Experiment #: 02
Experiment Title: Experiment on load protection using over-current relay units.

Objectives:
1. To provide an idea of simple load over-current protection.
2. To demonstrate the construction and working principle of different protective components based
on its working principle.

List of Equipment:
1. Air break circuit breaker (Single phase)
2. Induction motor (as electrical load to be protected)
3. Variable mechanical load to the induction motor (Electrodynamometer).
4. Variable DC power supply
5. 220 V AC power supply
6. Ammeter
7. Connecting wire etc.

Circuit Diagram:

In this experiments, the electrodynamometer works as a variable mechanical load to the motor
system. This load can be varied from zero to certain value by changing its input DC voltage from
zero to ratings.

Working Procedure:
Step 1: Connect the circuit according to figure 1. Keep the variable DC source voltage at 0 volt.
Here, the motor runs at no-load condition. The motor draws a small amount of current from
the main lines.
Step 2: Increase the input DC voltage slowly by turning out the circular knob. Observe the motor load
current from ammeter. At a point, the Circuit Breaker trip down and isolate the load from the main
line. Take the current reading from the ammeter for which the circuit breaker trip down.
Step 3: Verify the reading with the specification of Circuit Breaker provided by its manufacturer.
