15TH SUNDARY IN ORDINATY TIME
Dear Parishioners,
Our first reading today tells us of
Amos. He was a shepherd and also looked
after sycamores – a farmer really! He was
sent by God from a small village in the hill
country of Judah to preach in the wealthier
Northern Kingdom. This was around the
middle of the eight century B.C. when the
kingdom was at a summit of prosperity.
(The so-called Celtic Tiger type of age!)
Soon the priest of the shrine of Bethel, the
Kings shrine, told Amos to go back to
where he came from … this is the royal
sanctuary, the national temple. “We do not
need you to be telling us about the poor who
are afflicted and exploited; we don’t need to
hear anything about injustice or corruption”.
Amos explains that god has called him to
“Go, prophesy (preach), to my people
Israel”. In spite of opposition, Amos insists
on his message of love and justice for all.
Likewise St Paul speaks to the
Ephesians, and to us, about the great
spiritual gifts God has given to us in Jesus.
Note then in the Gospel, Jesus is sending
out his apostles in pairs to do his work.
They go in pairs to support each other in
proclaiming the Good News; they are given
power over unclean spirits i.e. the power of
the devil; they are to carry only the WORD
OF GOD to others; they are not to be loaded
down with goods, just the power of Jesus.
They set out to proclaim the message on
foreign soils. Some will reject the word.
Jesus prepares them for this rejection –
they are to shake off the dust of that town
or village as a sign of non-acceptance and
move on to other people who may be more
receptive. This is a challenging strategy
given by Jesus.
Just like Amos and the pairs of
apostles, we too are sent out again and
again to tell of the Good News of Jesus as
found in the Gospels.
We congratulate Emiliana who will
make her final Profession in her hometown
in Portugal in the Verbum Dei Community.
We wish her success in her ministry.
Book Launch: Thanks to the 3
parishioners who came along to the Book
Launch: Your Freedom and Mine” last
Wednesday evening at SOAS, Russell
Square. The publication gives a detailed
history of the Turkish/ Kurdish conflict and
articles from the members of the Imrali
Delegation. I suggest that copies be shared
by those who wish to read all or part of the
book. It’s heavy going but informative.
Congratulations and Commiserations
to the English Team. They did us proud!
They gave their all (not forgetting other
countries too)!
During the week, I will be making my
way to Tipperary. It’s a full year since
been, so a lot of catching up to do!
