I originally deducted marks for many people here. This time I will be nice. Mid-term I will be horrible again.
If it was really ugly – lose one mark
If it didn’t show a mostly circular shape – lose one mark

1. Define ‘magnetic flux’ – Note: you must clearly explain any symbols you write, you can’t just write the letter (2
marks)

The quantity of magnetic field (1) that passes through a cross-sectional area of wire (1); OR
Magnetic flux = magnetic field strength x cross-sectional area exposed to magnetic field x (perpendicular component
of field contributing to the flux) (2)

2. Clearly define and explain the four factors that affect the magnetic flux experienced by a coil inside an external
magnetic field – Note: assume the coil does not initially carry a current, you must explain the quantities, you
cannot only use the symbol. You must explain clearly (4 marks)

1. Magnetic field strength (1)

2. Direction of the (external) magnetic field surrounding the coil of wire (1)
3. Orientation of the coil inside the external magnetic field (1)
4. Cross-sectional area of the loop (1)

3. Define Lenz’s law in words - Note: you must clearly explain any quantities you use to explain your answer, you
can’t just write the letter (2 marks)

An induced current always flows in a direction that opposes the change that caused it (2); OR equation in words (2)

4. a) In an experiment, a loop of wire is dropped through an external magnetic field that comes out of the page.
Initially, the coil of wire is completely inside the magnetic field. It drops through it vertically, so that it experiences
less of the field, until it eventually falls completely out of the field. This is shown in the picture below. With
references to Lenz’s law and relevant quantities, explain clearly what happens in this situation and why - Note: you
must explain any symbols you write, you can’t just write the letter. NO DIAGRAMS (6 marks)

You get marks for every separate clear Physics point. Part of this requires me
to use my judgement. You need to be specific, not vague

YOU CANNOT GET A MARK HERE FOR JUST STATING ‘FARADAYS/LENZ’S

LAW’ BECAUSE OTHER QUESTIONS IN THE EXAM GIVE YOU A MARK FOR
DOING THAT!!!

Example of Physics points:

• The magnetic flux passing through the loop reduces as the coil falls
downwards and out of the field. (1)
• (Lenz’s Law tells us) the direction of current will act to produce field lines
that go out of the page within the loop and oppose the reduction in flux (1)
• The induced current is therefore counterclockwise (1)
• Using Fleming’s (specify first or second in right circumstance) right-hand
rule…. (1)
• We find that the magnetic force acts upwards (1)
• This opposes the motion of the coil downwards (1)
• ANY CLEAR, RELEVANT PHYSICS POINT (1)
• Clarity (1)

measures 130cm by 82cm (The desk’s surface is horizontal relative to the Earth’s surface at that point) (3 marks)

Ф = BACosϴ (1) = (5.9 x 10-5) x (130 x 10-2) x (82 x 10-2) x cos (18) (1)

Ф = 5.98 x 10-5 Wb (1)

b) Which component of the magnetic field strength did you use in your calculation and why? (2 marks)

The vertical component (1), because it is perpendicular to the desk (1); OR a good and relevant physics explanation
related to flux (2) Very clear demonstration that you understand the situation.
