The June acreage estimates in this report are based primarily on surveys conducted the first two weeks of June.
These surveys are based on a probability area frame survey with a sample of approximately 1,160 segments or
parcels of land (average approximately 1 square mile) in the Southern Plains Region and a list probability sample
of over 6,300 farm operators. Enumerators contact farmers and ranchers in the segments in person, while a mix
of mail, telephone, and internet is used to collect data from the list survey sample.

Data provided by Oklahoma and Texas operators are the foundation of the estimates made for the Southern
Plains Region. The Southern Plains Regional Field Office would like to thank all farmers and ranchers that
responded to these surveys and provided data used to set these important estimates.

OTHER CROPS

Oklahoma Other Crops: Oklahoma rye acreage decreased 4 percent from last year, to 250 thousand acres.
Soybean acreage, at 660 thousand acres, is up 1 percent from last year. Canola acreage is forecast at
70.0 thousand, down 56 percent from 2017. Planted acreage for peanuts is forecast at 16.0 thousand, down
24 percent from the previous year. Oats, at 50.0 thousand acres, are up 11 percent from last year.

Texas Other Crops: Texas rice acreage increased 17 percent from last year, to 203 thousand acres. Soybean
acreage, at 160 thousand acres, is down 24 percent from last year. Sunflowers, at 43.0 thousand acres, are
down 7 percent from last year. Planted acreage for peanuts is forecast at 170 thousand acres, down 38 percent
from 2017. Dry beans, at 30.0 thousand acres, are up 36 percent. Oats at 470 thousand acres, are up 3 percent
from last year.

U.S. HIGHLIGHTS

U.S. Highlights: United States upland cotton acreage is estimated at 13.3 million acres, up 7 percent from last
year. Corn acreage, at 89.1 million acres, is down 1 percent from 2017. Sorghum acreage is up 7 percent at
6.04 million acres. Winter wheat planted acreage is estimated at 32.7 million acres, up slightly from 2017, and
U.S. producers expect to harvest 24.8 million acres, down 2 percent from last year.

Nationally, producers expect to plant 89.6 million acres of soybeans, down 1 percent from 2017. Planted
acreage for peanuts is forecast at 1.50 million, down 20 percent from the previous year. Oats, at 2.89 million
acres, are up 12 percent from last year. Canola acreage is forecast at 2.05 million, down 1 percent from 2017.
Rice acreage increased 15 percent from last year to 2.84 million acres. Sunflowers, at 1.46 million acres, are
up 4 percent from last year.
