Narrative Report
Last June 13-15 (Wednesday-Friday), to 18-22 (Monday-Friday) 2017, the third level
student nurses with the supervision of Dean May M. Veridiano and Mrs. Wilfrida B. Narciso
had their clinical duty in Pedia I, II&III Ward, Adult Male & Female Ward, TBC Female
Wardand EMD Ward at San Lazaro Hospital - Sta. Cruz, Manilain partial fulfilment of the
course Nursing Care Management 103 (Related Learning Experience) Care of Client with
Problems in Oxygenation, Fluid and Electrolyte Balance, Metabolism and Endocrine. The
student nurses first attended the general orientation together with the different affiliated
schools in different provinces. The officer and staff in charge of the hospital discuss about the
organizational chart of the departments from the Medical Center Chief II, Dr.Winston S.
Go,down to the nurses. They give a glimpse of history from the foundation of the hospital
and pillars of its origin as it started to cater clients with a case of leprosy and mentally ill
patients. The nurse of the San Lazaro deeply emphasize the consequences of being bitten by
the rabid animals specially the indoor pets who haven’t undergone vaccine and to those
people being bitten to seek an immediate medical advice. Health care providers didn’t wanted
the client with the rabies manifest a hydrophobia (fear of water) and fear of light from which
their life ends for a few weeks or months that will pass. The hospital gives a complete support
to those critically ill patients who cannot sustain their basic needs such as medicines and
financial support. They also encourage people to have a frequent visits with the doctor if they
suspect a communicable disease in their body and confidentiality is a must to protect their
rights and dignity from their friends and families. As the student nurses go with the
background look of the hospital it has individual rooms and buildings with specific disease
admitted in order to prevent the transmission of pathogens from one patient to another and to
protect the immunocompromised patients from harboring such disease. From the day of duty
the student nurses prepared their personal protective equipment that includes smock gown,
mask (N95), and gloves before going to each respective wards and patients. We switch from
different areas to witness the different cases to give us a glimpse of what that disease are. To
determine also the signs and symptoms that occurs in the specific patient, however some
areas are restricted to prevent further exposure of harmful disease. Student nurseshave
Chickenpox, Dengue, HIV/AIDS, Rabies, Hepatitis, and other problems that weakens the
immune system of the body. The student nurses starts their duty at 1 o’clock to 5 in the
afternoon.
The student nurses builds rapport to patients, performs bedside care, monitoring of
vital signs, IV regulation, input and output monitoring, charting, giving of oral medications
San Lazaro hospital is one of the hospitals that cater communicable diseases. It is the first
hospital that the BSN III-A encounter in their manila affiliation.
The first day of the student nurses at San Lazaro Hospital was the orientation. Orientation
about the hospital’s history and about the different diseases they may encounter. Each and
every student is listening attentively to what the speaker is saying.
The student nurses are now ready and prepared to go on their first assigned place to have
their duty.
The student nurses are presenting each disease that is assigned to them to make them
familiarize all the communicable diseases they may encounter. And each of them are sharing
what have they leanduring the day and the disease they ‘ve handle in their duty hours.
The DOH gives chances to student to get magazines that they can use in their research as
references.
The students nurses are practicing about they’re grand presentation about the topic they have
chosen which Rabies is also known as hydrophobia.
Last June 21, 2018 (Thursday) the student nurses conduct a program for further
awareness of the clients regarding to the rabies. Rabies is one of the communicable disease
that could be lethal if not been treated early once the client is been bitten he/she must seek
immediate medical advice for check-ups and proper vaccine to be given even though the pets
is been vaccinated. Through our lecture with the clients we discuss the cause and effect of
what we called “rhabdovirus” that is present in the saliva of a rabid animal it penetrates
through our skin from their teeth or scratches. The student nurses discuss about the do’s and
don’ts after been bitten by the rabid animals it includes irrigating the wounds with clean
running water for 8-10 mins, then application of iodine or antiseptic solutions, and lastly
bringing the victim to the nearest center or clinics. Application of garlic is been prohibited as
it burns and destroy the tissues and also the use of what they called “batong buhay” After that
the dog or rabid animals must be monitored for at least 14 days for the signs of rabies. If
there’s a signs of rabies the infected animal must be bought to the nearest laboratory for
further studies of the vaccine. After the discussion the clients prepared some questions that’s
making them confuse and the student nurses answer it politely also with the help of their
clinical instructor. At the end of the program the student nurses give some prizes to those

how it can prevent and avoid. And what are dos and don’ts if they have bitten by any animals
that have rabies.
The student nurses provide tokens for their grand presentation that the patient can use either
at home or at the hospital. This will be given to the relatives and patients that are listening
carefully and can answer the questions that the students provided.
The BSN III-A particularly the Group 1 performed hand washing in front of the patients and
relatives to make them aware on the possible diseases that they may encounter and give them
primary defence when it comes to prevention of diseases.
