A LETTER FROM SOMO LEADERSHIP
In 2017, it was a whirlwind year for Special Olympics
Missouri as we started construction on a $16 million
world-class Training for Life Campus, carried out 282
competitions, trainings and camps, trained and selected a
group of 101 delegates for the 2018 USA Games, planned
for the future of our organization’s programming at the
TLC and so much more, all while making sure 86 percent
of every dollar goes to program services.
Our 34,110-sq.-ft. home that will sit at 305 Special
Olympics Dr., in Jefferson City will be a world-class
facility where athletes from all over the state will have
the opportunity to not only come and train in a variety
of sports, but also receive free health screenings
(eyes, teeth, feet and ears and more) through Healthy
Athletes®.
With Special Olympics Inc., leading the way as the
world’s largest health organization for people with
intellectual disabilities, this campus will allow Missouri to
be a leader in making healthcare easier and cheaper to
obtain than ever before for a population often forgotten
when it comes to receiving adequate healthcare.
Our staff has been hard at work planning what camps
to offer our athletes and exactly how to expand our
programming to reach 106,000+ people in the state
with an intellectual disability who don’t yet receive our
services.
As we approach the finish line on the Training for Life
Campus, we can’t thank you enough for your support.
Whether you donated, volunteered, coached, competed
or cheered us on in 2017, you made a world of difference
in the lives of so many individuals with intellectual
disabilities in the Show-Me State and you mean
everything to our program.
As we enter the starting blocks for the next phase
of our journey offering a variety of new and enhanced
programming, we will rely on you now more than ever,
not just for financial support, but for your opinions and
expertise as we try to change the conversation around
people with intellectual disabilities from what they can't

worldwide, while also planning for the next 50 years.
• Plan and host our very first sports camp and Healthy Athletes® screenings
at the Training for Life Campus.

• Achieved our Training for Life Campus Capital Campaign goal, broke ground • Train and outfit 101 delegates of Team Missouri to compete at the 2018

and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage,
experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Athlete Leadership
Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs)
provides an opportunity for athletes
who wish to expand their role in Special
Olympics Missouri beyond the field of
competition.
ALPs truly is a program for every
single one of our athletes and SOMO
is committed to making sure every
athlete feels welcome in this setting.
It’s important for potential athlete-
leaders to recognize that this program
will push you. It will be hard work and
the expectation is that you will attend
classes, be attentive and engaged, and
complete homework for every class.
You will get out of this class what you’re
willing to put in.
Young Athletes™
AREAS
PROGRAMS WE OFFER
On the field of competition, our
athletes learn how to achieve success,
joy and acceptance, while Athlete
Leadership Programs teach them how
to achieve those same goals and feel
just as empowered while off the field of
competition as respected leaders and
spokespeople in their communities.
Throughout Special Olympics,
athlete-leaders take on roles and
responsibilities from many different
ALPs initiatives. They can work as
employees of SOMO, speak on behalf of
SOMO, serve as coaches and volunteers,
officiate competitions, tell our athletes'
stories through technology, represent
other athletes and leaders as part of the
SOMO Input Council and much more.
In 2017, we had our first set of
athlete-leaders take their Capstone
course and graduate at State Summer
Games. In 2018, we look forward to
expanding our class offerings and
adapting the program to a camp setting
at the Training for Life Campus.

Young Athletes™ is a unique
sport-and-play program for children
with and without intellectual
disabilities. The focus is on fun
activities that are important to
mental and physical growth.
Children ages 3-7 enjoy games
and activities that develop motor
skills and hand-eye coordination.
Young Athletes is an early
introduction to sports and to the
world of Special Olympics.
It not only teaches them the
motor skills they’ll use later in life,
but it also teaches them how to
interact with other children their
age who might learn at a different
pace.
For many families, this is their
first introduction to Special
Olympics and the resources and
support we offer for children (and
adults) with intellectual disabilities.

Unified Sports®
Special Olympics Unified
Sports® is an inclusive program
that combines individuals
with intellectual disabilities
(athletes) and individuals without
intellectual disabilities (Unified
Partners) on sports teams for
training and competition.
Athletes and partners compete
alongside one another, each in a
meaningful and integral role on
the Unified Sports team.

In 2017, Shop 'n Save hosted its "RoundUp"
campaign and sold its annual T-shirts in stores
to raise funds and awareness. They participate
in two SOMO events adding to our success with
the Drive it Home Raffle and Gold Medal Gala.
This partnership continues to be a significant
piece of our fundraising efforts and we are
truly thankful for the more than $100,000 that
Shop 'n Save helped raise in 2017 to support
Special Olympics Missouri athletes.

For more than a decade,
the Knights of Columbus have
cultivated an official partnership
with Special Olympics to grow
the program in North America in
addition to pledging increased
volunteer support for local and state games.
The Missouri State Council Knights of
Columbus has supported SOMO for more than
three decades as an official statewide partner.
Annually, they provide funds, meals, volunteers
and Honor Guards, and host numerous events
each year to promote Special Olympics.
In 2017, Missouri hosted the 135th Knights
of Columbus Supreme Convention. SOMO
athletes served as greeters, hosted booths and
shared their stories with Knights of Columbus
from across the world. The Missouri Knights
of Columbus have raised more than $700,000
towards their $1.2 million commitment to the
Training for Life Campus.

Special Olympics has been the
charity of choice for the Missouri
Association of Student Councils and
its members for more than 25 years.
MASC has contributed to the mission
of Special Olympics in several ways that
have impacted the lives of individuals
with intellectual disabilities.
MASC schools provide thousands of hours of
volunteer service across the state and support the

In 2017, MASC schools raised $128,283. Since 2009, they
have raised $1,215,727 just through their participation
in the Polar Plunge. That doesn’t even count the
numerous other fundraisers the councils do each year to
support their local SOMO programs.
SOMO athletes attend the MASC Leadership
Workshop (week-long camp) each year to learn valuable
leadership skills and work alongside their peers. MASC
and its students promote social inclusion, acceptance
and respect of all individuals across the state.

Law Enforcement
Torch Run over the past 11 years has made all
the difference, especially to the Special Olympics
Missouri athletes in the St. Louis Metro Area.
The John Michael Letz Award recognizes an
individual whose unselfish efforts and contributions
are directly responsible for the success of the
Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics
Missouri. The recipient is an individual who
constantly works to do more, not for the recognition,
but rather in support of SOMO athletes.
Wheeler’s involvement with Special Olympics
Missouri includes fundraising with the Polar Plunge
and Tip-A-Cops, awarding medals at events and
organizing the local leg of the annual Torch Run.
She also served as the LETR agency coordinator for
Wentzville PD from 2006-2017, helping her agency
raise more than $216,000 during that time.

In a surprise ceremony Jan. 13 in Lake of the Ozarks, SOMO inducted longtime coach, Unified Partner and staff member, Gary Brimer, into the SOMO Hall of Fame.
To qualify for the Hall of Fame, you must have participated in Special Olympics for at least 15 years (at least 10 years with Missouri) and demonstrate behavior and

Gary Brimer
Gary Brimer
began his
journey with
Special Olympics
Missouri in 1976
and dedicated
41 years of his
life to providing
year-round sports
training and
competition to the thousands of
athletes in Missouri.
What began as a hobby in 1976 as
a volunteer coach, eventually grew
into a career in 1994 when he joined
the staff as the director of sports and
training until his retirement in 2016.
During his career, Gary was
instrumental in leading the charge to
Missouri Military Academy
In 1997, Missouri Military Academy
hosted the very first Special Olympics
Missouri Athlete Sports Camp for 37
athletes. The venue fit the needs of
camp perfectly. It provided dorms, a
cafeteria and numerous sports venues.
Since 1997, the lives of thousands of
athletes have been changed because
for many of these athletes, it was the
first time they were away from their
family for an extended period of time.

Family
The Clayton family is a perfect
example of the impact one family can
make for Special Olympics. They are
involved on multiple levels as athletes,
Unified Partners, coaches, volunteers
and fundraisers.
Jeremy Clayton coaches multiple
sports, this year leading his softball
team to a silver medal at State
Outdoor Games. Ty Clayton is a multi-
sport athlete, who is well-known for
training hard and earning gold medals.
Ty’s brother, Jim, is a Unified Partner
for basketball.
Dayna went on many of the trips
and provided medical support for the
entire area.

SOMO Sports Camp, whether it be
an athlete, Unified Partner, coach,

memorable SOMO experience.
While MMA has been the home of
the Sports Camp for more than 20
years, it has also hosted other events

reasons why Gary’s legacy to the
SOMO program over the decades has

2016 Hall of Fame inductee, Robb
Eichelberger, who nominated Gary for
this honor, “Gary Brimer is a perfect
candidate for the SOMO Hall of Fame
because he treated each athlete as
his own family member. Gary knows
all the athletes and he is loved by
them all. He has worked very hard

Derek Sandbothe
is making quite the
name for himself.
He’s active in
SOMO through the

and Rec program
and after joining
and participating
with the Athlete Leadership Programs
University, Derek decided it was time
for him to take on a much larger
role within SOMO. He has become
quite active in assisting HQ staff with
fundraising efforts. While competing
in a bocce fundraiser, he recruited an
employee from a local hotel to compete
with him in Special Olympics as a
Unified Partner.
Derek has attended many speaking
opportunities around the state and
even started teaching public speaking
courses to his fellow athletes.

Kathy Witmeyer
Coach
Kathy started her
career with SOMO in
2002 as a parent and
fan of her daughter,
Becca and her
teammates.
Soon after, Kathy
could no longer
just sit and watch
but wanted to be a part of Becca’s
excitement.
Since then, Kathy has become a
certified coach in bowling, basketball,
softball, track and field, bocce and
tennis. She puts her heart and soul into
her work with the athletes, making
them the most confident, talented and
enthusiastic athletes in their sport.
Kathy is also the biggest recruiter
for NextStep’s Special Olympics teams,
growing the bocce team from four
players to more than 60.
