Philemon is most often compared to the younger Pliny’s letter
of intercession to Sabinianus (Epist. 9.21) on behalf of a freed-
man who had somehow offended his patron and sought

up, having the same powers as I should have myself, if present,
to... , imprison him, chastise him, and to make an accusation
before the proper authorities against those who harbored him,
and demand satisfaction.

(UPZ 121.14) probably represents the slave-catcher to whom Hermon
and Bion had fled. Moule (Colossians and Philemon, p. 36) translates:
’(anybody [bringing the slave back] by indicating that he is) with a sub-
stantial person who is subject to the law [will receive] 3 talents)’.

Winter CPaul’s
Letter’, p. 7) believes that Paul is not send-
ing Onesimus back in any literal sense, but is simply ’referring
his case to the proper higher authority’. On this point Winter
follows Knox (Philemon, p. 6) who thought Paul was ’refer-
ring Onesimus’s case to his legal owner for decision’. The legal
significance of åva1t£Jl1tro is evident in extra-biblical usage. A
technical meaning may well be attached to the other occur-
rences of 6vaxl>xw in the NT: the word is used three times in
Luke’s account of Jesus’ trial (Lk. 23.7, 11, 15) and once in
connection with Paul’s appeal to Rome (Acts 25.21).
The fact that åvc(1t£Jl1tro is a technical term, however, need
not mean that Paul only referred Onesimus’s case to the
owner, and not Onesimus himself. The other NT passages
make it clear that actual people, not just ’cases’, were referred
from one ruling authority to another: Pilate sent Jesus to
Herod for proper sentencing (Lk. 23.7); Herod’s soldiers
mocked Jesus and sent him back to Pilate (Lk. 23.11, 15). In
Acts 25.21 Festus told King Herod Agrippa that he had been
holding Paul in custody until he could ’send him up’ to Caesar
(Ywg ov åva1t£Jl’Vro a’Ù1:àv 1tpàç Kaiaapa). Festus meant that
Paul would actually be conveyed to Rome for trial (cf. Acts
27.1). In Philemon 12, therefore, the words ov åV£1tEJl’VcÍ cost
should be translated literally: ’whom I am sending on to you’.
Several commentators (Vincent, Oesterley, Moule, Lohse)
have noted that åV£1tEJl’Va is an epistolary aorist, a special
nuance of the aorist tense writers would use to put themselves
at the same point in time as their readers.2 We should imagine
that the first thing Onesimus did after returning to his angry

Several scholars (Bruce, Moule, Lightfoot, Vincent, Roehrs,
Franzmann, Oesterley) have noted that Phlm 19 is an example of a
χϵιρó&gam a;ραϕoν, an autograph ’I.O.U’. &eacgr;&gam a;&OHacgr; &a cgr;πoτ&iacgr;σω is probably a stronger
form of the more common repayment formula &eacgr;&gam a;&OHacgr; &a cgr;πoδ&OHacgr;σω (Oesterley,
’Philemon’, p. 216).

and the delay in coming to the point of the letter, are noticeable’ (Vin-
cent, Epistles, p. 184); ’The name is withheld until Paul has favourably
disposed Philemon to his request’ (Vincent, Word Studies, 518). The
doubled παρα&kap a;αλ&OHacgr;. .παρα&kap a;αλ&OHacgr; (Phlm 9-10) may indicate a similar
hesitancy to impose such extreme advice upon Philemon.

Coleman-Norton’s appendix (’Roman Law of Slaves’, pp. 172-77).
