The purpose of this study is to identify the effectiveness of STAD model (Student Teams

Achievement Division) to improve the learning of Bahasa Melayu subject concerning Collective Noun
lesson. A total of 45 pupils from 2 classes of Year 3 pupils were selected to involve in this study. This
study uses the quasi-experimental design pre-test and quasi experiment pre-test control group design
using random cluster sampling. The Experimental group (n=22) had been exposed to the STAD method
while the other class was selected as Control Group (n=23) taught using traditional (teacher-centered)
method. Achievement was measured using pre-test and post-test consisting of 25 items of multi-choice
questions with KR21 credibility values of 0.7. The lesson had been carried out for 12 periods of lessons
which consist of 30 minutes per lesson for both Experimental and Control group. The findings show that
the mean post test of the Experimental Group (min=74.72) was not significant (t=.740, p=.463>.05) as
compared to the Control Group (min=70.44). Therefore, the result of this study shows that there is no
significant difference in the score between the Experimental Group which is taught using the STAD
Model and the Control Group taught in traditional Method. In addition, the discussion of this findings
are well discussed based on the previous studies which were also using the same STAD Method and the
implication of the study to teachers and pupils are well highlighted. The conclusions of this study shows
that the STAD model cooperative learning does not shows any significant improvement as compared to
the traditional methods.
