Once, there was a 5. cluster of five villages that dotted the countryside.
Travelling from one to the other was possible but difficult. In the
summer, the 6. rutted narrow road connecting the villages threw up balls of
dust. In the autumn, the rains turned the roads into a swamp which 7.
swallowed wagon wheels. In winter, snow covered all the signs of the
familiar journey.
But wearisome travel did not stop the villagers from meeting. 8._____
market days, they gathered in the largest village to sell their grain and sat
9._____ glasses of hot tea in the dilapidated village inn. The men talked
mostly 10._____ Marcus Boscovitz, 11._____ richest man who owned
much of what 12._____ was in all five villages. The sign at the entrance
13._____ his village was forged in gold letters.
The villagers, on the other hand, led a 14.grinedinglee difficult life. They
even had to worry about getting their share of the payment from Marcus.
From his right trouser pocket, he would keep a bag full of gold coins,
15.although he would always find faults 16.onto the villagers and refuse to
pay them for their services 17.randird.
One day, Marcus 18._____ the wedding of his daughter. As was the
19._____, he invited all the villagers to the wedding, 20._____ them a
well-known tailor, Oblomov. Prior 21._____ the wedding, Oblomov was in
and out of the great house for endless measurements and fittings. Come a
market day, Oblomov would tell cowards of villagers how even all the
servants in the 22._____ house had to dress in splendour for the occasion,
whereupon the villagers would greet him with, “Oh, you must be 23._____
a pretty sum out of this!” Not once did the tailor reply to their bitter jokes.
Oblomov always talked quietly. Maybe it was the 24._____ solitary hours
that he had spent bent over his sewing that explained his quiet and
thoughtful 25._____. He knew that Marcus would jingle those coins in his
right pocket for months before he would pay him half of what he owed.

On the day of the wedding, a snow storm raged through the villages. Even
so, the villagers made it to Marcus’ house. Hardy people as they were, the
thought of filling their often-empty stomachs gave them the strength to
trudge through the storm. Important guests braved impassable roads and
ignored the danger of being stranded. Except the musicians, not one guest
was late.
When the musicians finally arrived, it was very late into the night. They
were hungry and almost too tired to perform. Still, performed they did, for
they saw Marcus’ face swelled with anger. Before long, however, one of the
performers--a thin young boy who barely managed to carry a pair of
cymbals--fell asleep on his chair. Marcus stood up to grab him by his ear
and flung him off the chair. “ How dare you! You will receive no food or
money!” he shouted. Then, as if needing to add merriment to the night, he
picked up the cymbals, spread his arms wide and stamped his feet as he
banged the metal together proclaiming to his guests, “Be happy, be happy!”
Suddenly, as he raised his arms high to give the cymbals one final crash,
the thread to Marcus’ right trouser pocket came loose, tearing open the
pocket. The bag of gold coins fell on the floor. They spilled and spun and
finally lay in a pile as shiny and as high as the mounds of cookies on the
tables. Stood with their mouths agape, no one moved. It was the tailor
who stepped forward in the moment of silence. In a voice just loud enough
so all the guests could hear, he said, “How clever of you to pay us this
way! We certainly will be happy now!”
Before Marcus could utter a word or sweep up his coins, Oblomov
gestured all the villagers to follow after him in picking up the coins for the
amount they had been owed. All Marcus could do was make a choking
sound. Seizing this opportunity, Oblomov quickly took his leave, but not
before he offered to fix the pocket on another day.
