourse. Because of the patriarchal basis of most societies, the concept of virginity in girls
came to be laden with notions of purity, honor and worth. According to patriarchal constructs of
female identity, a woman is a man’s - her father’s or husband’s - possession who has the right to
decide whom she can have sex with. Thus, the huge importance of virginity for women was one
of the ways of gaining control of the sexual behavior of women. In traditional societies around
the world like in Asia, Africa and Middle East, girls are still expected to remain virgins until
marriage which is most often arranged by the elders of a family according to prevailing caste,
religious and community principles. Even though women’s empowerment in the industrialized
societies has reduced the importance of virginity among women, some pockets of these societies
have witnesses a new wave of sexual abstinence among teenagers as evidenced by the popularity
of chastity rings and purity bands.

What exactly is a virginity test?

Today, virginity tests for girls depend on the presence of an intact hymen in her body. The
hymen is a thin membrane that covers the opening of a girl’s vagina and usually tears upon the
first sexual intercourse. Thus if a girl bleeds after an intercourse it is assumed that she was a
virgin and likewise the absence of bleeding is construed as a sign that she has prior sexual
experience. Virginity tests based on gynecological examination of a woman’s body also depends
on the presence of an intact hymen for determining whether or not a girl has had prior sexual
intercourse.

The problem with virginity tests centering on an intact hymen is that the membrane may break
due to other causes too. Masturbation, intensive exercise or physical activities like horse-riding
can cause the hymen to rupture. Thus a girl who has a broken hymen may be labeled sexually
experienced when in fact she may never have had been touched by a man before.

Yet another problem associated with this kind of virginity test lies at the very heart of the
concept of sex. What exactly constitutes sexual intercourse? Is a girl who has not had a vaginal
intercourse but engaged in other forms of sexual behavior like oral intercourse or heavy sexual
fondling still a virgin? There is great debate among educationists, the medical, legal and religious
community on what exactly determines a sexual act since it varies from one culture and
historical period to another
Since most virginity tests require a virgin to have an intact hymen, the reverse of the same logic
can be used to declare sexually experienced women virgins by taking advantage of hymen
reconstruction surgery. Known as hymenorrhaphy or hymenoplasty, this is a kind of cosmetic
procedure which surgically restores the hymen in a woman’s body. The new hymen can be a
membrane without blood supply like a gelatin capsule or a vaginal flap with blood supply and
hence capable of bleeding after the next episode of vaginal sexual intercourse. This kind of
surgery makes it even more difficult to determine virginity on the basis of an intact hymen.
Other kinds of virginity tests

Traditional methods of determining female virginity often depended on proof of unusual powers
of a sexually pure woman. In the past, virgins were credited with performing miraculous tasks
like taming wild animals, calming stinging swarms or holding water in a sieve. In Pliny the
Elder’s History of the World there are recipes for preparing diuretic potions which were
administered to girls as part of virginity tests. If the drinker could hold her urine after consuming
or inhaling such preparations, she was declared a virgin. However over time the evidence of a
bleeding hymen came to be considered the most acceptable form of virginity test and became
quite common as part of marriage rites in almost all parts of the world.

Today in most advanced societies virginity tests are considered demeaning to a woman’s honor
and thus a violation of human rights. The Amnesty International in fact lists virginity testing as a
kind of violation against women since it equates a woman’s worth with an aspect of her body
and because of the historical use of the notion of virginity as form of sexual control. However in
many cultures the practice continues covertly or overtly as a way of increasing the worth of a girl
before marriage. In several African countries the specter of AIDS has compelled community
leaders to use virginity testing, rightly or wrongly, as a way of preventing teens from engaging in
sexual behavior.

Recent trends of sexual abstinence vows among teenagers in developed societies recall the
traditional construct of female virginity. While this contemporary concept ostensibly applies the
idea of virginity to both sexes and thus escapes from the patriarchal notion of sexual control, it is
still not without its problems. Adolescence health experts point out that when teenagers are
taught that abstinence is the only way to sexual well-being, they are being denied useful
knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases and planned pregnancy. Furthermore the notion of
chastity varies from one movement to another. More conservative ones like the Silver Ring
Thing forbid any kind of sexual contact between girls and boys but many teenagers secretly
believe that vaginal intercourse is the only thing they are not allowed to engage in. Also such
movements are very often couched in religious terms and this raises questions about their
validity in an avowedly secular society.
The bottom-line seems to be that no single kind of virginity test is foolproof. So instead of
looking for a partner who is technically a virgin, one might do better to accept a woman for who
she is and for all the ways she can bring joy in another person’s life.

more specific there are marks in a virgin Girl’s body to note include:

1. Forehead
A girl who is still pure has a smooth forehead. After intercourse the slippery smooth face is always lost and some twitch (lines) will appear. The lines
don’t look like the ones brought by old age. The lines cannot be removed by any face lotion or oil. It is not easily visible but can be noticed when she
laughs or talks.
2. Nose

The tip of her nose is reddish in color if she is a virgin. If you touch the tip of the nose it appears red. Sometimes the color is not easily visible. After
intercourse the red color disappears.
3. Eye

When the bottom of the petals folded a bit and there is a sign of bruising ( bruise marks) means the girl is not a virgin anymore. A girl who is still virgin
has no black strip. Also when she laughs, a virgin girl has no wrinkles under her eye lids.

4. Fruit Chest (bre'ast)

Brea-sts of a virgin girl are always tense and hard. After being touched by a man, the breasts normally become less firm and become larger than before
The more she is touched and undergoes intercourse the more it enlarges and the more it drops.

Apart from knowing her virginity, you can also tell if a woman has given birth or not by looking at her brea-sts. If her nippl'es are straight or facing
upwards, she has never given birth. But if her nippl'es are facing downwards, she has given birth.

Try to hold the little finger about one minute then release and ask how it feels. If she says she felt nothing at all, there are high chances she is not a virg
