Water Treatment Contracting

Purifying water

The science of water treatment is constantly

evolving to meet new legislation and
environmental concerns. We have a long
experience of water treatment and are able
to construct affordable and sustainable
plants ranging from a desalination unit in the
Seychelles to a dissolved air flotation plant in
Kuala Lumpur.
Implementing a water supply scheme
requires a breadth of expert skills;
encompassing the design of intake works,
pumping stations, pipeline infrastructure and
treatment facilities. When a scheme involves
multiple sites, including our projects in the
Dominican Republic, Malaysia and Nigeria, the
logistical and control issues are immense.
That is when our global experience and
infrastructure comes into its own. With
well-developed procurement, logistics
management, civil engineering capability and
project management skills, we can effectively
implement the most complex of schemes.

Wastewater Treatment Contracting

Treating waste

We’re proud that our portfolio of wastewater

treatment projects is amongst the most
comprehensive in the industry. We have
completed thousands of projects, from
refurbishments to tailor made effluent
treatment plants. For each new challenge,
we bring the benefits from quality-assured
design processes, project management and
equipment supply.
Whatever the challenge, our experts can
identify the most effective, but viable solution,
whether it’s a membrane bio-reactor treating
wastewater in the UK, or an industrial plant
treating brewery waste in Nigeria.
Our experience means we can meet the
increasing demand for plants that are capable
of treating effluents for industrial, agricultural
and drinking water supplies for capital cities. All
the processes are controlled and monitored and
benefit from state-of-the art technologies.

Membrane Technology and Desalination Contracting

Pioneering membrane
technology

We have over five decades experience in

designing, procuring, manufacturing and
constructing many types of membrane systems
using microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration
or reverse osmosis to treat seawater, brackish
water and municipal wastewater.
Biwater built its first major reverse osmosis
plant (having provided British Royal Navy Ships
for many years), back in 1971 which, at the time
represented 10% of the world’s reverse osmosis
capacity. Since these early plants, due to both the
fall in operational costs and Biwater’s increased
knowledge and expertise, membrane technology
has seen rapid progress and cost reduction. These
changes have seen many countries around the
world embrace this technology.

Water Re-use Contracting

Investing in the
Environment

Current environmental studies have shown that

rainfall has become increasingly scarce where it
is most needed, such that water resources are
now too valuable to use only once.
Desalination is often chosen to
increase water availability, however a more
environmentally sustainable and more
economical option is the treatment of municipal
wastewater. Treating this wastewater to a
higher standard than current drinking water
regulations has proven to be more than 40%
cheaper than seawater desalination. This has
been achieved by the improvements in the
treatment of secondary effluent with the advent
of large scale ultra and micro filtration systems
followed by low pressure reverse osmosis.
For new systems an even cheaper approach
is the treatment of wastewater with a
membrane bioreactor followed by low pressure
reverse osmosis.

Industrial Wastewater Treatment Contracting

Working with industry

Industrial and commercial organisations rely

on Biwater to provide innovative, cost-effective
and reliable solutions to their water and
environmental problems.
We are able to optimise water use and
re-use at industrial locations by using the
latest modelling techniques. We can develop
a complete package that includes process
design, new construction and management and
operation of completed installations.
One of our specialist areas is in anaerobic
technologies that can be appropriate where
small footprint plants are required on
congested sites, where sludge production
needs to be minimised or where there is an
opportunity to reclaim the methane produced
for heat or power production.

Financing Projects Contracting

Supporting developing
countries - the need for
finance

Access to plentiful clean drinking water and

sanitation not only improves health and
the quality of life but is also a fundamental
requirement for economic growth. However
most developing countries need external funding
to invest in their water and sanitation projects
hence the ability to engineer financial solutions
is vital. Biwater plays a pivotal role in arranging
affordable finance.
Biwater’s international presence and project
finance experience facilitates access to a wide
range of financiers including commercial
banks, donor agencies, export credit agencies,
development banks, bi-lateral and multi-lateral
institutions. Biwater’s financing initiatives are
internationally acclaimed with a number of
awards including; “Trade Finance Deal of the Year
in 2008 for its innovative funding structure”, and
a highly commended award at the 2010 Global
Water Intelligence Water Awards.

Financing Projects Contracting

Working with
governments

Biwater arranges funding for the design,

construction and operation of water and
wastewater facilities in developing countries.
Financiers however insist that investments
focus on sustainable economic benefit to the
community rather than construction alone.
Biwater works in partnership with governments
worldwide to meet this objective.
Biwater has extensive experience of
financing public-private partnerships and
other similar contracts, and a comprehensive
understanding of the economic, commercial,
regulatory and legal frameworks necessary
for such projects to succeed. This partnership
approach ensures a lasting economic and social
benefit to the country.

Network Management Services Consultancy

Managing networks

Biwater manages water supply and wastewater

networks using an Integrated Network
Management Strategy. This involves strategic
planning, detailed network analysis and
subsequent design development.
Central to this approach is the adoption of
our advanced non-revenue water management
services where we reduce leakage levels and
billing system related losses.
There are various specialist tools we apply
to achieve the best results. Network modelling
is a powerful tool for solving distribution
problems and optimising investment plans.
Hydraulic zoning systems also give us a greater
understanding of the networks and help to
efficiently manage pressures and reduce
physical losses.
These techniques allow us to optimise the
performance of existing assets and with efficient
billing systems, to maximise revenue and ensure
good levels of service in a sustainable and cost
effective way.

Asset and Data Management Consultancy

Investing in the future

The rising demands placed on ageing plants

and deteriorating assets is a considerable
concern for most utilities. The use of ageing
infrastructure causes losses, shortages,
non-compliance with levels of service and
consequently customer dissatisfaction that
result in reduced revenues.
Biwater has expertise in assessing asset
conditions, managing asset data inventories
and in creating corporate regulatory reports.
By working closely with clients, Biwater ensures
assets are utilised and accounted for efficiently
and effectively.
We are world leaders in asset performance
management with solutions that are cost
effective and over a sensible period, self-
financing.

Infrastructure Ownership, Investment and Operation Operations

Looking to the future

It is estimated that there has to be a dramatic

investment in water services to address the
world’s critical water and sanitation problems
worldwide.
Governments in both the developed and
developing world have recognised that public
sector funds are unlikely to be sufficient and are
having to turn to the business world for help.
The private sector can provide access to
loans and investment and is able to improve
the operational and managerial efficiency of
utilities and introduce procedures to protect
new investments.

Operating Concessions Operations

Investing
internationally

Biwater was the first organisation to purchase a

water company when British water companies
were privatised during the 1980’s. Since then,
we’ve grown to become one of the world’s most
effective managers and operators of water
supply and sewerage systems.
We are recognised as a significant equity
investor in the water and wastewater industry
and continue to seek investment opportunities.
Our portfolio has included successful
concession projects from the UK to Chile,
Indonesia, the Philippines, China, Panama,
Mexico, South Africa and the British Virgin
Islands.
The benefits of such private sector
participation in the global water industry are
becoming increasingly apparent as the number
of success stories rise.

Our knowledge and experience of the water

industry means we can help train operators and
management in technical, scientific and other
water related topics.
We’ve initiated a number of community
training schemes, ranging from showing
customers how to reduce their consumption
and bills, through to providing training facilities
for vocational courses such as plumbing and
subsistence farming in South Africa.
Biwater’s water companies in the UK and
Indonesia helped to organise humanitarian aid
following the 2004 tsunami disaster. We gifted
