The following are our proposed facets and description of each. They are listed by citation order
(Format/type, User group/audience, Date, Hybrid, Information purpose/topic,
Authority/origin of information, Original purpose of information, Relationship):

˜

Though the majority of our collection consists of digital images of the slides of Wheeler͛s hybrids, there
are other content forms included. This facet enables users to search based on the category of content
type. Content types include:

›Ê Image (that is, digital representation of slide)

›Ê Letters/personal correspondence
›Ê uewspaper clippings
›Ê Photographs (personal)
›Ê Medals
›Ê Publications

͞Image͟ will also function as a sub-facet, whereby users will be able to refine their search based on a
particular hybrid͛s Physical Attributes:

›Ê Color (stated in both AHS color coding system and in lay language)
›Ê Size
›Ê Current existence (is the flower available for purchase/cultivation)

The ͞Format/type͟ facet is a hierarchical tree (the content types are both laterally relational and, in the
case of ͞Image,͟ hierarchical).

Our collection is designed with different user groups in mind. Each user group may have a different set
of needs when visiting the collection, although it is possible that there are overlapping needs and
purposes for our user groups. We envision two possible groups of users:

›Ê Amateur garden enthusiasts (͞enthusiasts͟)

›Ê People with a general interest in gardening history (͞historians͟)
This facet allows users to drill down immediately to the range of content/facets that may be of
particular interest and/or use to them. This facet is flat and multi-valued since a user could potentially fit
into either group and/or an item might be of interest to both groups of users.

The collection consists of various items whose dates of origination range from the 1940s to 1960s. Items
of this facet may be structured in a hierarchical fashion according to year range. In addition, all of the
types across the collection are tied by this facet. This facet is important for users as this collection is a
historical one and deals with a specific date range. User scenario: A gardening enthusiast wants to see
the evolution of daylily hybrids in the time period of 1950 to 1956.

As part of the process of organizing this collection, it seems important that the hybrids themselves play
a central role. The hybrids seem to be one of the key things that tie the collection together. This facet
can apply to the clippings, photographs, slides, medals and publications, as all of these objects deal with
at least one specific hybrid. In essence, we would like for a user to be able to go into the collection
online and see all objects pertaining to any one hybrid. The structure of this facet will be multi-valued.

The collection consists of various item formats: slides, photographs, medals, journals, newspaper
clippings, magazine clippings, catalog, and correspondence. Additionally, each individual item can be
described by unique descriptors according to its inherent characteristics. Examples of ͞information
purpose/topic͟ metadata include hybrid-specific information, general daylily information, gardening
history, Wheeler͛s personal background. This facet is important for users as they may search for an item
based on the purpose it serves. A usage scenario: A local historian interested in Wheeler͛s personal life
may look for items that reveal such information. This facet is flat, rather than hierarchical, and multi-
valued.

The items in the Ralph W. Wheeler collection originated from different sources. Most of the items
originated from Wheeler himself: e.g. personal slides and photographs. Others are from the American
Hemerocallis Society: e.g. medals and yearbooks. Others are from individuals: e.g. personal letters. Still
others are from organizations: e.g. Amherst College Alumni Association biographical sketch. This facet is
flat, rather than hierarchical, and single-valued.

The items in the collection served different purposes originally. Some were kept as personal records:
e.g. slides and photographs. Others were publicity materials: e.g. medals, newspaper clippings. Some
served commercial purposes: e.g. gardening catalogs. Others served as general information: e.g. books
giving background information on daylilies and their history. This facet is flat, rather than hierarchical,
and single-valued.

This facet will function like the ͞related items͟ or ͞you might also like͟ ones that are so popular on
major shopping internet sites. The goal will be to make connections between other items in the
collection, and resources outside the collection, transparent to users. Some of these relationships will
occur naturally through other facets, but we wanted to create a separate facet to make as many
connections as possible, and to make those connections quite intelligible to our users. The structure of
this facet would be flat and multi-valued.
